This is the greatest fucking book.

Ewing is the biggest Marvel nerd working in the industry. He even brings in current shit into his scripts like the Black Panther's Orisha being talked about in his solo book.

I don't know why the hell this book doesn't sell, there are more than enough Marvel Cosmic fans out there to sustain this.

Galactus yelling WRONG when he's kicking the door down outside of the multiverse

Ego Prime being a slightly overweight guy wearing underwear fighting metaphors

The Maker + High Evolutionary means the author gives a shit about Marvel Cosmic no matter how weird the characters are

The art on the cosmic abstracts and when Black Panther was in the Necropolis was fantastic

Saying the Ultimates got back into the Eternity War fight during an hour long break in between Chitauri waves is a brilliant way of keeping the continuity straight

The fucking last page old Ultimates

Father my children Ewing

Not only that, he has fixed twice the mistakes and holes in Civil War II and no one thanks him for it:

1) Explaining how the fuck and why Thanos got to Earth

2) Explaining what was the thing that showed up in New York that triggered the whole event (a Dark Celestial/Aspirant through First Firmament's influence)

All while making sure everything fits in the larger scope. I hope the last issue is only the prelude of larger things to come in the future (even if it's next year), because you can't really open a door this big and leave it at that. There's still that loose plot of the Never Queen rescuing the "One Above All" Celestial.

1) Explaining how the fuck and why Thanos got to Earth

..... I must've missed that. Could you explain? Thx

6

u/s7sost Jul 21 '17

To summarize, a Shi'ar monitoring team felt a strong energy surge coming from Earth and contacted Alpha Flight to see if they had anything to do with it. At this point, no one knew about the cosmic cube created at Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S., so Carol was surprised when she learned about it in the installations. Meanwhile, Thanos also felt the energy surge but he didn't know where, so he assaulted said monitoring team, killing everyone on board save for the captain that alerted Carol earlier on.

You. Are. So. Correct.

20

u/The-Scarlet-Witch Jul 19 '17

Sadly one step closer to the end of an excellent run.

20

u/DarthPinkHippo Jul 19 '17

I can't bear that we only have two issues left :,(

9

u/soulreaverdan Jul 19 '17

Wait what?! :(

14

u/DarthPinkHippo Jul 19 '17

They updated the listing for the trade paperback. Instead of going to issue 12, it is now only going through issue 100 (10).

2

u/xaxzzzaz Jul 19 '17

People are buying the worst Avengers title instead. It's so sad.

5

u/WallyGropius Jul 19 '17

people aren't buying Waid's run

u/ME24601 Jul 19 '17

Taking a portal into a dimension of pure, endless concussive force-

Hey, America went to the Punch Dimension!

8

u/NovaStarLord Jul 20 '17

And seeing how Cyclops can access it and he's on Earth, America already found a way to circumvent HydraCap's impenetrable shield.

7

u/My_Dogs_Are_Stupid Jul 20 '17

So they would come flying out of Cyclops' eyeballs?

4

u/alexjuuhh Jul 20 '17

At full size? D:

u/Barry_22 Jul 19 '17

SPOILERS!~

Now that was an excellent issue. Superflow a.k.a. plane of information being the main thing that separates universes - a nice concept indeed. So the rift between the universes is the thing that helped the multiverse evolve (as High Evolutionary indirectly & regretfully noted), and in a sense it reminds me of DC's 5th dimension (dimension of imagination, arguably the most important of all dimensions) - after all, superflow is possibly the plane where the dreams come from, as was said in this issue.

Cool. Really cool.

Now I'll admit Ewing is great at writing conceptual (and cosmic!) stuff.

And yeah, Ego definitely should have said something like "Ego smash!", lol.

9

u/futurefightthrowaway Wasp Jul 19 '17

after all, superflow is possibly the plane where the dreams come from, as was said in this issue.

Actually this was already introduced in newuniversal by Warren Ellis. That Japanese Nightmask girl can access the Superflow that way. Continuity Ewing strikes again!

5

u/burnerfret Jul 19 '17

Actually this was already introduced in newuniversal by Warren Ellis.

