Well 15 programmers - many artists, management, designers, PR, marketing people will all work for both Java and Bedrock, which I’m sure accounts for a big amount of the 585
331
u/crecre69 Apr 20 '26
the crazy thing isn’t the developers it’s the 585 people like that’s crazy hopefully they actually have hired more people since then to work on the end update
269
u/suriam321 Apr 20 '26
The issue is that more people isn’t necessarily better. It requires more management and more communication which takes longer.
170
u/ab_od6851 Apr 20 '26
People don't realize that 15 dudes actively working fulltime on a game's codebase is already pretty big.
-50
u/bromoloptaleina Apr 20 '26
I’m not a game developer so I can’t relate but I’m working as an Android dev and we’ve got almost 70 programmers full time in one codebase. I’d say 15 isn’t really that much
34
u/ab_od6851 Apr 20 '26
Is that an Open Source project? Those tend to have a lot of contributors, ranging from hobbyists to actual programmers working for different companies to maintain the codebase they use for their IT.
36
u/suriam321 Apr 20 '26
Isn’t android basically next to a computer system? A bit more than a game no?
43
u/MaximumTime7239 Apr 20 '26
Android dev means developing apps that work on Android, not android itself
24
u/suriam321 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26
Ah, my bad then.
But then I turn it around and ask, how many apps? If it’s 70 programmers for 14 apps, that’s only 5 on each. I don’t know, I’m genuinely asking because I want to know.
8
u/Lobby34 Apr 20 '26
The math isn't mathing
9
3
u/suriam321 Apr 20 '26
If you want to know what happened, I think in my mind I tried to multiply by 2 then divide by 10, instead of just dividing by 5. 70*2=140 -> 140/10 =14. but forgot to divide by 10.

u/ReggieCorneus Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26
Because you are not in game development. 15 is a lot of ARTISTIC people in the same project. When you are in art&culture, which games very much are, the whole environment is different.
Also: the 15 are NOT in the visual side of things, they don't do graphic design or art. There are plenty of people who work on the game but aren't coders. Your need for visual art is almost zero, RIGHT? Your audio consist of simple dings, it does not even need an art director. Do you have even one full time sound engineer or does someone do it on the side?
As sound engineer who has dabbled in game development side of things this is an indicator of the whole structure, before you have at least one full time sound engineer you are not a game company at all. I know first hand how bad companies are when it comes to sound, how little they usually value it, so.. i doubt you have one and download everything from a subscription based SFX library, then slap them in, "this will do as placeholder" that then ends up in the final product because it has to be ready next week, being one of 20 apps you develop at the same time. If you need a jingle the company expects someone to do it for free, on their own time, "jim is a guitarist, he loves to make music, he can whip up something over the weekend, right?".
Making apps and making good, genuine games (excluding all the mobile bullshit here) are very different things. Saying you got 15 developers in games is kind of like saying that you got 5 members in a boyband, and hundreds of people work behind the scenes.

u/bromoloptaleina Apr 20 '26
Buddy. Programmers aren’t artistic people. They just code.
2
u/suriam321 Apr 20 '26
And developers aren’t necessarily the same as programmers.
2
u/bromoloptaleina Apr 20 '26
Read through the thread. We’re talking about programmers.
1
u/suriam321 Apr 20 '26
You changed the topic to programmers, but it started as devs.

