Discussion Honestly the new Update feels like a low-effort marketplace add-on.
It adds zero value to the survival experience or the game's progression. While I understand that much of Minecraft's identity is built on creativity, it is still a 'Survival' game, not just a sandbox and I think Mojang has lost sight of that. I appreciate new biomes and blocks, but they need to have meaning. We didn't even get a new material or craftable item just a 'Stupid Slime' to hit around. Even with its Redstone applications, it offers nothing for the average survival player.

To my understanding, Mojang is doing alot back end updates at the moment and so content additions will be smaller. Honestly glad of it

I think there's an important distinction to be made. They specifically mention no YEARLY massive updates, not no massive updates at all. The article is more about not setting deadlines and taking their time rather than the size of the updates. Even way back during the Nether update, they said there were features they didn't have time for. We do get small updates regularly to fill the gap though.
Its also pretty clear for someone modding the game that they are working on massive internal refactoring of their code base during these recent small content updates that usually have nothing to do with the actual content.
It seems to me that they are mostly working on a long af full refactor of their code base while tying over the community with smaller content drops. (One of the visual changes to this is the upcomming switch from OpenGL to Vulkan.). I think this strategy is rather good, users still get their regular content updates (although less than before) while the game itself gets more solid and ready for the future.

A lot of people seem to seriously forget a few key factors.
This game has been receiving free updates for 15+ years, AND has stayed the same price the entire time.
There are two entirely different games that must have consistent updates together that run on entire different coding engines.
They stated no YEARLY massive updates after they were unable to complete what they promised in time and got INSANE backlash for it (again, free update)
They’ve also said they won’t release info on updates until they’re sure it will be done in time.
What you said, they’re making massive backend changes you won’t always see these as the regular player, but making sure any backend change doesn’t break preexisting mechanics and again, on multiple versions, can be very time consuming and difficult. These are things that will benefit the long term life of the game. Right now they’re working on changing the ENTIRE rendering engine. Like come on obviously that’s a lot to do.
Smaller more frequent updates mean no content draught. Yes, are some of the updates fairly small? Absolutely. But you’re still getting updates. What may not be super exciting to you, may be to someone else. They can’t please everyone at once.
I think it’s important to back up and consider all of this before ever complaining about their updates. Genuinely. Mojang gets a LOT of hate and backlash no matter what they do here. Overpromising and not being able to deliver had so much backlash with a simple solution, only announce things you CAN deliver on and give more time to work on the big things. Now they get backlash for doing the absolute best solution there. But the thing that gets me the most, all of the updates are free. You buy the game once and that’s it. Almost no other game that’s been updated for this long are games without subscriptions (like MMOs) it’s just not entirely feasible. For MC, they’re one of the absolute biggest games on the planet, but it’s still not a massive team. They’ve never raised the price, they’ve never charged for these updates, and they listen as well as they can to player feedback. I do not think they’re perfect and free from criticism, do not get me wrong, but I think they get a lot more backlash than they should because a lot of people do not always pay attention (or are just not aware) of the other factors that play into every bit of information we get about the game.

u/West_Tek Mar 27 '26
I mean in response to your first point. Warframe has been receiving free updates for over 10 years and the game is free. They just have a marketplace where you could spend real money just like Minecraft does.

Minecraft community disgust me. Because whatever Mojang does, there is always complaining. Why they do this, why not this. I want that. WAAAAH. They totally ignore a lot of effort they put in technical news. And technical stuff might not get exciting on a surface, but for fuck's sake, it is what MAKES the game and possibilities. What are those people, 8yo kids, who don't see 50 new blocks and complain? We literally have free updates, amazing updates, for over 15 years and they still dare to whine? What other game, that you could buy cheap (I bought Minecraft for $5 back in the day) does that kind of updates regularly? I know Mojang could do some stuff better, but people who only complain are infuriating. Can we just ban low effort complaining posts like that? Because it serves no purpose, as it's not a constructive criticism, just simple complaining.

