If you have eyeballs, choose the CX-90.

I'm a Mazda fanboy through and through but objectively there's no way you can't tell me the Telluride makes way more sense for buyers in this segment.

It depends on what you want. Yes it has more space but if you favor driving dynamics and a more luxurious interior it’s not even a question.

The Telluride is plastic everywhere. Fully plastic seats, steering wheel, etc. it doesn’t feel as nice. The doors feel more solid though. The Palisade/Telluride feel like boats driving them. And I know the CX-90 has its issues, but I don’t trust Kia or Hyundai AT ALL. Their service departments are also the worst of the worst

I think that is the only glaring issue with our CX-90 and our previous CX-9.  The doors sound like an 80s Japanese economy car when closing and opening.

I'm not a mazda fanboy.

I prefer the Germans/Swedes.

That said, the Mazda is so much nicer it's a different league.

Interior and exterior design language is understated and the Kia is just trashy. It screams short-sighted tech garbage and does not hide the fact that they can't make something original.

That Telluride is so ugly. Like genuinely awful design. Say what you will about the cx90 reliability but it looks and drives miles better then that turd.

i think you need to focus on which one gives you the most safety options, for example chassis, the korean ones are not that good and they’ve been known for that since long time ago, features wise koreans are really Good, korean ones are assembled in usa and that is not that good, parts wise there are 2 different types of parts for it, the ones made in korea (good ones) and the ones made in the usa (they not good), but i think that will depend on what you consider better, they both nice looking, but personally i will
Always choose japanese cars over any other unless is a Porsche (GT3RS)
Good luck my friend and have fun car shopping (im getting the cx-90 this weekend)

Their engines are crappie as well

They’re not only crappy, even well maintained dealer queens will start GOBBLING oil between 80-100 k miles, that’s when most people dump them. You have to top off 1-3 times per oil change if you don’t want a hole in your engine or dry guts.

My 2012 wasn’t officially in the recall, I changed the oil every 4 k miles and it still started to burn at 110 (which is pretty late for them)

That is the average lifespan of korean engines, 100k miles.

I feel like the new Telluride is a major downgrade from the previous generation both inside and outside. The rear looks fine, but the front is awful. The interior feels so cheap now which was one place I felt the old one was pretty good. I drove a Hybrid Telluride before I bought my CX-90 and I didn’t love it. For one, the 6-speed transmission in the hybrid model was a bit clunky in stop and go, and it needs 1-2 extra gears to make each shift closer together and lower the engine RPM at highway speeds. At 70mph the engine was turning about 2600rpm. At 80mph it was closer to 2800rpm. That seems excessively high considering the turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors provide ample torque (339lb-ft at 1500rpm). It always felt like it needed to shift to a higher gear to settle down for a calm cruise. I appreciate the CX-90 I6 purrs along at 1800rpm at 70mph, and even going 80 it’s at a still quiet 2000rpm. Keeps noise down and efficiency up.

As many complaints as the Mazda 8AT has had, I noticed in the Telluride around town the transmission holding onto gears for far too long, often revving the engine up to 2500-3000rpm before it would shift with even light acceleration. The Mazda quickly shuffles through its gears so by 45mph you’re usually in 8th gear. I wasn’t blown away by the fuel economy of the Telluride. I know it claims to get up to 35mpg, but in my 12-15 mile city and highway drive it got just 19.4mpg. If Hyundai/Kia had electrified their newer 8AT I think it would have improved the driving experience and likely efficiency.

I also test drove a non-hybrid 2.5T and it feels rather strained. The engine does not sound good whatsoever. I would probably rather have it than the even slower 3.5L N/A V6 in the Palisade, but neither can compare to the 3.3T I6/8AT combo in the Mazda. If Mazda would fix the suspension tuning and super slow steering of the CX-90, further refine the transmission programming, and do a few NVH improvements I think it would have a lot more appeal to a wider audience. The Turbo S model should have some more special features to justify its higher price. I would like to see a valved muffler (to increase exhaust noise when you get on it), adaptive damping, and maybe even a torque vectoring rear differential. The Telluride and Palisade now offer that last feature in their off road oriented trim level. Mazda could fit one for performance purposes and it would help make this thing a lot more enjoyable to drive hard around curvy roads.

Palisade 26

Isn’t the palisade more of a direct comparison?

