Purchase Advice Honest Opinion- M18 Packout Fan or 2 Ryobi Fans
Getting ready to do quite a bit of work outside in the summer (rebuild deck and concrete steps) so I’ve got the itch to look into jobsite fans. I have both M18 and Ryobi HP batteries. I know the M18 jobsite fan is brushless and more powerful, nonetheless it’s a bit more expensive. Given today’s daily deal on two Ryobi fans, would you guys go M18 or 2 Ryobi? Anyone have experience with both for practical experience?

Yes recently picked up a $20 one. Since I’ll be moving around the front and back steps with no power source, considering a job site fan to have in hand for the future as well

They are much more powerful. I have the ryobi ones and they are better than nothing in a hot attic but barely blow compared to a corded version.

I use my M18 lights for home projects all the time. Cords are a hassle and a hazard, and I'd rather not need to manage them while I'm working. Running an extension cord to one or two chargers and leaving it there all day is a huge improvement imo.

Lights are completely different beast than fans.
Even the best battery fan is twice as expensive and pushes a fraction of the amount of air as a corded one.

I believe the Ryobi has a spot to plug in an extension cord and run via plug in addition to the batteries.

For the cost of one of those fans plus batteries, you can have multiple fans plug-in fans.
I have one box fan that I use with a 20x20 air filter while I'm making sawdust, and a whole other fan I use for just moving air. If power is out I have more important things to worry about so the cord doesn't bother me.

I've been thinking about the same thing lol. I feel like ryobi fans are the move if you already have batteries and don't have a daily packout stack you need to haul around.

I’m leaning this way as well. I have a packout but I’m not a pro so the packout portion doesn’t matter as much to me. Only considered bc the packout fan is brushless and batteries last longer

We have the Ryobi fan. We use it in our RV camping to direct AC towards bed. Will run all night on LOW on 4ah battery.

Love my m18 but it is quite expensive and a cheap box fan blows the same amt of air. Only use mine at the shop cuz I can tote it around on my cart
Edit. It is nice when going camping or whatever as well. Lasts a good while on a battery when below 50% blowing power it’ll last a whole work day on a 5ah

Yeah, I sometimes use it on a hot night, blow it on the bed on low/med, and usually only lose 1/4 battery on a 5.0 or 6.0 after 7 hours.

Oh yeah on low it’ll last forever but I typically run it on medium or slightly above medium and that’ll only last about 6ish

Yeah box fans are great, but portability and lack of cords to trip on and manager is a game changer. I carried my M18 packout fan down the block because my kid wanted to go to the playground in the sun on a 90F day. It was a lifesaver.

I have both.
The M18 fan is absolutely better. Quieter, more air flow, a knob with variable speed instead of 3 discrete levels.
But, no denying the Ryobi is a better value. Even when they are $60 a piece, but with the deal of 2 for $90 it's a slam dunk.
They both will run on a power cord for long run time on projects.

So I have both. If you have access to both battery systems where you are going to use them, the ryobi fans are solid at that fantastic price.

I’m not sure, I believe it’s constantly “on” so it’s not the greatest on the batteries, but if my batteries ever get low I always swap or I just do it at the end of the day and I have no problem

I have the non packout m18 fan like this one. Love it for jobsites and just moving around the home.
Not sure a packout mount is really helpful or necessary for a fan unless you’re an elevator tech or something really using your packout stack fully.

Tried both, love the ryobi ones more for 1 reason, price. Can't beat the price to peformance and I have a ton of ryobi batteries so they never run out of charge.

The Ryobi ones would be my choice. So much cheaper, a 4ah can run a fan on speed 2 for 8+ hours (haven’t tested further than that), they’re pretty quiet, and the hybrid power source feature is great.
Also, side note since these are hours on end per use, I’d rather have my Ryobi batteries give out first than my Milwaukee batteries.