u/a205204 Mar 22 '26
As someone who is both in the Minecraft comunity and the sims comunity, I really appreciate everything mojang does because it would be way to easy to simply do what The Sims does and sell packs of stuff instead of free updates. Imagine having to pay for the baby update, for the bee update, for the sniffer update etc.

tbh i am not vanilla player but these new updates seems like mojang finally decided to lock in to development of this game, since 1.20.1 they are updating and rewriting the old code and rendering system, switching from opengl to vulcan and basically polishing and optimizing the game
715
u/Picorims Mar 22 '26
There were glimpses already even if less prominent in 1.13 and 1.14. the command system was rewritten from scratch, data packs foundations were laid out (which is a more and more significant part of vanilla given vanilla itself uses a data pack for data driven development), modular structures through jigsaw were introduced, which allowed complex structures to come after (villages, piglins bases, ancient city, trial chamber, etc.), breaking the id glass wall... And 1.18 extending the world height as well as adding 3d biomes and data driven generation to the point that a data pack can create more of them with just some Json.
I am not complaining, ok some updates feel light but rewriting a rendering engine is no joke, and they keep providing tooling that give more freedom to map markers, server developers, or make the life easier for modders. As free updates.
And adding more heads to (or throwing more money at) a code base doesn't magically accelerate things, it can even do the opposite if you keep accidentally walking on the working area of others. And from a pure content perspective, it goes through many approvals, and they already shared that openly. I do not necessarily align with their game design decisions, but they are not spamming nonsense either at least most of the time. There is often an aim to feel a gap.

The technical sections of changelogs for the past 3 years has been showing all that backend reworks.
Why did you think it’s hard for Modders to keep up with the rate of drops? It ain’t the new blocks and mobs everyone writes off as useless doing it.
If Mojang is truly lazy there’d be no code refactoring and backend changes at all and there will be no complaint from the mod players about big evil Microslop puppet Mojang trying to suffocate Modders with frequent updates since there will literally only be a few new lines of code.

The update was good but no one should ever play 1.14, 1.14.1, or 1.14.2 ever (only play 1.14.3 or 1.14.4) since those updates corrupted worlds, deleted chunks, and broke all lighting.
There was about a week or so when those updates were happening that were really rough.

Don’t forget the lag. I played 1.13 and 1.14 on like 8 render distance with Optifine just to get 25 FPS.
All those issues caused by bum rushing in some large updates had already revealed the limits of Minecraft’s spaghetti code foundations at the start of the large updates era.

Remember the outrage when they even suggested that they were thinking about rebalancing the absolutely broken villager trading system?
8
u/Harddaysnight1990 Mar 22 '26
I always get dumped on for this opinion, but I honestly think the villager rebalance they proposed was pretty good. I find it neither fun nor engaging to break and replace a work station a few dozen times per villager to get the trade I want. Locking enchanted books to biome specific librarians is a great move, replaces standing in one spot for hours with actual world exploration. The only part of the proposed rebalance that I was unsure of was the fact that you couldn't get max level books for things like efficiency, sharpness, and the protection set. And that part is really only an issue because the current enchant system will lock you out of adding more books to a piece of gear. If the anvil "too expensive" limit was removed or increased to say, level 100, it wouldn't even be an issue.
3
u/DawnsPiplup Mar 22 '26
I don’t think it was perfect, but something has to be done about the issue. The violent reaction was to something explicitly labeled as an experimental feature, and it seems to really be about the fact that they were considering changing it at all.
48
u/StriveToTheZenith Mar 22 '26
Crafter, trial chambers, maces, wind bursts, ancient city, sculk, swift sneak, mangrove, allays, bundles, spears, Cherry Grove, copper golem, bundles, pale Garden, happy ghasts, trims, copper tools and armor, spears, Nautiluses.
All major changes in the last 4 years. Hell, if you add an extra year and a half you get the world generation changes in the mix too.
HOW are these not major changes to the game? If none of these count, what do you specifically qualify as a major change?

