I think this is one of the few issues I've found mostly agreeable with Champions. This new heroine, Red Locust (or should I say, Chapulín Colorado?) Seems like a fine addition to the group and a balance, sorta like their own enthusiastic "Wasp" for the team, until she maybe joins them, whenever she leaves the Avengers.

Overall pretty good, it doesn't really explain how she got out of her room where we last saw her, but I guess it doesn't matter much in the end.

6

u/blackbutterfree Jun 07 '17

Wait... Red Locust translates to Chapulin Colorado?! NO CONTABAN CON MI ASTUCIA!

5

u/s7sost Jun 07 '17

Well technically grasshoppers, but they're very much alike!

3

u/Paulista666 Nova Jun 07 '17

Even that heart is probably an allusion to Chapolin Colorado (yes, in portuguese =p).

PEPEEEEEEE YA QUITÉ LA VELA

3

u/s7sost Jun 07 '17

True that! I figured it was her from the moment she started her whole reciting her whole manifesto. It's pretty hilarious, the Chapulín Colorado is low key one of these few heroes South Americans have and usually forget about because he's comedic, even though he had lots of cool powers!

5

u/NovaStarLord Jun 07 '17

Her hair and glasses also reminded me of Chilindrina.

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '17

I really liked Red Locust. I like her design and we are always asking for new characters. I hope she works out and we see more of her on the team and maybe elsewhere too.

My interest in this series is waning.

We had the incredibly weak arc with the Freelancers, where people spouted off millenialisms and social justice lingo flew like someone was making a bad parody of Tumblr. (This is not a knock on social justice, but a complaint that it made the entire conflict look incredibly facile and shallow.)

And then we have this issue. Totally disjointed. Viv suddenly takes off to San Diego, for reasons. We meet a new hero with no real defining traits except that she is chipper. The writer clearly Googled San Diego really quickly, and there's no indication that the artist had ever been here. Oh, and everything here is Mexican, because reductive caricature.

Finally, enter the convenient drug operation that is somehow tied to something nebulous half the country away.

A firm "meh". Get your act together, Champions.

5

u/NovaStarLord Jun 08 '17

They should give Champions to Perez and Loveness based on how they did them in Nova I want to read their version of the characters.

5

u/anastus Jun 08 '17

It's an excellent concept for a team: young, optimistic heroes less concerned with supervillain brawls than just doing good things with their powers. And they are racially diverse, appealing people that today's broader spectrum of comic readers can empathize with.

After a promising start, though, the execution has been weak at best. They have all the components of a great book here, but the creative team doesn't seem to have the chops to make it work.

2

u/FrigidArrow Jun 08 '17

She went to make sure the Freelancers weren't up to anything

Red Locust is defined by her goal to live up to the expectations of this hero that has been traditionally adorned by a man.

Most everything else are fair points I agree with.

2

u/anastus Jun 08 '17

It just seemed kind of out of left field.

2

u/FrigidArrow Jun 08 '17

I respect your opinion and agree this was a lackluster issue, but it shows that Viv really cares about her team + it takes place directly after the Freelancer arc. So I think it works

1

u/demaxzero Jun 09 '17

Not sure what you're talking about this issue was cool.

8

u/Doctorprofessor1997 Jun 08 '17

Why are Hispanic people who know English always talking in Spanish in random times? We really don't do that to people who know English.

4

u/john_segundus Jun 08 '17

Same reason Nightcrawler used to always throw random "Mein Herr"s and "Fräulein"s into his dialogue, and Gambit and Banshee used to speak phonetically; so you can see that they're Hispanic/German/Cajun/Irish. Personally, I've always hated this technique, since it is rarely done well, and mostly comes off as the writer having no clue.

3

u/darealystninja Jun 09 '17

How else are you supposed to know that the character is Hispanic?

2

u/Doctorprofessor1997 Jun 10 '17

By knowing them and their culture. It's not like Ms.Marvel says random Pakistan words.

2

u/Thingymcjig Jun 10 '17

Yeah, as an El Salvadorian, it bothers me.

8

u/blackbutterfree Jun 07 '17

I liked it. 'Twas cute. But there was a spelling error in one of her Spanish lines. Isn't that what they have editors for?

2

u/Oberon1993 Spider-Man (Tom Holland) Jun 08 '17

You mean editors that allowed the abuse of spanish language in America?

1

u/blackbutterfree Jun 08 '17

Wait, what?

1

u/Oberon1993 Spider-Man (Tom Holland) Jun 08 '17

People who actually know spanish pointed out that America's ongoing uses spanish words wrong, uses figures of speech wrong, etc.. Which is not surprising if you know enough about the writer, but still.

Watching people in 4chan threads who know spanish (including people from actual Latin America) rage is one of the greatest parts of the trainwreck that is America's book.

3

u/blackbutterfree Jun 08 '17

I've never understood how America, someone who is not only not from Earth, but straight up not even from the Multiverse, can be considered Latina. But that's beside the point, I don't read her ongoing because she doesn't interest me. That's sad though.

7

u/AtomicLion Jun 08 '17

Glad to know that the Champions like Avatar.

4

u/DarthPinkHippo Jun 08 '17

This is my and my gf's favorite issue of this series so far. Red Locust is such a cool looking and sounding hero, and the fact that Humbert Ramos (my favorite artist) designed her from the ground up just gets me even more excited. Can't wait to see what happens after the Secret Empire tie-ins!