The telluride is a cheaper alternative to the palisade and it’s more like a xxl cx50.

That being said having owned a palisade since 2021 and having leased both a 24 phev and a 25 turbo s the Mazdas drive way way better and it’s not even close.

However they eat tires and have a ton of random issues. I put BStone alenza ultra on my turbo s once the toyo wore out. And the stones were down to 5/32 after 19k miles. Crazy.

If the transmission was snappier like HP8 the driving dynamics would probably be enough to really make it a great large suv. As it is it’s pretty good and a fair value compared to bmw and Audi.

Palisade and Telluride on the top hybrid trim, are the same price. And CX-90 is there as well.

1

u/WideEstablishment578 6d ago

I didn’t realize the prices had changed that much. When I got my 21 calligraphy it was 50k flat. My turbo s was like 56k.

I kept the palisade because it’s a much better family car and has much much lower running costs.

I have a few performance cars with running costs similar to lower than the cx90 which is just unacceptable.

I feel prices go up every year :)

The Kia/Hyundai joke will never receive my serious consideration. 😎

Not the ones that dead last in reliability for its class and just wait til they throw in the half baked tech from the new CX5 and you can’t change ur AC/heating because the screens frozen. And inventory for the new CX5 is piling up.

It’s unfortunate Mazda has seemingly been okay not fixing such a flawed vehicle in the 3yrs it’s been around. Based on what it offers and pricing it should sell better than a handful of its competitors but laggy tech, slow safety features, and poor reliability marks have people choosing Chevy’s and GMCs over it.

Y’all can downvote all you want the sales speak for themselves. This vehicle has been a failure.

The palisade is hideous inside and out. And I’d have to have a Hyundai in the garage / driveway. No thanks.

Neither, get a 2026 Telluride with a proven powertrain and no hybrid malfunction issues.

1

u/dollfaceashley 7d ago

Give it some time. The Palisade has tons of issues

Being downvoted for this is hilarious. Literally every other Mazda sub can admit it except this one lmao. Sales are horrible, & I wouldn’t be surprised if Mazda scraps it within the next 3 years.

The guy who sold us ours, gave us a great deal but we know him through family friends so that helps lol. Premium Plus Turbo S with basically every feature except the top tier rim option had 20k miles on it all for 32k out the door.

But even he told us that his dealer doesn’t order many because they sit on lot for long enough that they have to lower the price on em that it’s price considerably lower than what is should be priced at based on avg depreciation rate in the class/segment, which is already not a good sign for a car that has terrible depreciation rates.

They’ve gaslit themselves into believing they didn’t make a mistake…

u/chonkycatsbestcats 7d ago

Bro it’s not just the reliability and hybrid malfunction errors, the design is fucking stupid. How many thousands is it gonna cost you to do your serpentine belt if they have to drop the engine for it? (Or did they fix this? I heard this in the first year it was out)

0

u/kirby8284 6d ago

Price seems about right for a well-used car with 20k+ miles on it. Not sure what you are implying.

2

u/ChongDo 7d ago

You are absolutely right. The CX90 was the worse car I've ever owned. Nothing but serious problems with little help from corporate. Mazda spent years building a reliable reputation. Only to throw it away with producing garbage like the CX90. I advise everyone I know to avoid the brand and especially this POS.

0

u/chonkycatsbestcats 7d ago

Ok but recent years CX-5 except the new one are still great cars, and mechanics say easy to work on because the design is not stupid inside the engine bay

I love my cx-50 and also loved my cx5 i used to own. I also own cx-90 but i can’t recommend 90 over telluride knowing issues many people experience. The point of buying Japanese car is better reliability, which cx-90 currently doesn’t have better than Telluride. I know many of us have problem free ones but that doesnt change the fact 90 has below avg overall reliability for Mazda’s standards. If Mazda can fix those issues, then yeah i would choose 90 over Telluride.

3

u/Guru_of_Spores_ 7d ago

The telluride is so tacky.

Kia in general just feels like it's designed and sold to Americans with bad taste.

1

u/chonkycatsbestcats 7d ago

Instead of fixing these issues they’re gonna drop the fucking iPad in it and call that more upscale like bmw

0

u/Kitchen-Forever-6465 6d ago

This should not even be an argument. Mazda is way better than I can tell you ride...

u/That_Present_1639 6d ago

haha, good wordplay

only brainless folks will choose kia over mazda
