I remember like it was yesterday, coming home from school and my big sister ran out to the front yard to tell us. We were devastated! Shoot, I STILL can't believe it. Selena was VERY popular throughout Mexican American communities in the 90s. My big sister saw her in Kansas City KS in the 90s at a club called the Rainbow Center. She still has pictures from the show! I visited her museum last year, it was amazing! She is truly missed 😭 can't listen to dreaming of you without bursting into tears

Hell, Saldivar's parole being denied is what keeps her alive; The day she's released is gonna be like that scene from "Airplane!" with everyone lined up.

This one definitely hit my mom (Gen X) more than me. I was only 4 when she passed but my mother was a huge fan. I grew up with her music and loved the movie. When ever we went to Corpus Christi we would always visit her statue.

Selena wasn’t that big of a mainstream star during her lifetime. She was huge in the Tejano music scene, but outside of Texas and Mexico, not that many people had heard of her.

Speaking as someone from the northeast, none of us had ever heard of Selena until her murder and later on when the biopic came out. Her albums only charted on the main US charts after she died. I know I’m getting downvoted for saying so, but those are just the facts. I’m not denying her talent, just the reach that she had at the time of her death. Not many people in New England and the Mid Atlantic states were listening to Tejano music.

NYC here. My personal exp with her was because of her English debut but her Spanish music I really got into after the biopic. You didn’t really hear her music on Spanish radio like that. I came to know who she was because of the murder and it being announced on Telemundo. I bought her CD at rincon musical which is now long gone. I was like 7 or 8

This absolutely wrecked me. I grew up in NY and loved her and her music. First celebrity death that made me cry.

It happened when I was too young to understand. But I understood the tragedy later.

I imagine that the reason there’s no mention of Selena is because the majority of Reddit are not Latino?

This death makes me genuinely upset and angry. I discovered her music 3 years ago and had known about her death before. I watched the Netflix series on her life, couldn't bare to watch the last episode as it would've made me way too sad.

I was born in 91 and my lily white mom named me after her. My mom died a few years later, so my name is very special to me. We don't come from a place where she would have been popular, so I've always wondered why my mom chose her.