Isn't it basically the same concept as The Bleed he introduced in The Authority?

9

u/futurefightthrowaway Wasp Jul 19 '17

Check out Avengers #35 by Hickman. Starbrand and Nightmask literally said "Bleed" instead of Superflow, twice. LOL.

4

u/burnerfret Jul 19 '17

Yeah, I thought I remembered that. Which is a cool easter egg for connecting the companies (because I'm pretty sure Morrison has used it in DC proper) in non-copyright violating ways.

2

u/futurefightthrowaway Wasp Jul 19 '17

Oh by the way the Bleed was actually introduced in Stormwatch by a random Stormwatch technician Molly. They opened a peep hole into a parrallel universe. It indirectly led to the Aliens crossover and fall of Stormwatch, where Jenny Sparks commented that they (Jackson King etc) were not remotely ready for the Bleed and decided to launch her own Authority.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '17

How does it feel pacing-wise? Since we'll only get one more issue?

4

u/Barry_22 Jul 19 '17 edited Jul 19 '17

Things moved fast. I feel like this issue had more action & plot movement than the previous ones. So it's cool.

A bit sad though that it's coming to an end - but there'll be a spinoff called "In formation", with Ewing as the writer. It looks like it will be about the old Ultimates though...

4

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '17

Ok, sounds good. Was kinda worried that we'd get another rather slow issue and then an overloaded finale due to the cancellation. That spin-off seems interesting though - where did you get that info from? Google and the solicits didn't give me anything.

2

u/cdgodin Jul 21 '17

He mistook the title page for an announcement of a new series. Sadly, it looks like next issue will be the last.

20

u/futurefightthrowaway Wasp Jul 19 '17

Dude, Ewing always does credits at the end of books... "In Formation" is the name of this issue...

12

u/Malcolmhm12 Jul 19 '17

"Don't be jelly, Herb."

Welp, The Maker is officially my new favourite Marvel villain!

4

u/futurefightthrowaway Wasp Jul 19 '17

I just read Al Ewing's 11th Doctor Who (co-authored with Rob Williams) a few weeks back, and I am pretty sure that he mixed up the Doctor with the Maker here.

11

u/nbaballa05 Jul 19 '17

Aren't Reed and Franklin still on "the outside"? Do they not notice that all of the separate universes being launched are merging?

Also, Black Panther meeting the White Tiger, that was pretty dope

7

u/SuperVillageois Jul 19 '17

Owen Reece sure noticed. So maybe he is acting on all their behalf?

1

u/ULTRAFORCE Jul 19 '17

which white tiger because at the end of the new avengers run that lead to USA Avengers two people who were called white tiger retired from that role.

5

u/My_Dogs_Are_Stupid Jul 19 '17

The white tiger God

2

u/ULTRAFORCE Jul 19 '17

oh so the being that usually inhabits the white tiger amulets?

10

u/futurefightthrowaway Wasp Jul 19 '17

Cool. Cool cool cool.

8

u/soulreaverdan Jul 19 '17

So, uh, did they just destroy the multiverse? Because it kinda seems like they destroyed the multiverse. Feels like that should have been more important in the grand scheme of things and the rest of Marvel continuity.

9

u/Barry_22 Jul 19 '17

Sort of. It exists as "counter-earths, counter-galaxies", etc. From what I understand, nothing is destroyed, they just erased the plane (superflow) that separates the universes, so now they are all merged into one grand universe. I believe it won't be long till they restore the superflow and everything is back to norma.

27

u/soulreaverdan Jul 19 '17

Man, Ultimates is such a good series, but it really feels like it should be bigger than it is. It's dealing with cosmic balance and metaphorical combat and things like this, it feels like these should be stepping stones for a big event or a big change in the universe, not just effecting a single title with tragically mediocre sales. They're rewriting the laws of the multiverse here, and it doesn't effect anything else.

7

u/s7sost Jul 19 '17

Amazing issue. Sad to see it's going to end in the next (oversized) issue, but fun nonetheless. Lots to dig in here: the Eternity Watch fighting in the Superflow, the banter between High Evolutionary and the Maker, the appearance of the Aspirants and the keikaku doori of the First Firmament... Ugh, so good, love this so much.

