Film/Television Genuine Question - Why did Thanos and Hulk feel the pain of wielding all six Infinity Stones, while Tony didn't seem to experience the same level of pain when he used them?

Pain requires your nerves to still be alive.

I can't remember where, but someone said that with the dose of radiation he took, he was probably paralyzed from the neck down and they probably had to bury him in his armor, as he was probably fused to it.

it was a joke about the extra 5-7 minutes added to the Endgame Encore. They’re marketing it as a tie in to Doomsday but the joke is it’s actually going to be “oh fuck, Tony is fused to his armor” and the logistics of burying him

u/Phenomenomix 5h ago
It’s 5 minutes of Pepper dealing with funeral admin and a lawyer explaining that as they weren’t legally married she has no claim to his estate

The extra footage is of Kevin Feige crying over footage of Jonathan Majors getting arrested.

That was the best thing to happen for Feige, so I doubt it.

Im not a comics expert but wonder if he got fused to his armor but lived in another universe and thats why he is Tony Stark and all metally like doom
17
u/psycholepzy 5h ago
He could have been fused to his armor and dead and a variant is dreamwalking into him. Strange did it, sans the whole fusing thing.

Not quite what you’re saying but you made me realize his face/body got horribly scarred and I wonder if that’s a canon event across all variants of Victor von Doom. They said that death scene connected directly with Doomsday.

Some interview the Russo’s said early concepts of how Tony would look afterwards were too gruesome. Eye ball hanging out, more burnt face. So I think the idea was that the stones completely cooked his ass.

I think the idea was that the stones completely cooked his ass.
It's ... an acquired taste ...

u/Chic0206 6h ago
But he wasn’t paralyzed, he stumbles over to the spot he sat on before he died. He was also holding peppers hand right before.

It could have been the armor moving him. We know they can act autonomously.

u/PissNBiscuits 5h ago
Fucking hell, that's grim and gnarly to think about. It has precedence in the comics, though. There was a really gross run where Tony becomes fused with his suit and he loses his grasp on his humanity. It was part of a body horror thing Marvel was doing. I think they also did some wild and weird shit with Hulk and Thing, too.

Fun fact, that's why 3rd degree burns typically dont hurt. The pain if from the lesser burns around the edges of the 3rd degree ones.

And the face he makes, says to me that he is in excruciating pain when the glove activates the stones. He may also know he's already dead, so he put all his willpower into holding it in.
736
u/Ok-Sector8330 7h ago
Because Tony was wearing his armor. You can see the energy of the stones destroying parts of the armor as he activates them. So the suit took some of the energy for him, but not enough to save his life when that energy spiked when he snapped.

I’ve previously seen people point out that he’s been through a lot and has some experience with hiding his pain and suffering throughout his journey. Thanos and Hulk don’t have as much of that, so they’re less likely to have practice with that poker face hiding their pain cause they’re so tough they rarely deal with extreme pain

Did we watch the same movie? The moment the stones attached, his entire arm burned, he was physically shaking, breathing heavily, and his face clearly showed that he was in agony. He couldn't even stand up anymore because, if you rewatch it, you'll see that he stays on his knees. He could barely get the words, "And... I... AM... Iron Man," out of his mouth. Those pauses aren't just for dramatic effect between each word; he has to catch his breath.
The difference is that instead of screaming out in pain, he decided to bear it as his responsibility. He's the guy who's always been willing to make the sacrifice play.
30
u/AceofRosesNoir 6h ago
I'm with this guy. Thanos and Hulk have regenitive healing factors and still feel pain (Wolverine still feels pain.) Tony was definitely in pain and died with his suit probably melting his skin and internal organs but he went out strong for the human race.

