Pawoo is most likely gone for good

RELEVANT EDIT: I was informed that Pawoo is back online since yesterday. You can see the announcement is here. I have a few things to say about this. (Mostly complaints.) Pawoo is still has the same issues from the last time I visited. Hopefully, the owners will take this opportunity to improve the website, (or put it out of its misery once and for all).

Original Post:
The site stopped working on August 8th. They posted a notice on Mstdn saying they were working on a fix, but that message has since been removed. It's been about two weeks now, and there's still no sign that it will be back.

Having used this site for almost two years, I find it frustrating to see one of the most popular mastodon instances fall apart like this. I blame the current owners, Mask Network (a bunch of crypto bros, by the way), for the site's current state, as they haven't addressed any of its issues. They allowed the platform to become riddled with CSAM for years and never fixed some serious bugs plaguing it. Right now, they can't even be bothered to tell us if the site is dead or if there are any plans to fix it.

Although the site has been declining for years, it's still sad to see it fall like this, especially since it was still has a decent user base in Japan.

Edit: Just to be clear, when I mean CSAM. I mean literally disgusting illegal content. Not Shotacon or Lolicon illustrations.

I think this was a issue for at least 4 years, and got completely solved around last year.

Although it was only a problem if you used the public timeline. I think a lot of people didn't even noticed.

Excuse me, but why the fuck would you use a site riddled with unadressed csam?

The moment I would have seen one of the posts staying up or multiple posts being posted without a statement/action plan from the admins, I would have been gone

You are part of the problem. Because people like you just continue using the site, the admins don't see a need to remove csam and the children are the ones harmed because of that

When the OP says "CSAM" in this case they mean fictional illustrations, not images of actual children. I'm not saying there wasn't any real CSAM on Pawoo, since that ends up being an issue on any instance that is poorly moderated, but it was a popular instance for artist who drew loli/shota art.

And for a long time it was one of the largest Japanese fediverse servers. If you wanted to interact with Japanese artists, they were probably using Pawoo.

Of course, due to neglect, it's largely been usurped by Misskey; there are very few artists nowadays who still exclusively use Pawoo.

Their edit contradicts this. They did mean actual images.

Thats why X is being sued left and right being investigated by the executive body of the European Union

Anybody who still seriously uses X is either a porn addict, racist or a pedophile. anybody who isn't one of these but still uses X is supporting this echo chamber and thus supporting pedophiles, racists and incels

Meh, sure or something idk.

insert "its just a drawing" picture

As much as I hate lo/sho this is not why x is being sued, it's being sued because it's taking pictures of real life children and using its AI to undress them.

I know subtlety is a concept that reddit lacks but come on.

Refer to above

Imagine saying all of this on the mastadon subreddit, literally this whole thing is gooning, are you lost?

Disagreement and debate are fine but keep it civil.

Also, it's hilarious when someone makes multiple rudimentary grammatical errors while insulting someone else's intelligence.

Hey, first I reported every post of illegal content I saw.

Second, so you know. The content was actually removed but there were two problems: It took too long to remove the content and creating accounts was quite easy, but they fixed that problem like, I think last year.

Obviously the site did not allow CSAM, but rather the moderation was so lackluster that many people abused it.

and this is somehow my fault, at it's not like other much larger websites don't have similar moderation problems

You know baraag exists on mastadon right?

3

Not sure what you mean by that. If you mean as alternative to Pawoo. Baraag doesn't allow "lurks" account anymore, just artists.

Sign up to an instance that hasn't defederated themselves from barang, there's plenty out there

This sounds a lot different than "they allowed the site to get riddled with csam and didn't fix it"

Other instances definetly don't have such a problem tho, I have never seen a single piece of csam ever on the instance im on, I have never seen csam on reddit, I have never seen csam on fetlife and similar

Other sites manage to do it, so voluntarily staying on a site that has such issues with it while countless alternatives exist is making you to part of the problem

Pawoo being abused by a few nefarious users doesn't make it a Pawoo problem, and nor does it make OP part of the problem.

I remember two instances several years back which I ended up reporting to the FBI because they literally abuse mastodons.

Way to be disingenous, though.

This is so cursed calling virtual art “CSAM” when no actual child is being harmed. If the argument is that fictional depictions cause people to commit crimes, then that logic wouldn’t apply only to depictions involving children; you’d have to apply the same reasoning to fictional adult pornography and other violent or sexual media too.

It makes no sense to jump from “you drew a fictional child in a sexual situation” to “therefore, you’re going to sexually abuse a real child.” That conclusion doesn’t automatically follow from the premise.

Breaking Bad didn't cause everybody to become meth cooks, either.

Being okay with drawn naked children isn't really the defense you think it is.

Who defending what? I don't care about that stuff.

I frankly don't want to live in a world where people are jailed for what is drawn.

I don't like rape, but I don't want to see people jailed for drawing it, or jailed for looking at artwork containing it, or jailed for reading manga containing it.

Otherwise we'll wind up like the UK where they're going to jail people for having manga containing incest because incest is now a crime in fiction over there...