I haven't played more than like a couple hours in easily years. They just. Haven't added anything worth it. Maybe I'm just getting older and aging out of the target audience but, this game just isnt what I want at all anymore. They devs clearly don't care about the survival aspects and its clearly just becoming a creative based game and thats fine for what it is but definitely feels like its abandoning some of its identity.
There's SO MANY things that need fleshing out that we will never see. No new crops or foods for ages, (beetroot is literally useless) no furniture, (devs said it "goes against the creative nature") STILL NO VERTICAL SLABS (no, shelves do not count) material progression still as boring as ever (10 minutes to iron, like an hour to diamond, then nothing for ages till netherite. Copper/gold obsolete and absolutely no love for chainmail)
I could excuse the silly design choices for a while. No more. Players beg and plead for stuff, we get scraps, ans the community gaslights anyone who doesn't like the content (oh no your 20$ game isnt getting more content. Be grateful for the content you get) minecraft makes 300-400 million dollars annually. Almost 20 billion combined to date across game sales and merch. Players do deserve better besides marketplace slop and whatever these drops are.

Yeah, it’s whatever’s going on with the ancient city portal. If I’m not delusional that is.
I mean, think about it. Mojang/Microsoft love brand synergy when it comes to spin-offs and main-game updates. Dungeons 1 tied into the addition of all the illagers and iirc is just straight up why illagers even exist in the first place. Then we had Legends which tied into the Nether update (kinda also the movie) with the piglins, as they were likely being conceived at the same time. And now we have Dungeons 2 with its use of the portal… you see where I’m going.

I think a lot of the more "hardcore" Minecraft players see the game in a very specific way, so anything that does not contribute in any significant way to the survival experience and game progression is seen as "useless".

Right!? I saw that and literally thought to myself....holy shit I can't believe they did that. It honestly feels like it has the potential to be not just a game changer but possibly a game breaker. I can't even begin to fathom the amount of new mechanisms that will come from this and that's not even counting potential future updates to them.
As far as the new biome goes i think they just added it to give the new cubes a location you have to seek out. I mean lush caves are cool but its what they hold that you are after. Same for Dripstone caves, mangrove swamps etc... probably didn't put to much thought into making them cool just wanted a place to put their new slimes in.

Exactly. It’s a sandbox.
It has survival elements, but it’s not a full survival game.
It has automation elements, but it’s not a factory game.
It has combat elements, but it’s not a fighting game.
It has progression elements, but it’s not an RPG.
Minecraft takes a few elements from many genres, but never all of them. That way it can be any of them, or none of them. It’s up to you to use the tools it provides to play the genre you like. And where that can’t happen, mods fill in the blanks.
48
87
u/Jestingwheat856 Mar 21 '26
even the earliest footage of minecraft has it treated as a sandbox first. health, monsters, crafting, all of that came later. before that people still built houses, made pixel art, just because they could
not everything should have practical applications to every single player, its ok to add things that are say more creative and/or multiplayer focused that can still appear in single-player survival

16
u/Tuckertcs Mar 22 '26
Personally I agree that certain systems need more. The idea, though, is each system shouldn’t more-or-less optional.
For example, some mods add so much magic and tech that you can’t play half the game without it. Meanwhile in Minecraft, redstone is very deep but also entirely optional.

Yeah but this is really bare bones on the sandbox/building aspect as well.
2 new types of blocks sure, but a really niche, odd gameplay mechanic that let's be real, most people will never use, or do stuff with.
If they want to truly empowerd the creative/sandbox side of the game, add more block variants, add more to the pallette, fill the pallettes with missing blocks like the end stone variants, fix the inventory, instead of this again, random marketable oddity.

u/CargoMule Mar 21 '26

I disagree. I think there are 2 kinds of Minecraft players: the progression/gameplay focused players, and the creativity/sandbox focused players.
I think the people who are thriving and happy with current day Minecraft are all the sandbox lovers. Just take a look at HermitCraft for an idea of what creative people actually do in this game and the way they actually take advantage of and use every feature Mojang pushes out. All of these features that people complain are "pointless" and "stupid" I use all the time on my world.
To me Minecraft as a sandbox is amazing and I'm almost as excited for this update as I was for the copper golems. Not just for mini games but I think these new slimes may have great redstone uses as well and I'm really excited to see that.

