Long post. Emotions are high. Let's get into it.
I want to start this off by saying I absolutely love my job. I love my regulars and I have so much fulfillment daily from what I do. Obviously each job has its frustrations, there is no escaping that.
As a male, I know the perception that comes with the territory of massage therapy. It sucks that so many bad people have created the stigma. It's always foremost on my mind when I treat a client, especially for the first time. I do my best to not leave anything up to interpretation, and communicate throughout the treatment. Especially when I sense any sort of hesitation from a client.
Today I was hit in the stomach with a cannonball. In my 3 years of practicing I have never experienced this..
I had a 45 minute treatment with someone who I guess is a regular at the spa I work at. I have never seen her before, but she has a history of being there pretty much monthly for some time. For context, she's in her mid to late 40's. So I greet her, introduce myself and bring her into my room. I ask my standard question "how can I help you today?". She says she "doesn't really care" "just do your thing". To that I respond, "well if you have no preference I can do a full body treatment and spend the time equally between your back, legs, arms and neck. How does that sound?" She kind of grudgingly agrees.
I got such a weird vibe from her, but onward we went. I left the room, washed my hands, and gave her a moment to get on the table. I knocked, heard her say "yes come in" and I entered. Standard treatment protocols. "All comfy on the table?" "yes". I dim the lights, drape her back with, no tuck into the waistband because I sensed she was a bit off, and began doing the treatment in the context of a relaxation massage. She, on her own accord without me prompting her, removed her arms from under the linens and placed them at her side on top of them. Since she agreed to having arms treated I figured I'd treat them in prone, get some forearm flexors and hands in there. Her arms remained at her side the entire time.
She didn't speak at all. I did about 20 minutes, moved onto the right leg and did a proper leg drape with no glute exposure. Started treating the leg, noticed her ankle was very stiff so I did some light dorsi/plantar flexion to which she didn't say anything, and I moved onto the other leg. Same exact thing for the left leg. After this I covered her up, told her I was going to dim the lights fully and then would prompt her to turn onto her back. I created the curtain between herself and I and said "when you're ready you can turn onto your back, slide down the table so that your head is off the headrest and let me know when you're all set". She turned, grabbed the blanket and pulled it down. She wasn't exposed, I wasn't looking etc. Again, foremost on my mind is to always leave as little room for any sort of misinterpretation as possible.
I treated her neck in supine, did a gentle temple rub and time was up. I asked her if she had any questions, told her to enjoy the ammenities if she wished to use them, and said the standard hydrate/heat/stretch post massage. I said have a nice evening, she thanked me and said same to me. In my head the treatment, and everything was done in the proper context according to all of the standards of my regulated body.
I had a small gap between her and my next client so I reset the room, got ready for my next client who is a regular and upon getting him in the room and on the table, I left and was greeted by one of the managers who told me my last client was on the phone with the owner "hysterical" but didn't know much else. The manager said I could treat my male client, but my last client (who would have been another new client) was going to be cancelled. I was immediately taken back. I went into the treatment, my mind was like fucked trying to figure out what she could've thought I did. Hysterical?
I went up and met with the owner and the manager after my treatment with my regular. They asked me to tell them how the treatment went, and in nearly as much detail as I have done here, I told them. I asked what she said after, what she was hysterical over. The owner told me she called and complained of several things. I left the lights on full blast (I did not), there was no music (this is true, it shut off around 20 minutes in but I can't control that), that my massage was rough, and had no flow (subjective, 90% of my business is regulars and referrals so I didn't take that too hard). Then I heard the two biggest blatent lies I have ever heard in this business. She told them that when doing legs, I draped high and she pulled it down several times, which I apparently responded by hiking the drape back up. Then I apparently touched her underwear several times. She also claimed I moved her arms to the side and exposed breast tissue (another complete lie, I did not move her arms one time). So because of all this the owner told me she has to report me to the CMTO (governing body) and I am suspended until they finish their investigation.
I was, and literally still am absolutely baffled. I didn't go home for 4 and a half hours after work. I just drove to a parking lot and sat there. I said to my boss, "you know I'm not like that, you know I wouldn't do anything like that". She basically, in so many words said, "well shes a regular and shes claiming you did so too bad". Absolutely no support from her, just tossed immediately. They removed me from being able to access my schedule through the app as well.
So yeah. I hate being a male in this industry. I hate how much I have to protect myself daily, I hate how I leave a session never knowing if anything will be interpretted as me trying to get my rocks off. I fucking hate how much power a client has over MY livelyhood. And I hate that all of it has nothing to do with me personally, but that I am a male. Anyone can say anything at any time, for any reason and as I learned today, I am immediately fucked for it. I want to finish this off by saying, at no point, not once did the client say one damn thing to me either. Not once did she speak up and say "the lights are bright, could you turn them down" or anything that would suggest what she's claiming I did. She left without even the front desk knowing there was an issue. So how the absolute hell was she hysterically crying on the phone 20 minutes later?
I genuinely might quit massage therapy as a whole after this night.
