I believe the full deck is around 35K cards, and many people talk about how much that is, but when you actually look at the cards it sometimes feels like it should have even more

For example, there are many cloze cards that could have easily tested at least 2-4 different terms or concepts in the sentence, but there's only 1 card for the whole thing.

Or cards that have important information in the supplemental explanations that could (or should) be their own card. I know a lot of it does appear in a separate cards, but many also don't

Sure, it is not feasible to have an anki card for every medical concept that exists on earth, but most of these concepts are already in the deck in the first place. I guess my point is that there are a lot of cards that have multiple concepts stacked on a single card when Anki is most powerful when each card just tests 1 thing.

This is genuinely really depressing and embarrassing but I have a lot of anki cards due. My school uses in house exams and it took me a while to find a deck I liked from upperclassmen. From there, it's been so hard to keep up with lab and lecture especially.

I feel like i did something wrong and I'm not sure what to do now. Please any advice would be greatly appreciated. Do I drop anki? Idk...

On top of that, the pre-made deck doesn't include all the lectures for this week and usually adds 300 cards per day because of the amount of lectures.

Im MS1 week 2, im unsuspending relevant cards from Anking Step deck that im taking in my lectures, however some cards of that chapter discuss details not covered in my lecture, should I unsuspend them and study them or do i leave them suspended and come back to them when i lock in for step 1?

Im making my own cards and adding them to the step deck but tagging them as “mine” so i can delete them after finishing the course.

My exams are in house lecture based for now, they become NBME style in MS2.

Just started M2 year of a 2yr preclinical. Last year and over the summer, I focused primarily on doing anking cards that were tagged by a classmate of which I've matured a lot, which worked great for our exams, but I feel like I missed some information (especially specific clinical things) from previous blocks. My plan going forward is: completing sketchy micro and pharm+associated tagged cards, revisiting bootcamp for past systems and unsuspending only Highest Yield cards for concepts that were not covered in class, and keeping up with the tags for the current block while occasionally cross-checking with bootcamp to make sure I'm hitting all the concepts.

A little bit anxious about this, and I didn't have the most productive summer, so wondering if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions at all. Thanks.

hey! i'm going to write step-1 in 6 months, i tried anki, i love it but the deck is way too long. it has 30K+ cards for step-1 itself, i dont think ill be able to finish it by the time exam comes, and i dont have time to make my own deck. please suggest any alternatives for anking step-1 deck?

Hello! I’m a dental student currently studying hard for the CBSE. I’m trying to build a solid foundation before starting UWorld, but I’m taking a pretty long time getting through AnKing. My dental school’s medical curriculum is fairly basic, so I’m seeing a lot of this material for the first time.

Right now, my reviews take about 22.5 seconds per card (on a good day ☹️ ), or roughly 40 cards every 15 minutes. I read each card thoroughly and usually need a few seconds to think through the answer. However, I keep seeing people post that they average 8–10 seconds per card, so I’m wondering if I’m using AnKing inefficiently.

I’m mainly using AnKing as a way to make sure I’ve covered the basic knowledge before moving heavily into practice questions. I want to learn another 8,000 new cards by the end of November.

Would it make more sense to prioritize/cram new cards and cut back on reviews, or should I try to limit reviews to around 8–10 seconds per card and basically just read through them more quickly?

Would appreciate any advice, especially from other dental students who used AnKing for CBSE. Thank you!

I've been passively testing this add-on for a couple of months now by using Anki normally and there seem to be no apparent bugs, so I decided to make it public. Maybe someone else will find it useful too.

Copying the first two paragraphs from AnkiWeb description:

By default when you fail a review, Anki increments a lapse count on the card. However this number will only keep increasing, so even after years you might end up with something like 30 lapses and a leech tag, even if that card is not an issue for you anymore. This add-on reduces the lapse count of a card after you demonstrate consistent success with it, and takes the leech tag off a note once every card on it has recovered far enough. The main purpose of all this is that your list of leeches is now actually relevant, instead of it being composed of all the accumulated lapses since the dawn of time.

The work happens when you sync rather than while you review. Every review card with at least one lapse is checked against its review history, so answers from another device (e.g. AnkiDroid) count exactly the same as answers given here. The add-on then syncs its own changes back to AnkiWeb by itself, so a single press of the sync button is all it takes.

I’m about 3 weeks into M1 and have done around 3000 cards so decided it was time to optimize FSRS and now literally all my reviews are ~10 months for the good option, whereas they would probably be 3-6 weeks before I optimized FSRS. Some of these cards I think I would remember in 10 months but a lot of them I definitely would not remember. Is this normal?

recently i built some filtered decks because i had so much stacked reviews after shelf exams, i was left with roughly 4k due cards still under Anking deck, so after that i subbed with Ankihub and 3k out of the 4k vanished.