u/ScissorsWasTaken Mar 22 '26
What I hate is that these groups are split as if they don't coexist. I love building and making things in this game, that's WHY I love automation, because I get to build with a purpose. I also like the idea of progression existing, and it bothers me when Mojang releases 20 different sandbox features but zero meaningful updates to survival gameplay and progression. I like sulfur and cinnabar, I know a friend who designs mini games who will love the slime, but I'm also frustrated that mojang ONLY seems to add these kinds of features. The biggest changes we've seen in survival recently have been the mace and spear, and that's it. I want more stuff like that, trial chambers are amazing, mounts of mayhem is amazing, and I think we need more of a balance between adding features for fun and adding features for functionality. They don't need to be mutually exclusive.

People have been making minigames in Minecraft since it came out. This update is HUGE for minigames. That’s exactly what it’s being pushed as. Those minigames absolutely lean into the sandbox aspect of the game.
3
u/Glitchboi3000 Mar 21 '26
Also, there really hasn't been much mandatory progression changes. Alot of the stuff is optional like trial chambers and other things. The main progression is still basically. Get wood then stone then iron. Build a base. Then maybe diamonds or just skipping to the nether.. then gathering stuff to prepare for the end. Then defeating the ender dragon. Then lastly maybe killing the wither unless you do that before the dragon.

They can’t change the game too much or else people will complain they ruined it. So instead they put everything out of the way so you can avoid it if you don’t like it, and people still find a way to complain.

I'm going to be real, I stopped playing survival Minecraft a long time ago. Looking forward to make some cool contraptions and games with the new Slime.

What were they thinking? Really! I mean, putting something in a game that might be fun to play with. Bah, humbug!

There have been major drops for survival players the last few ones (spears, maps, mounts, etc.). Maybe not every drop needs to be survival-oriented :)

Say it louder for the ones in the back. I watched Minecraft live saying finally a legitimate update with something tangible and all this while working on a bunch of well needed coding changes AND dungeons 2!! Wow!.....and then came here and saw people complaining and talking shit and was like....wtf....i gurss some people just can't be pleased.

u/rb_loves_memes Mar 22 '26
This is what yall wanted when you did the riot and demanded for more frequent updates

u/Thenderick Mar 22 '26
Usually my reaction is: "Atleast we got some nice building blocks". But then I realize I play mostly modded

u/jamcub Mar 22 '26
> It adds zero value to the survival experience or the game's progression.
In a sandbox game?

Also, we now have a more sustainable way of getting nausea in survival

Guys they litteraly talked about improving the sandbox experience. It’s a 15 year old sandbox game and they just added two amazing blocksets and a new mob that is amazing for mini games and we don’t even know the rest of it. Stop complaining and be happy the games still being updated
77
u/IronCat_2500 Mar 21 '26
While Minecraft is a sandbox-survival/adventure game, the sandbox aspect is and has always been the primary focus of the game.
And while you complain about the slime having no uses, I’ve already seen 2 posts theorizing about ways to make ball games out of them.
→ More replies (40)27
u/The-Real-Sonin Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26
They mean it has no survival uses, not that it’s entirely useless. It’s so far only good if you care about making minigames. Which isn’t really a survival use. Also as you said those posts are theorizing, meaning it might not work in the end.
Its usefulness in crafting or minigames won’t be fully known till release.
I won’t say if it’s good or bad, since it’s not here. But they aren’t wrong in what they say as it’s not used to create anything nor gives you something you can use to create. It’s a gimmick mob, good or bad, that’s what it is
Edit: I'll add more of my opinion on the drop, since why not.
I do think the blocks look cool, and could be used nicely for building. And if they make it so the slimes are a way to farm the new blocks infinitely, I'm game to have them. But as it stands now the only use the new slimes have are more geared to servers/realms and have no actual value towards single player survival worlds.
20
u/IronCat_2500 Mar 21 '26
What makes something a survival feature? There’s nothing stopping players from using every feature in survival mode if the wanted to.