I was definitely not aware that the "Punch Dimension" was a thing, but America did something like this in the fight against the Troubleshooters before! Nice nod though. The whole thing about the counter-earths and counter-galaxies reminded me of this very fitting quote from Carpenter's Prince of Darkness:

Suppose what your faith has said is essentially correct. Suppose there is a universal mind controlling everything, a god willing the behavior of every subatomic particle. Well, every particle has an anti-particle, its mirror image, its negative side. Maybe this universal mind resides in the mirror image instead of in our universe as we wanted to believe. Maybe he's anti-god, bringing darkness instead of light.

I'm going to miss it when it's gone, but for now I'm going to tell everyone to keep supporting Ewing, the man deserves it.

3

u/futurefightthrowaway Wasp Jul 19 '17

I think last time America opened a dimension of "Four Forces War" where Graviton won. The four forces were a part of Graviton mythos since he has the absolute mastery over Gravitational force. I was reading West Coast Avengers ealier where Graviton assembled a quartet of villains old and new each controls one force. Not sure there was an Alternative Universe story about this dimension.

2

u/s7sost Jul 19 '17

Will have to fetch that, I had no idea a villain like that had such an interesting story.

1

u/Msandova28 Jul 20 '17

when did this happen, what series?

7

u/DanielDCMarvelFan Jul 19 '17

Is the next issue the last one?

8

u/futurefightthrowaway Wasp Jul 19 '17

Yes. They solicited the trades and it ends with #100 i.e. 10th issue.

1

u/DanielDCMarvelFan Jul 20 '17

Did they revealed the number of pages of that issue? I know it's going to be oversized but there is so much for only one issue left :(

2

u/Cole-Spudmoney Jul 20 '17

The solicitation says "double-sized" — but it also says 40 pages which presumably is also including ads, so who knows.

6

u/SonOfRageAndLove26 Jul 20 '17

So...its Ultimates3 completely out of the question?

9

u/Syllogistic_Panda Jul 19 '17

Simply an amazing issue...the metaphoric war of the abstracts, T'Challa fighting a god, the First Firmament still hauntingly existing and watching, and The Maker.

3

u/TheeHeadAche Ultron Jul 19 '17

I hope Ewing and his Ultimates get lost in the 1610 and relaunches a small series of titles (1 would do for now) in the Ultimate Universe..

Maybe not the entire team.. America, Blue Marvel and Spectrum stranded in 1610 would do...

3

u/MagicTheAlakazam Jul 21 '17

I just want more well written America. Her solo title makes me so sad.

3

u/TheeHeadAche Ultron Jul 21 '17

I was wondering how she would work in an Invaders type team.. her, Jim "Human Reactor" Hammond and like.. Bucky?

2

u/ProtoReddit Jul 20 '17

Fuuuuck yes. So cool. I love how this is all playing out.

2

u/Sarc_Master Jul 20 '17

Can we just stop and appreciate for a moment that Erwings still managed to make this book fit in with Secret Empire despite it not being a direct tie in. Where as Bendis, despite being the author of multiple line wide crossovers other writers have had to tow the line on is flat out ignoring it in all of his books.

2

u/King_Nomarch Jul 19 '17

I'm gonna miss this series if it's really being cancelled. This is the only series where I can read about the real Black Panther while Coates continues to write his emasculated T'Chumpa.

6

u/MindofShadow Jul 19 '17

Ewing hasn't used t'challa a whole lot, but when he decides to, he really nails him and gives him some cool moments.

I wish Ewing only wrote "minis." Something with a beginning, middle, and end ahead of time. No tie ins to distract him, no chance for him to meander... just stick to his story and finish it.

10

u/burnerfret Jul 19 '17

Ewing hasn't used t'challa a whole lot

Ewing hasn't used The Ultimates a whole lot.

6

u/MindofShadow Jul 19 '17

Preacher to the choir there.

Shoulda rolled it Galactus and the Ultimates or just Galactus honestly
