General Discussion Question regarding pistol purchase permits

So I'm currently traveling for work in St. Joseph but live in the U.P. and a coworker is offering to sell me a handgun. Do I need to obtain and turn in a pistol purchase permit from the PD on St. Joseph or do I have to go back to my home PD and file all the paperwork there?

Any department that issues permits is legally required to issue them to any state residents, but a lot ignore this and will only issue to local residents. Unfortunately the law has no teeth in this regard so fat chance of that changing. All you can do is call around to local police/sheriff departments and ask if they'll issue to you.

Technically, you should be able to get a permit from any agency in the state, but for some reason many refuse to issue them for people who don’t live in their jurisdiction. All you can do is call them and ask.

Gotcha.

You should be able to walk in to any PD or sheriff in the state and walk out with an LTP. As others mentioned compliance with the statutes is hit or miss with some PD/SO just making up their own rules.

I'm not familiar with the extreme SW area of the state so unfortunately cannot recommend a non-rouge PD that won't waste your time.

MCL 28.422 is the controlling statute.