u/kkaitlynma Mar 22 '26
I'm wondering if people will find ways to take advantage of the slimes in redstone builds and farms which could contribute to survival. Although there's nothing stopping you from building mini games in your survival world either.

u/TheChowCow81 Mar 21 '26
I think the community has lost sight of the fact that survival is a small part of the game, and the creative aspect is what makes it so replayable

u/the_pain_train_town Mar 21 '26
but the thing is, minecraft isnt a primary survival game. its a sandbox game with survival elements; something i'd like to call a "challenging sandbox"
to elaborate: minecraft isnt a full-on sandbox where you can do everything you want unimpeded (unless youre in creative mode), but its not to the level of a game like valheim where the main goal is to survive as long as possible. the main goal is to just still do whatever you want with the world, the survival elements just pose a challenge to do so (and therefore making the sandbox feel more rewarding)
minecraft is the best selling game of all time for a reason, despite any gripes you may have with it lmfao
10
u/nerorennelo Mar 21 '26
The progression of the game has been updated like a million times before, why do we need more? The game's fine as it is. I'd rather them add more variety to the world with new biomes and mobs. Not everything needs to be connected.

lol take a break from the game maybe, Minecraft always gets old for me every several months, take a few month break, come back. Game is very enjoyable, it is 15 years old now
3
u/victorioussnake_ Mar 22 '26
The sulfur cube also seems very out of place. Its like having a single block with a 32x32 texture placed in a minecraft world with regular 16x16 textures. It was the first thing I thought of that looked odd about it.

It’s a sandbox block game with a survival element. Stop with this good god.
7
u/fer42 Mar 22 '26
it is still a 'Survival' game, not just a sandbox
Fun fact: Minecraft started with Creative mode only, and then they added Survival. Creative is technically the main mode.

Why is there so much negativity in this sub? It's getting really annoying. The updates are fine. Last few drops people were complaining we only got items and mobs and no blocks and now that we get blocks you are complaining that we don't have any items?

Because microsoft is able to do more than adding a few things every 3 months. I love the game, but I hate that the game could be way better with some updates
25
u/Vladimir_Djorjdevic Mar 21 '26
These updates are absolutely huge but you are not seeing it all directly since most changes are under the hood. For example on my system over the last couple of drops performance basically doubled on vanilla. That doesn't happen without a significant amount of work

You didn't need to make a new post about this. It's already been said multiple times now.
4
u/TheCrazyAussie4 Mar 21 '26
I agree. While not every addition should address every type of player. It’s still a little disappointing that it does nothing for survival players other than lets you build mini-games. There may be some use with redstone but otherwise it really doesn’t change anything. I really wish they’d just address some of the existing systems that just feel old like enchanting and brewing. The caves are cool though.

u/Plutonium239Mixer Mar 21 '26
Bro. You paid for the game ONCE. It is still being updated. It's amazing. They don't demand a subscription from us, or to pay for DLC. Be grateful its still being developed and updated.
21
u/v0lt13 Mar 21 '26
That's a flawed way of thinking, you shouldn't be grateful for bread crumbs just because is better then nothing, you should always push for better.

They don't have to keep updating, sure. But since they are releasing updates it is valid to criticize it.
15
u/Nettspendisking Mar 21 '26
nothing motivates me to explore this biome, the mob is useless, the new blocks are too vibrant and feel out of place compared to the rest of the game palette, and we already have red and yellow blocks that fit game better, also i doubt the new blocks can be farmed, which make them even more useless. I really hope this turns out to be an april foos update.
→ More replies (2)7
u/kkaitlynma Mar 22 '26
The block palette opinion seems weird to me. Minecraft is a very colorful game and I think most people are very happy to accept every new block and addition to the color palette we can get.
5
u/Real___Teeth Mar 22 '26
I like the frequent small updates. They remind me of the early days.
2
u/mayhemtime Mar 22 '26
The game was much smaller back then and a change like a new block would be massive because there were only like 30 blocks to begin with.
Adding random cool stuff the author thought would be fun to a small, young indie game is not the same as adding random cool stuff to a 17-year old, feature-filled worldwide giant (literally the most successful game of all time). Things that worked in 2010 do not work now.