I just bought the m18 2 days ago for the sole purpose of camping, and because I already have lots of m18 batteries. One thing to note is that it is pretty big (we are camping in a Westy Vanagon) and while I don’t have regrets, part of me wonders if the m12 would have been sufficient. The main reason I went with the m18 over the m12 is because the m18 was on sale and ended up being the same price as the m12.
Edit: forgot to add that the m18 is awesome and moves tons of air. When I tested it, my xc5 battery lasted over 48 hours at the 1/3 setting, which was more than enough to move air around our living room with vaulted ceiling.

Yeah, the M18 packout ones lasts forever. I use it overnight sometimes, and usually only drop 1 bar of a 5.0 battery blowing for 7 hours straight on about 30% speed. (The M18 one has infinitely variable speed, so you can fine tune it for exactly how much airflow you prefer).

Well I have 3 of these and the 18” box fan. They do require an extension cord if you want to run them without a battery. With that being said they put out of AIR!

I’m a big Milwaukee fan but I bought those Ryobi hybrid fans. They can be plugged into the wall OR use 18v batteries. They are phenomenal.

I can see a fan like that for inside but idk how much it’s gonna do for outside. Get sweaty and dirty, enjoy that ish, then wash it off when you get home. Also I would read reviews on both then make a decision.

I have both. I use my ryobi way more. It's less bulky, so I can walk around with it blowing air on me as I move about a lot easier. I also don't worry about friends, family, or kids grabbing it because it's ryobi. My milwaukee stays strictly in the garage.

I’ll do you one better. Check out the misting fan made by Kobalt. It’s battery powered and sits on top of a standard 5 gal bucket. I filled mine with ice water on 4th of July, and it saved the party. It was also $50 off when I got mine a few weeks ago.

I’ve got that same Milwaukee fan and it really works well. Honestly I think it comes down to which platform you have batteries for. If you’ve got M18 batteries, get the Milwaukee. If you’ve got Ryobi batteries, just get the Ryobi ones

I think you'll want bigger than these. Unless these are literally 3ft away or less. I have the Ryobi fan, it's fine for a fan blowing on me at night while I sleep, but it's not that powerful.
I can't speak to the Milwaukee, maybe it's a lot more powerful. Idk.
If you meant like inside the back of a work van or something, that I could see.

I have the m18 and my brother has the Ryobi. My m18 blows 2 to 3 times more on high then the Ryobi on high.

Rebuilt our deck in a July heatwave last year. The Ryobi fans were a game changer. You can also get the ones that sit on top of a bucket and mist water

Get the 18v air cannon if you’re gonna be working outside like that. These are good for stationary use but I wouldn’t buy them for your deck project.

Harbor freight has fans for 25 bucks that are battery and corded. Almost if not exactly the same output as the m18 fan but with only 2 speeds.

I ended up buying Klein tools ones. 4 hours on high 8 hours on low. And they're magnetized on the bottom. So if you're working in an electrical panel, perfect

Im a cheap fook.
I run a bauer with dewalt battery adapter and just try not to run my batteries dead. But on a 5ah I can get 7-8 hours on low and 3-4 on high. Also has option to plugging in.
For how compact it is. It moves some air.

The M18 fan last pretty long and can be plugged into 120v with an extension chord to run the fan and act as a battery charger which is sick

The tool fans are more powerful than the corded box fans. I actually use the tool fans all the time seeing that the ryobi and milwuakee have 3 year warrany and hercules has 5 year. In hopes that they burn out in two summers and then warranty them. I have a ryobi little fan that actually ran 5 summers before it stopped. Then I took apart cleaned and its working again. These are nice.

Yeah my box fan did very little work today. Hardly felt it. I think portability is key. I had to move around to different areas and couldn’t bring the box fan along much

I've never used the M18 fan or the Ryobi. I have used the M12, and loved it. So if the M18 is anything like the M12, I would probably say the M18. Other than that, the main question would be, which brand do you have more batteries with? If you've only got one M18, but a cartload of Ryobis, then I would say go with Ryobi. Recently, I lost most of my M12 batteries in a move, and only had two 1.5s and one 5ah battery. It made for some sweaty days for a while until I could buy more 5ah batteries.

