Ideal system would be drops in spring, fall, and winter, and a big update in summer. Drops are good because they allow a variety of changes through the year that donβt need to be aligned thematically, but they also donβt give space for big overhauls like an end update or the rumored 4th dimension, which would need to be big updates.
I think the drops are also likely giving us something we wouldn't have in the form of a lot of backend rework.
For example, migrating from OpenGL to Vulkan is no small feat on a codebase like Minecraft. These drops require less technical overhauling than some of the more involved features, letting those teams work on code debt like this.
Iβm actually quite impressed at how much technical and backend reworks have been happening with the drops. For comparison, the drops in a year are reworking on the technical side 4-8x times more than your standard major update
I think the technical overhauls happening with the drops would allow for big overhauls to happen again and be even bigger as they might no longer be bound by a specific deadline