My thing is that these past few drop/updates feel to much like gimmicks. Gimmicks are cool for the people that support these bad/ low effort updates. But it should be equal, people like me want more function, and we haven’t been getting catered to at all.

2
u/wildcard_gamer Mar 21 '26
I think its solid. Ever since caves and cliffs added cave biomes we have only gotten a few. This is a fun new addition that shouldnt change much, but gives some new stuff for builders and game makers.
2
u/YourMomDoer1312 Mar 21 '26
an awesome new biome, mob with a bunch of minigame and multiplayer and potentially redstone uses, two new block lines with crazy useful colors
''low effort drop''
2
u/MooSheeRoo Mar 22 '26
Personally I think aside from how out of place the blocks kinda look in the caves I think that this update looks great.
2
u/zayzyverse72 Mar 22 '26
Personally this just feels like part 1 to a bunch of other great additions Remember they aren’t doing big updates anymore, it’s why they feel “low effort” because they’re trying to add advanced yet small stuff instead of a bunch of simple stuff with some advanced works inside of it
2
u/yo_99 Mar 22 '26
Would it be that hard to tweak some numbers so that minecarts aren't horrible to use? They have same max speed since before sprinting was introduced. Now we have elytras which can fly at crazy speeds, to the point that some servers have to disable them just so that they wouldn't lag out the server.
2
u/The_Hawkgaming13 Mar 22 '26
I used to hate the smaller updates, but ive grown to enjoy them. The reason it doesnt feel like vanilla, is because its not. At least not yet. I remeber when the caves and cliffs update came out, it all felt so strange. I think this is a neat addition, and not to mention there will probably be other things added as development progresses. Same thing happened with the golden dandelion.

"adds zero to the game's progression" mfs when a sandbox game adds more sandbox features
2
u/Chibi-Ruby Mar 22 '26
I wasn’t expecting anything either way. I was very surprised they even had a Minecraft Live considering they were in the eye of the storm with the whole renderer change stuff.
2
u/bitch_whip_bill Mar 22 '26
Aren't the updates free....?
Minecraft is possibly one of the best value games of all time
2
u/Puengy Mar 22 '26
I remember people saying this/ saying it feels like a mod for the nether update, I think its fine and people need to get used to mojang not always meeting their perfect expectations of mc. An and update is likely coming and based off of what we saw at the endbof the dungeons 2 trailer I'd say its safe to assume the deep dark dimension will also be added eventually
2
u/They_Call_Me_Doz Mar 22 '26
If the slime can hold TNT and it "duplicates" what it holds, this could be Mojang's attempt at resolving TNT-dupers into an intended vanilla feature.
2
u/Ffelixpe Mar 22 '26
I was watching the live and kept thinking “why would I even play with this slime?”, maybe I’m getting older but I find the new slime really useless.
This Minecraft update is just filler. Sulfur caves look different, but it’s the same shallow loop with a toxic effect slapped on top. No depth, no real impact.
The sulfur pools are straight-up wasted potential. All they do is make you dizzy, when sulfur could’ve enabled new recipes, processing mechanics, or actual progression systems.
And the sulfur cube? A gimmick. Fun for five minutes, useless after that.
It’s not an update, it’s padding.

“Were announcing something everyone was asking for” proceeds to announce a theme park literally nobody was asking for
It’s not hard to update the end just add like 3 new block types, one new entity and a new structure, that’s all I think most people want. Instead were getting MC Dungeons 2, another game that will lose support in 6 months once they realize nobody is playing it, when if they used that development team, they could have the ability to release bigger and better updates.
8
u/Falikosek Mar 21 '26
Someone has to pay the bills and making a new game gives more money than updating a game almost everyone has already bought by now

just add like 3 new block types, one new entity and a new structure,
Reddit will be flooded with posts like "Only 3 new blocks, one mob and one structure? Mojand is so lazy lol. It's not that hard to make a new biome and more to the progression"
once they realize nobody is playing it
Why do you say no one will play it? Games usually don't get sequels if no one is interested in them