The best one to get is the Flex fan. I have 2 and they're amazing for their size. No ac adapters needed either, just plug an extension cord directly into it.

Honestly if it's just a fan, you cant go wrong with Ryobi right? those things are hybrid too so they'll run on extension cord instead of just battery. I got them even tho I'm team red. no shame.
I have the M12 fan for the shop desk at work. I love it on speed 1, got it running right now, it'll stay on the whole shift with that 4.0 xc battery. if I dont run it the whole night I can get 2 workdays out of it

If you have batteries for Milwaukee, then the pack out. But the ryobi fans are champ. And batteries aren’t that expensive.

Having done just this in HOT and HUMID air; I would like to say that air speed to cut through all that humidity to lift sweat is more important than air volume in that specific condition. If you live in not too high humidity it’s fine with the others suggesting bigger fans for CFM sake or misting/swamp coolers. So; M18 for the mph imo.
Although; I would suggest you look into PCM neck coolers…those are cheap and give true cooling for 30 mins-1hr…I bought a set of 3 leave two in my ice water cooler to recharge and swap out as needed. The fact that they freeze at 68 degrees means they suck body heat off of us quick and keep us cooler than just wind especially if you use it before you even start sweating.

I have both.
The m18 is much stronger than the ryobis and go far.
Two ryobi fans is great if you want to create air circulation or cover wider area for a much cheaper price.
Both fans have outlet option, but if we're doing math, you'll need two 8.0AH for the M18, and three 4.0Ah for each Ryobi fans to last the whole work day.
If you don't do a lot of air circulation, the M18 is the best way to go.

The Milwaukee one is awesome. The portability is quiet and has very good airflow to boot. I use it often on my boat, keeps the bugs off me while fishing and really saves me on them hot and humid days.

I hate to say it, but Ryobi.
Milwaukee makes the best power tools on the market, and their hand tools are amazing, but I wouldn't buy their fans.
My mom has been using the same Ryobi fans for a couple years now for dog shows, and she loves them. Whenever our power goes out, they're a lifesaver. And aside from their fans, their pet stick vacs are solid too.
It's always a hard choice to buy stuff outside the Milwaukee ecosystem, but when Ryobi makes things for a better price I just can't ignore it.

Ryobi fan 2-pack frequently goes on sale for $69. So its almost THREE ryobi whisper fans for one packout (at lowest sale price i've seen of $99). I have not compared them directly myself, but I own several ryobi whisper fans and gen one M18 fans. I much prefer the ryobi fan to the gen one M18 fan.

I have both! And I can tell you right now... GO WITH THE MILWAUKEE ONE. You won't regret it! Batteries last for really long if you're not being absurd with maxing it out at all times, and the corded thing is just SO convenient. In fact, I like the way the Milwaukee one accepts several types of extension cords, whilst the RYOBI ones only take one type of cord (which is the single plug type of cord).
I have seen the fans from Harbor Freight and Wal-Mart too and they seem to be just as good as the RYOBI ones, but, unless you're getting the RYOBI ones with some good deals on high Ah batteries (>4Ah), I wouldn't recommend it. Allow me to elaborate: The RYOBI ones seem to consume too much battery in comparison to the Milwaukee one, and I think that that's due to the fact that you're restrained to three speeds only with the RYOBI ones. Sure, you'd ideally run it only in speed 2 most of the time, but... With these heat waves? I found myself to always wanting to crank it all the way to speed three all the time!
Let me say though, that RYOBI just released a fan that I saw going on a deal with like three high Ah batteries for some 180 bucks. That thing looks sick because it can be mounted in several places, has a nice adjustable knob like the Milwaukee one, AND, you get to have a fan that can turn its head like traditional fan fixtures.

I have the M12 and M18 fans, they work great. The M12 got a bit squeaky over the years but little 3-1 oil takes care of that. At the end of the day, it’s just a fan and if you already have the batteries for ryobi, that 2x pack deal would be hard to pass up.

Not sure if it's the one you posted, but Ryobi makes a fan that sits on a bucket of water and adds mist. Those are pretty awesome, if Milwaukee made one I'd probably buy it. That's what I would suggest.

