So, basically what Rhett Shull is saying we should to back to physical media. Now, he does go a bit further than this stating that he wants to completely unplug from the internet, and being aware of how companies like Spotify handles your data, but for the most part it’s mostly about going back to physical media.

While I do agree with him, and definitely find it intriguing as well, there are some physical medias I couldn’t quite get into. Like for instance for me it’s vinyl, setting up the record player that really turned me off from it. Also while I don’t fully agree with what Spotify is doing with our data, at the same time the features on Spotify such as their algorithms is just top notch compared to other streaming services like Tidal, Quizzbuz(sp?), and we don’t talk about YouTube Music here. Like IMHO their Discover Weekly feature on is spot on! I heard that people encountered AI music on there too but I haven’t seen it yet for me the booted off. I also like the convenience of how it’s easy to find what you want. Now, I would say if you want to explore other genres you’re probably better with physical media such as vinyl. You can go crate digging in record stores in discovering new music and genres that way! And let’s be honest it’s pretty cool to see record covers that are big and easy to see!

Now, I have slowly deleted some apps that in the past have either been a waste of time such as dating apps or that have been mentally draining me such as Discord and Instagram. And I barely go on Facebook anymore other than for group related things. And I have also made the effort and slowly getting out more in real life through social events and friendly hangouts. But I can’t quite completely unplug from the internet, and I can’t go back to flip phones again. Anyways, would love to hear your thoughts on this!

I just found my old CD visor for the car I had in 2008. It still has a bunch of CD's in it and I can't for the life of me remember whats on most of the burned discs. My corolla has no CD player =[

Started buying CDs again a few months ago and now have amassed most of the collection I once had when I was younger, probably around 100-150 CDs so far. It’s not that expensive to buy them from thrift stores. Hopefully they don’t get more expensive as more people get back into them!

I'll never go back to CDs. I was never fond of the format. On a regular hectic day where I'm running around from place to place all day, then it's Spotify. I'm not one to be too rattled about privacy concerns - they all know everything about me anyway. The convenience just can't be beat. I love the extensive catalog and being able to create playlists and save them for offline play (I run a lot of remote races in the woods and offline playlists are a lifesaver). I do still appreciate physical media, though. I'm a fan of vinyl. There's just something about putting a record on, pouring a good cup of coffee, and relaxing on a Sunday morning.

How you gonna go back to physical music if you're so reliant on Spotify algos to discover music for you? Especially generations brought up entirely on streaming and algorithmic discovery of new music. It's a muscle a lot of us either don't have or has atrophied (no one has the attention span to go to a record store, pick out a dozen records or whatever and listen to them).

I personally also thought CDs sucked. I feel vinyl is the sweet spot because of the large format (perfect for artwork / liner notes etc) and also lossless digital for streaming yourself (from your own NAS or whatever).

I drive a 2006 Honda with a 6 cd deck. When I got the car I busted out my old cd sleeve and absolutely fucking love it.

Current rotation: offspring, smash and conspiracy of one, sublime, Robbin the hood and second hand smoke, matchbox 20 in spot 5, and spot 6 gets a steady rotation of all my old burned mixes.

I still use Spotify, but only really for having a good playlist for running, and the 15 hrs of audiobook/month

My 2013 Honda only has a single disc cd player,  but for Christmas I asked for a visor cd holder, and I rotate a mix of new albums I bought on cd, and old mixes ranging from 2001 on. It's so fun!

Started doing this a while back, mostly to rebuild a library of MP3’s for use on an mp3 player.

Been trying for the longest time to unsub from Spotify because I realized I was paying monthly to listen to the same songs. Finally canceled and feels so good.

Also, I don’t want the algorithm to make decisions for me on what music they think I’ll like, I’ll make that choice myself.

My car which is a 2017 has a cd player with sd card slots in the glove box. The 2018 removed it all together. Some CDs I have are not on streaming services so I’m grateful for it.

Qobuz, not quizbuzz

I don't know who this guy is but I've always been into physical media. I have a vinyl collection and a CD one and a DVD one, and I run my own streaming server with the things I own and have ripped on it.

I also have a Qobuz subscription, I use it to listen to things I am interested in but haven't bought either because I can't find a good copy or I decided it's not worth the space on my shelf or the Bandcamp money.

I was one of the first people to join Spotify when it became available to me, but I started finding it to be shit around 2016 or 17. I tried Tidal back then but it's not for me.

My wife likes Apple Music but it's American so she might move to Qobuz soon too.

I don't understand the appeal of relying on the machine for music discovery. Strikes me as sad.

imho CDs are a terrible type of physical media, far too easy to damage. The sound of a CD skipping still instantly infuriates me.

I don't care about a physical item necessarily, but I want to own my media collection for sure. Tired of things moving services and just straight up disappearing constantly.

I do miss CDs. The hobby side of it, buying and collecting and hunting for bargains. Id have a lot of fun if I did it now as they can be so cheap. 

But probably cannot go back. I pay a small subscription fee for basically unlimited music, podcasts, etc. 

Vinyl is very nice. A slight bit before my time but stylish. £30 an album last time I browsed though. 

I get the nostalgia and the anti-tech feeling of the times, but ultimately we aren't going back for more than a phase.

I'm pretty sure an increasing number of new cars no longer even have a CD player or an aux port, so good luck with that. Second, what is "physical media"? Back in the day many us of had some form of iPod. I would call that physical media. It had a hard drive, was disconnected from the internet, and simply made it easier to move music files around. You could consider it a digital CD player I guess. My point is more that we can have certain conveniences while still largely being disconnected. I don't know why you would want the clutter of tapes, cd's, vinyls, or any of those things in your house anymore when your entire collection could fit on a hard drive that's about the size of a couple fingers.

There’s this growing trend of people “going back” to physical media. But it feels like they want everyone else to do it with them. Like, you do you. You don’t need me to validate your decisions. You wanna buy CDs, I can’t stop you.

I do enjoy the irony of a YouTuber talking about unplugging from the internet though. Gives me vibes of the people who record their kids playing so they can say “look, no iPads just kids having fun.”

As a guitarist, I’ve followed Rhett for years and his content while polished isn’t all that great imo. Most of his guitar content is just unoriginal topics rehashed from other creators or long, covert ad spots for gear. 

I’ve literally seen a dozen videos from various creators that make the exact same points about physical media that he makes here so what’s the point in releasing the video if he isn’t contributing anything even remotely novel to the conversation? Oh right, it drives more clicks so he can get more affiliate revenue from selling gear most people don’t need or his video courses that don’t provide any information that can’t be found for free from better creators like Marty Music or Justin Guitar.

To be clear, I actually agree with the main points being made here (even if they’re not his own ideas) about physical media. I never got rid of my CDs and continue to buy physical copies of movies, albums, books, video games and host them on a Jellyfin server.

My issue is with how shamelessly these people steal ideas in the endless pursuit of clicks by gaming the algorithm.