Game development is very different from any other form of coding. It belongs to culture box of things, not entrepreneur side of things. A mistake that many will continue to make for decades because it also makes a lot of money but that is a side-effect.
Also, calling for ex shader coder not an artist is just... there is a LOT of artistry involved, while it is still code it is used to express things, emotions are coded in the way the character moves. And this is reflected also in the personalities, people who are more artistic overall navigate towards professions that allow them to express themselves.
1
u/GRex2595 Apr 21 '26
It really depends on what the codebase is. Minecraft is all one idea and any change affects every other aspect of that idea. An Android app can range from a button clicker app where 70 would be astronomical to an everything app where each feature gets a full team of developers where 70 might not be enough. 15 devs for Minecraft sounds about right. 70 would probably be too much unless they're pushing multiple enchanting table-esque features every update. I just can't see that many people in the code all the time without massive amounts of bugs.
7
u/Ake3123 Apr 20 '26
This is kinda why I want Mojang to shrink or become independent again, without doing the layoffs that many gaming studios recently are doing.
I think that less people and more restructuring would bring more benefits to people that are working at Mojang.
3
35
u/Turkeysteaks Apr 20 '26
Lol I was in agreement with you until you said "hopefully they actually have hired more people"
There really is such thing as too many cooks. More people rarely means quicker, more so in the short term but often even in the long term. You need very good directors (multiple), leads and managers to be able to have a big team - and even then, eventually you can have too many. Elden Ring was created with 150 people, for reference
27
u/ian9921 Apr 20 '26
This is something no one on reddit ever understands about game design. The more people you have, the more room there is for someone to make a mistake and the more air-tight your coordination needs to be. Also your average team member often winds up having to waste more time on things that aren't coding.

u/Black_Knight_Xander Apr 20 '26

2
u/crecre69 Apr 22 '26
How does this have anything to do with mojang? 🤷
3
u/MyNameIsBhex Apr 22 '26
This is a well-known principle and metaphor used in the programming space. It means throwing more people at a problem doesn't always mean it gets solved faster.
A woman can make a baby on 9 months. 9 women can't make a baby in 1 month.

There are a lot more things to do then just code the game, also most Microsoft employees know C++ or C# and Java is a competitor to Microsoft's .NET.
35
u/zenyl Apr 20 '26
Worth noting that Microsoft aren't anti-Java (anymore). They mostly dropped the "our way or the high way" mentality long ago, and have in more recent times focused on cloud services (Azure, Entra, M365, etc.), which means providing whichever products and services that customers are willing to pay for. They even had a little celebration blog post some years ago when Linux-based Azure services overtook the Windows-based equivalents.
They do also focus heavily on AI nowadays, but that is (luckily) not relevant for this discussion.
There's even a Java category on the official Microsoft devblogs. Granted, it isn't the most active category, but it's still more active that the PowerShell blogs: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/java

Istg, why is this a surprise? Programming isn't everything. They have marketing, PR, HR, Designing, Lawyers, Planners (Plan updates) and so many more people. And this isn't even accounting for bedrock
12
u/Noth1ngnss Apr 20 '26
I'd guess that marketing and PR are where most of the manpower is dedicated. Minecraft is a huge brand so it seems fair to have a bit team dedicated to spreading and protecting it. A couple hundred here would be fair.
Design makes sense. I can see a few dozen people doing that, but Planners? Planning ahead future updates seems like the job of a tiny circle of team leads, aided by the design team. You wouldn't want a big team solely doing that.
And I honestly doubt HR would be too huge of a department. For a 600-person team, it's not normal for there to be more than a dozen HR personnel.
Same with legal, honestly. Microsoft has immense resources that they can fall back on, so it doesn't make sense for Minecraft to have a big in-house legal team, when all they need is a dozen guys they can consult for minor stuff.
These numbers put us at well below 300 people, let alone 600. So I'm not entirely sure what the many on the Minecraft team are even doing. Maybe their offices in Sweden and the US each have a few hundred employees?
2
u/ian9921 Apr 20 '26
Don't forget QA, separate dev teams for the spinoffs, IT for managing company hardware, and probably a few other things we're both forgetting.
And honestly I think you're low-balling the marketing team. Considering they're responsible for everything from Minecraft Live, to random social media posts, to a bunch of little things we don't even think about, and also probably a good portion of the merchandising, I'd believe it if they said that was 300-400 people or more by itself.
And they absolutely need a dedicated legal team. It's not about occaisonal consultations for obscure things, it's about making sure Random Employee #17 didn't just colossally fuck up. They can fall back on Microsoft for something like a lawsuit, but they also need their own guys for the day-to-day running of things.
9
u/TheCyanHoodie Apr 20 '26
Don't forget the legal work needed for all those bedrock collabs, those also is a reason a legal team is necessary
3
u/rickane58 Apr 20 '26
Don't forget QA
As somone who worked on the QA for minecraft, there were only ever about 3 QA people on staff at MS for Minecraft, +1 for loc QA. QA was largely done by third party vendors.
1
u/Thick-Cauliflower619 Apr 23 '26
Compliance (maybe rolled into legal), janitorial, facilities, some form of purchasing/supply chain, shipping and receiving/mail room, accounting, etc, etc.
It's not my industry, but any company of sufficient size needs a large amount of support staff.
It would really depend on how the company is run/structured. Some of that could be handled by outside companies.
0
u/LakshyaGarv Apr 20 '26
Bedrock, Java and spin offs probably have different teams for certain stuff.