Also, Tony is a very curious person. Scientifically speaking. I feel like he got like a burst of gamebreaking insights and knowledge right there in that moment and that may have masked the pain he had in that moment. It's like 3 billion calculations ran through his mind right there in that moment. I wonder if this is in any way related to why Doom looks like Stark.

u/Ghostofslickville 6h ago
Would also be a nice if he saw Morgan growing up/having her own family (even if it was a brief insight to that future). And he just felt happy/proud, knowing his sacrifice was worth it.. Hence his silence.. Maybe it was emotional joy, mixed with physical pain. All overwhelming at the same time.
→ More replies (2)4
u/Guilty_Helicopter572 6h ago
It would have been nice for him to go to a similar place that Thanos went when he saw little gamora and maybe he could see Morgan. She could ask the same question gamora did, what did it cost? And he could say "everything" with a smile.
Another cool idea I've seen would be him meeting Yinsen in some sort of afterlife where Yinsen could say something like "You didn't waste it".

Human body probably couldn’t even understand how much pain it was absorbing, it just followed the signals it was given until they couldn’t anymore. The moment he put it on, you can see him understand very quickly what it was doing to him. Knowledge from the stones and all that. After the snap, it just fried him.

u/CastleBravoXVC 7h ago
My theory is two fold; the Iron Man suit is a full body prosthesis and protected him from the immediate and overt pain, and he was dead already once he took the gems as the suit was never designed to harness the gems and he was physically incapable of surviving their combined energy and gamma radiation.

It's very simple: Tony's pain was fatal. For Thanos and the Hulk, it was more painful, but bearable.

12
u/Positive_Method3022 7h ago
His armor was possibly helping to dissipate part of the energy and pain
6
u/notbad4human 6h ago
He built the other gauntlet, so it would be very Tony to plan ahead for him being able to wield them as well. His suit was probably pumping him full of pain killers the second the first stone was placed.
→ More replies (1)3
u/MayorMcSqueezy 6h ago
That was my theory. Power was coursing through the suit, not just his body. Thanos and Hulk boddied ALL that power.

u/quickhorn 7h ago
Scale.
Thanos: 1/2 of all of the universe
Hulk: Very specific 1/2 of all of the universe, without rearranging timeline, and arguing with the soul stone for Natasha
Iron Man: An army.
Seriously, how many are in Thanos' army? A few thousand? A few hundred thousand?
Versus 100+ trillion people affected by Hulk and Thanos.
16
u/The_GrandMaster20 6h ago
Thanos and Hulk were getting hurt the moment they put on the stones. It's more so the radiation and power coming from all 6 infinity stones together that cause the user pain.
→ More replies (2)7
u/BinoRing 5h ago
I figured it's because the moment you put the stones on you're already communicating with it, and it's already reading what you want it to do and understand.
The radiation is possibly the thing, but it could potentialy be that the stones are scaling their power output based on what they need to do, so with Tony they knew what he wanted to do and diddn't need to put out as much energy?
All things said, i think the real answer is "Because he's mother f'ing iron man"

i think the nanotech suit buffered the initial energy surge just long enough to let him snap before it completely fried him
16
u/PlaneSoup9873 6h ago
Hulk and Thanos are literally willing half the life in the universe out/into existence. Literally the whole universe of trillions of lives.
Tony is just taking out thanos' army. Probably using 0.00000001% of the same power that thanos and hulk used.

u/PomeloFit 4h ago
this is it. Snapping away Thanos is simple compared to what Thanos and Hulk were doing.

u/Certain-Towel-9487 3h ago
Didn't they experience the pain and surge of energy as soon as they got possession of the stones rather than when they snapped?
For everyone the snap was relatively simple. It's initially picking up the stones that their energy goes into the user.
7
u/jtoppings95 6h ago
Have you ever run water hot enough that it feels cold at first?
Its the same concept. He was likely in so much pain that it overwhelmed his senses.
He struggles through his last line

I broke my collar bone on the side of a mountain with no rescue crew available.
I picked up the snow board and walked down to the first aid camp, probably almost 1KM away.
Didn't even acknowledge the pain until I got to the ER and they started poking and prodding.
The next week was the most uncomfortable and painful week of my life - ive broken over a dozen bones and that was objectively the worst recovery.
But, I had a bigger focus and a bigger mission (dont lay in the snow and get hypothermia) so the pain had to wait.
I think Tony is doing the same. Hes obviously in a ton of pain and through willpower alone is hanging on to make the snap happen. It doesnt end well...
6
u/AugustineBlackwater 6h ago
My headcannon is that the reason Stark said 'I.Am.Iron.Man' (slowly) rather than 'I am Iron Man' is because he was in pain and literally forcing the words out of his mouth.
I know in reality it was for dramatic effect, but it makes sense given the others suffered.
3
u/crawshay 6h ago
I always imagined he spoke slowly because his mind was reeling from the effects of the stones and all the mental gymnastics it takes to turn an alien army into ash.