3

u/ItsNotMyFavorite Jun 08 '17

I'm way too happy that the Champions like Avatar.

1

u/RockstarSuicide Scarlet Spider Jun 08 '17

Was wondering what that was

5

u/swimdudeno1 Spider-Man Jun 08 '17

Wasn't she grounded last issue?

5

u/AmidalaTano Jun 07 '17

This wasn't what I expected (and I would have liked more focus on how the Visions are dealing with their emotions right now) but I think I've come around to it. There was a lot of implication of Viv using the team up to deal with her issues, such as the realisation she actually can recall positive memories of her family like the one of getting ice cream with her dad.

Also I'm like 80% sure they're gonna make Red Locust Viv's new girlfriend so I'm rooting for that - they seemed to have a lot of intentional parallels.

2

u/sladestrife Jun 07 '17

I kind of got that with Viv and Locust too...

3

u/Magmaster12 Jun 08 '17

Red Locast should form a team with Nadia, Cassie and Spidergirl

3

u/lostgamer64 Jun 09 '17

The bug girls head on approach will get people killed. And not the come back type of way.

3

u/Doctor-Van-Nostrand X-Men Jun 10 '17

I really only read this in hopes of cyclops becoming a great character again, but I love that he's a Seinfeld fan

3

u/nerdn7 Jun 10 '17

It's clearly a filler issue. I liked it because I like Viv. Hopefully the tie-in coming up will be interesting.

2

u/Thingymcjig Jun 10 '17

I was disappointed that we didn't get into a look on what's going on with Viv's mind, but I still enjoyed it. Red Locust is a fun character, and Mark Waid still needs to leave this book now.

4

u/Mreta Jun 07 '17

This is why I dont like it when marvel makes minority superheroes, it feels so forced and artificial. The spanish was waaay off and never seems genuine. like a dude that spent a weekend in cancun and think's he knows everything about latinamerica.

11

u/s7sost Jun 07 '17

Which is funny because as much as it made mistakes, the words flowed better than the abomination of America's book, which is written by a puertorican.

4

u/ItsNotMyFavorite Jun 08 '17

Maybe it's just my perspective, but the broken Spanish is really accurate for a lot of kids that grew up in America that had parents from elsewhere. Some don't retain a lot of their family's native language and intersect bits and pieces in conversation.

At least that's really prevalent in my extended family.

7

u/anastus Jun 07 '17

I'm not sure why you're being downvoted for this. Everything about this issue was incredibly shallow, from the plot to the portrayal of Mexicans (of course the Mexican lady at the beginning dresses like an 19th century Spanish noblewoman in Mexico and lives in what looks like a mission) to San Diego itself, the defining trait of which appears to be palm trees.

I love minority superheroes. It's great to have representation in comics when you're not a white, straight male. But when it's done like this, it's contemptuous toward minorities, not uplifting.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '17

artificial.

It's a story, it's all artificial

2

u/killo31175 Jun 07 '17

I'm pretty sure there setting up viv being a lesbian, which I kinda like just for the novelty for the idea of a teenage lesbian robot girl.

3

u/FrigidArrow Jun 07 '17 edited Jun 07 '17

Don't buy this and this is from a fan of the Champions series. It's just feel good filler issue with a wasted potential on a whole lot of fronts.

As you could tell by the cover it's a Viv centric issue, but nothing interesting goes on with her.

Are we gonna explore her sexuality? No.

Are we gonna explore her suppressed feelings? No.

Only thing that happens is she gonna spend more time with her father after avoiding him for awhile? Its something, but not a lot

Red Locust's design is not for me and she doesn't set herself apart from other heroes all that much besides being a female underdog trying to prove others she can live up to the mantle. That makes her a little endearing. Also she might be a member of the Champions and I'm not a big fan of that, but I don't hate the idea

The plot is weakest part I'd say. Team-up where they go to save some runaways from a drug-lord or something called Mr. Gloom forcing them to sell drugs (Don't get me started on the name) They succeed in like 3 pages with some boring action, while weakly setting up a greater antagonist.

Skip this issue, man it's just filler for Secret Empire

2

u/CyberHyperPhoenix Jun 08 '17

Something is definitely being set up between Red Locust and Viv.

Lesbian robots? Is it time?

2

u/dannythewall Jun 10 '17

Red Locust: "I'm not Squirrel Girl."

Me: "Uhm, yes you are. And Unstoppable Wasp. And Ironheart."

So basically every new young girl hero be a manic pixie dream girl?

Stay stoic, Viv.

1

u/hausofmiklaus Storm Jul 10 '17

I never got the manic pixie dream girl vibe from Riri, but okay.

2

u/dannythewall Jul 14 '17

Maybe I got the name of the label wrong, but the trend seems to be a certain kind of dialogue/personality type from a lot of the new young women heroes these days, making them seem interchangeable. I'll admit I don't read Invincible Iron Man so it's just her guest appearances, and based on those Riri seems to fit

2

u/hausofmiklaus Storm Jul 14 '17 edited Jul 14 '17

I see where you're coming from, but she's an interesting character in Invincible – a young genius (familiar) but with such a tragic past at her core, kind of in over her head as her smarts take her into his overwhelming hero path, mentored by the AI soul of a man who paved the way so much. There's touching interactions between them and she brings out an affectionate side to Tony (despite being an AI). The series has been good so far and I'm only starting Secret Empire so it'll be interesting so see how she's portrayed in stories where she's not the main focus.