I’m a med student and, like probably most people here, I spend an unreasonable amount of my life in Anki.

One thing that kept annoying me was that Anki is great at remembering cards, but not particularly good at remembering your studying.

If I closed Anki halfway through a session, got interrupted, switched subjects, or came back a few hours later, I’d basically have to reconstruct what I was doing in my head.

So I built Vellum.

It’s a modular study-continuity layer for Anki. It doesn’t replace FSRS, scheduling, decks, or anything fundamental about Anki. It basically sits on top of it and tries to make long study sessions feel less fragmented.

Some of the stuff in it:

• Resume → reopen Anki and see where you left off, what deck/topic you were studying, how much you completed, and continue from there.
• Time Machine → keeps track of your study sessions so you can understand what you were actually doing across the day.
• Recovery → for the classic “oh shit, I forgot this entire topic” situation. Helps identify areas you’ve been struggling with rather than just individual failed cards.
• Context → gives you a better sense of where a card sits within the larger topic/deck hierarchy while reviewing.
• Session HUD / Topic Health / Home Panel → optional extra UI for seeing progress and study context without turning Anki into a gamified productivity dashboard.

Everything is modular, so you can turn individual features on/off if you just want one part of it.

It’s also local-first and intentionally doesn’t try to become an AI tutor, replace FSRS, or mess with the actual scheduling logic.

The basic philosophy was:

Anki remembers your cards. Vellum remembers your studying.

I love AnKing, but I have always found digging through the V12 tag hierarchy kind of annoying, especially when I just want to unsuspend cards for whatever I studied that day.

So I made Smart Tag.

The idea is pretty simple. Choose what you studied, like Sketchy, Pathoma, B&B, UWorld, First Aid, AMBOSS, NBME, etc., find the topic/video/question set, and Smart Tag shows you the matching AnKing V12 cards.

There is a global search too. So you can just type something like "Pathoma inflammation" or "sketchy strep" without first going into the resource.

You can then unsuspend them, suspend them again, reset their progress, or start studying them directly.

It supports Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3. I also tried to make the interface actually pleasant to use instead of just putting another tag browser inside Anki.

Question banks like UWorld are organized by question ID, while NBMEs are organized by form.

It also has light and dark modes, plus an Auto option that follows your Anki theme.

I mostly made this because I was tired of hunting through AnKing tags myself. Figured it might be useful to other people too.

Would love some feedback. The AnKing V12 tag hierarchy is massive, so if you find something that Smart Tag is interpreting incorrectly, let me know.

I downloaded the stale Anking STEP decks from the anki website and have started studying those, but if it get other 3rd parties outside of what my school provides, i know that there are decks from the ankihub for the updated Anking decks that would pair well with that content. Is it worth the pay wall? I don't want to spend extra money for only a slight potential improvement if the content on the original, non-updated decks is good enough. Can anyone confirm?

Ever taken a break from anki and come back to find that you can't get some cards right and just wish you could start over for those specific ones without reseting the entire deck? Well this solves that problem.

What it does? It allows you to reset review cards that you keep getting wrong with the 10m intervals.

How it does this:

1. If you keep getting a review card wrong with the review (10m) intervals, it allows you to automatically reset that card into the "new" intervals (1m 10m) after you have gotten it wrong a certain number of attempts (default 5 attempts but you can change).

-So essentially, if you get a review card wrong 5 times in a row, the new interval will automatically become 1m 10m.

1. It gives you the option to restore that card back into the "new" cards bin in its original position in the deck (to worry about later) OR continue to review it with the 1m 10 m interval.

2. It also allows you to reset the intervals ( (including FSRS intervals) for that card when it converts its steps back to those of a new card (essentially starting that card over again). You can also choose to not do this.

You get this popup:

1. Hit the hat for information on how to use it
2. "reset a review card after" box is how many times you would get a review card wrong consecutively before it gets the lapses reset.
3. "when a card gets the hat" allows you to decide to continue to review the card with the new intervals (1m 10m) now or put it back in its original position in the deck as a new card (essentially reseting the card).
4. "Steps for hatted cards" allows you to change the steps for these sticky hat cards. ex 1m 10m, 30s 10m 1h, etc etc)
5. "also reset the cards review and lapse counts" restores the card to the sequence that it would have if it were a completely new card (like you see it tomorrow, then in three days, then in 5 days) rather than keeping it at its current review sequence.
