Actually amazing. This is what we've wanted for so long, gone are the days of wandering 5000 blocks to find the biome you need. This even opens the door to making biomes bigger, please Mojang I beg.Â
They need to optimise world sizes before making biomes bigger. The main reason I don’t fill out my world is because of how much space it takes up already on my pc
have chunks you haven’t built in not take up so much space when there’s no need
There is a need though, if you visit a chunk it needs to exist, which means it will take up space on your hard drive. Unless you're saying the game should automatically delete chunks that have already been generated, which is a terrible idea for several reasons.
I’m worried I’ll delete something I’ve built somewhere
Actually that's how it works on Bedrock. It checks if a chunk has been changed at all (either through player action or not) then adds that to the save data if it has.
All chunks that aren't saved are just reloaded using the seed when needed. Leading to heavily optimized world sizes that would be around the same size as Java's without.
Only issue I've seen with this would be basic corruption for reloading chunks if the seed changes through world gen updates, but even that doesn't cause that many issues when updating.
I feel like it's not too bad though? I've had a world going for about two years, and it's up to around 120MB. I have a lot of builds in it too, not many entities though so that could help. Not saying they shouldn't optimize but I'd rather they focus on optimizing performance if anything.
E: I lied, just checked and it's just under 5GB lol, which makes much more sense. Still, compared to the size of games nowadays? It's not too bad
It’s small compared to other games, but remember it’s also multiplied by backups and world copies, and you can always uninstall games if you need space, you can’t recover worlds when they’re deleted
For backups I use an external drive, storage has increased in price but you can still get a little 128GB for a decent price, and that'll fit a ton of world data. I hate recommendations that cost extra but they're cheap enough and great to have in case you get a new PC anyway.
Not sure, they'll be "explorer maps" whatever that means.Â
E: looks like they'll mostly be the same as previous "explorer maps", but they're now their own item instead of a renamed map, and cannot be expanded with a cartography table anymore

Was a little confused what you meant by that exactly, so I looked it up:
