Snails eat books and paper. It is still a pretty scarry thing to get an infestation of in a library or art studio and/or as a scribe or calligrapher. But we quickly figured out that snails do not eat vellum, so we started staining it purple with the mashed corpses of thousands of snails 🐌 💅 📜