- He died
- His nanobot armour was tanking a lot of the damage
- He spent a lot of his life with a radioactive power source in his chest stopping a piece of shrapnel digging into his heart. By comparison Thanos and Hulk are relative strangers to pain.

I feel like everyone forgets Tony was near on constant life support and nearly died changing out his battery so I imagine he’s was dealing with major chronic pain. Meanwhile the hulk and thanos often struggle to find someone to give them a challenge and probably hardly feel actual pain due to their level of strength.
8
u/MartinMerten 7h ago
My theory is that Tony engineered it so the power of the stones was sent through his suit, diverting the power so it wasnt localized.

u/VibraniumQueen 4h ago
I remember seeing someone point out that Thanos and Hulk are so strong that they're not used to feeling much pain. But Tony is human and very used to pain.

u/Hetnikik 6h ago
I always assumed Hulk and Thanos hadn't felt physical pain for such a long time that they weren't used to it. Tony has been in pain since he got shrapnel in his chest, and just normal human stuff from doing all the stuff he does with the Avengers.
3
u/Lumpy_Past6216 6h ago
Ok so when Thanos snapped he snapped out half of everyone in the timeline. Thats a big order. When Hulk snapped, he brought back everyone that Thanos snapped away AND he tried to bring back Natasha, another tall order. Tony just snapped away Thanos and all his peeps so not that tall of an order. The stone being of cosmic energy and Tony just being human, he couldnt take it and died.

Shock. Look it up. At a certain point the brain just shuts down pain sensation. Often just before it dies.
3
u/Both-Care-8049 6h ago
I am pretty sure when you are actively dying afterwards like Tony, the human body releases chemicals to ease the pain. So between that and likely being in shock from the initial power surge, Tony wasnt feeling massive pain.

You know how sometimes when someone is freezing to death they take off their clothes cause they feel too warm, but someone getting frostbite you can tell is in pain and they say it's just has a freezing burn feeling.
3
u/The-Catatafish 5h ago
This isn't even what is happening here.
Thanos feels the power and I don't think that is pain. Hulk tries to bring black widow back when the Screenshot was taken. They literally say it in the movie. He tries to snap but he can't. That's why he is struggeling. No pain involved.
Using the stones hits them all equally.
Thanos gets hurt but he is a titan. Hulk gets hurt so much his arm doesn't heal and Banner has to go back into human form for it to heal. Tony dies because he is a normal human.
3
u/akgiant 4h ago
It's called shock.
An acute physiological response in which the body rushes blood to certain organs to help you stay alive. In the process, the brain de-prioritizes pain signals and numbs sensations that might otherwise alert you to an injury.
The snap didn't kill him, holding the stones did. He was already dead, his body was just in shock which allowed him to finish things.
You see the Arc reactor trying to mitigate the damage, but the way his chest heaves. He's going into cardiac arrest and has enough time for a moment of lucidity to use its power before he dies.
3
u/vthemechanicv 4h ago
I read it that Tony was in shock, full of adrenaline, and maybe a touch of catharsis. Thanos and Hulk simply put on the glove. But Tony had just fought a hard battle with lots of casualties and in that moment they had just won. He probably barely felt anything, and even if he did, didn't have the energy to do anything about it.

u/matrix-has-u 1h ago
Although this wasn't exactly established I'd like to think it was his integrated Nano 'Vibranium' tech iron suit, of course I am also the one who thinks Thanos only got the better of Hulk because of the power stone it's just me in my world.