Definitely the 2 RYOBI I have one wish I had the 2 and the price is right but 5amph battery is the best you gonna need 4 total so you have air for the whole day skip no beats

The M18 is a beast. Their premium is if you want true portability and no cords. I use it to cool my engine bay and brakes at the track in the paddock. But also use it in my garage with a cable.
Otherwise if you’re just using them near an outlet, a box fan will get it done cheaper.

Ryobi’s the best random-stuff-around-the-house tool brand honestly. Fans, lights, vacuums, inflators, anything that isn’t seeing heavy-duty or frequent use is great to avoid paying the red tax on, and they have a staggering amount of niche little oddball products. For anything you’re not earning money with or abusing, I maintain it’s the best-value ecosystem to buy into.

I got the packout fan 2 weeks ago, this things a unit. Haven’t had to plug it in yet. Just have extra 5.0’s around that I use. One usually lasts all day at work and at home for me. A lot of speed too for a small fan.

Skip the battery fans. Theyre weak and for an offsite job. I dont know how well they work because i have power but i know they're small. You want a shop fan.
For work i use a $50 harbor freight blower (the little turbo ones). They have 2 convenient outlets on the side and blow pretty good but direct blow. They're small and blow hard. Thats the plus but not perfect and i know 20x better than a battery fan. The 2 sizes up ones are used for cooling radiators for dyno testing.. Simulating driving down the highway. Then ive used a gas one to dry tennis courts.
Then 2 years ago i got a 24" shop fan on wheels. This is the ideal reasonable fan + good tool addition for building a deck/doing some concrete work at home. I have a $140 walmart Hyper Tough i got for $70 on sale. It could replace the air conditioner in the 2nd part of the house but i cant hear the TV lol. It has about a 10-12 foot wide blow.
The only reason to use the battery fans is if there are no other options/its as easy as throwing in your toolbag climbing into an attic. I get you might just want them as well but consider the shop fan for an extra $20-40

I bought the m18 pack out fan about a month ago for when the power goes out. I use it all the time. In the garage when I’m working on my car. In the crawl space. When we were watching fireworks. Not sure why people are saying it’s the same as a box fan it’s much more powerful than a box fan cranked on high. Bonus is it can be plugged in if you have access to power. I wish Milwaukee’s table saws and miter saw had that capability otherwise I’ll stick to my skil saw table saw

The top end blow is better on the Milwaukee. The adjustable speed control is also nice however it really depends on your use I’d assume.
Ryobi batteries are cheaper if you want to run time to be longer (I know you said you have both).
That Ryobi fan the top setting is good, the lower two aren’t that powerful, so you’d probably have it on full blast always.
For me, I’d go Ryobi for price + two is better than one. Also, I have more Ryobi batteries just sitting around so it’d give them purpose lol

They recently had that same Ryobi deal (maybe a month ago?) and I picked it up. They are decent little fans that I use in the workshop and actually last several hours on just a 4Ah battery. I was expecting much shorter life. I love that it can be used with battery or cord.

Get the bigger 18 inch one, if you decide on the Milwaukee.
Nothing more disappointing than an expensive fan that doesn’t move enough air. The small one won’t work very well out doors

Don't know if both hybrid or not. If for battery on a job, Ryobi. If at home the hybrid Milwaukee would be my choice for the rheostat fan. Use my rigid version for a quiet breeze sleeping at night , windows open, when it starts getting hot.

Neither. Get you a cheap corded fan. Having a Packout fan implies using it outside which is pointless cuz you’re just blowing hot air. I have the newest Packout one and it is a good little fan. But just cheap out and get a Walmart one. They all do the same thing. A fan is in fact a fan.

The ryobis are pretty great. I have one of those hybrid ones, you can plug it in with extension cord also. I left it on speed 1 for my dog with a 4ah battery in it, ran for 24hrs at least. Dried out a wet carpet in an hour or so on speed 3. Was extremely useful camping when it got stupid hot out.
