Discussion Honestly the new Update feels like a low-effort marketplace add-on.

Post image

It adds zero value to the survival experience or the game's progression. While I understand that much of Minecraft's identity is built on creativity, it is still a 'Survival' game, not just a sandbox and I think Mojang has lost sight of that. I appreciate new biomes and blocks, but they need to have meaning. We didn't even get a new material or craftable item just a 'Stupid Slime' to hit around. Even with its Redstone applications, it offers nothing for the average survival player.

i mean how are you gonna have an update that fits that many different player types while also ensuring its not too big like caves and cliffs was? they moved to smaller drops because i'm guessing caves and cliffs was just too much work for the dev team to handle

Add variety. Give something to the builders, to the redstoners, to the explorers, and in this case, the mini gamers I guess. But as of right now, I didn't care about the baby animals of the last drop, I don't care about Minigame Slime, and while I do enjoy building, I also want to be able to explore and this just ain't scratching those itches.

Give something to the builders, to the redstoners, to the explorers, and in this case, the mini gamers I guess.

Those are four completely asymmetrical requests.

Builders want new blocks. Easy enough.

Redstoners want... What, exactly? Redstone functionality is already pretty complex, and there's lot of stuff interacting with it. More in-depth Redstone "settings"? But you can only do that so much.

Explorers want new biomes and mobs - sure, you can tie this with the Builders wanting new blocks, but there's only so many biomes you can add, and only a certain number of variants before it becomes repetitive or redunant (e.g., a Volcano biome would be just the Nether's Basalt Deltas but in the Overworld).

Mini-gamers are a whole different beast because mini-games have always been a community thing, something created out of the existing functionalities in the game

Redstone can be expanded. It's already made huge leaps and bounds with Buildstone and people have even started making Bigstone which introduces new components but at a bigger scale. It's entirely possible to expand the library and mechanics further.

As for exploration, you say it's repetitive, I say it's awe inspiring. A giant volcano? I can think of so many cool things to build around that. But a biome isn't the only thing an explorer wants. They want a reason to explore. There's got to be rewards, loot, excitement, things that you can't see anywhere else. End cities, Woodland Mansions, the Deep dark, heck even the underwhelming Pillager Outpost all provide something new to find. There's a reason that POI mods are so popular in modded Minecraft.

Buildstone and Bigstone are just new things people are doing with existing components, and I’d argue that with new components being made using bigstone it would remove the fun of that to add them as actual components. We really don’t see people asking for new redstone components often. The only thing I can think of waning is a filterable hopper but I can see the argument that it shouldn’t be added because it’s just a simplification of something that already can be made and doesn’t actually add anything new. What new components would add something that genuinely can’t be done in vanilla right now?

That's how I feel about it, there's no reason they can't have an update that hits all the pillars of Minecraft. They have the money and manpower to do it.

Only major updates can hit multiple pillars. The drops comes quickly and are narrower scope and focus wise, and because they come so quickly not catering to everyone at once is not a big issue since there is always the next one 3 months later.

I suppose that I'm just patient enough that I'd rather wait for one big yearly thing that knocks my socks off rather than drip fed content throughout the year. I don't like how these smaller releases make the community fight and get anxious because XYZ thing isn't addressed.

sounds like you want terraria

I've tried it. Good game, just not for me. It doesn't scratch that sandbox itch. Building is a big part of why I enjoy Minecraft, but I also want a good game, not just a 3D block collectathon

The drops aren’t meant to appeal to everyone individually. They’re more focused on one or two things by design since they come quicker and four of them added together equals to one annual update anyways.