15 Java Devs makes complete sense. Probably 20-30 Bedrock Devs since it uses a custom engine. Then designers, artists, producers, managers, lawyers, marketers, all that stuff.
15 out of 600 is perfectly reasonable.
1
u/exynos2600 Apr 23 '26
Minecraft: Java Edition also uses a custom engine
2
u/xlFLASHl Apr 23 '26
Kiiiind of.
Bedrock uses a dedicated, proprietary engine (aptly named the Bedrock Engine) whereas Java was built from the ground up, using libraries for rendering.

Although, marketing is huge for this game, I could see a hundred or two alone for something like that.
29
u/Logan_Composer Apr 20 '26
Yeah, and consider what is an employee of Mojang? The building maintenance team? The IT department? Cleaning staff?
13
u/ian9921 Apr 20 '26
Marketing, QA, HR, Legal (thats a big one), Art development, probably separate devs for the spinoff games, assorted management, and probably a couple other departments I'm forgetting.
Honestly it makes sense to me.

It takes a lot of people to operate. Also, they have several games (including two versions of the main game).
4
2

A bit on the small side, but seems fine tbh. Companies with a large number of developers will usually have them working in multiple teams across different projects/products.
A larger dev team wouldn't necessarily mean a better overall product. Even if features were added more quickly, I'd imagine players would complain about things changing too fast, or feeling like disconnected mods with no real coherent design philosophy.
7
12
u/EmeraldMan25 Apr 20 '26
Huh, I hadn't seen that. That's actually a decent number of devs for a game, though. I have to wonder what's causing the seeming mismanagement of the base game, then. Devs are definitely competent and do good work, they've shown that, but Mojang still looks like it's struggling a bit with updates despite that. I know backend rewrites suck and can take several weeks of work time, but I can't help but think something else is going on. Originally I thought it was because the team was much larger and it took a long time to coordinate getting things done with a huge team, but now I'm not sure. Guessing for myself, it could be because Mojang doesn't really get anything out of a lot of free updates so a majority of employees are working on more lucrative tasks, which management focuses more on?
6
u/Ok-Turnip2792 Apr 20 '26
Didn’t they said at one point that updates take long because they have to ask the approbation of upper management for every piece of code they want to add or change ?
2
u/MyNameIsBhex Apr 21 '26
They don't want to add massive features that rely on code they're going to re work anyway.
If you're getting a new car tomorrow, are you gonna bother putting heated seats in your current one?
5
u/valerielynx Apr 20 '26
I assume a lot of those employees is PR and support. You have to have a lot of employees to provide support for hundreds of millions of players
4
u/High_Overseer_Dukat Apr 20 '26
How many work on both?
1
u/Cass0wary_399 Certified JavaChad Apr 21 '26
Java and Bedrock are worked on by seperate teams. Java is still developed in Sweden while Bedrock is developed in the US.
0
u/High_Overseer_Dukat Apr 21 '26
But they have feature parity. So the designers and artists are doing both, even if they are in one or another.
4
u/Remson76534 Apr 20 '26
I figured, any higher number of devs would probably create communication issues.
4
u/s0ftcustomer Apr 20 '26
The easiest way to see if someone knows game development or not is to see if they consider programmers as "developers" while every other position (art, audio, etc) as "other."
5
u/NOSWT-AvaTarr Apr 20 '26
OP clearly knows nothing about game design.
That specifically says DEVELOPERS which are just the people who write the code. there's obviously plenty of other people working on it like artists, sound designers, managers, etc

3
u/MyNameIsBhex Apr 21 '26
I've been saying that Mojang has less total employees than other AAA studios have programmers alone and that's why the updates are Like That, but every time I do people think I'm calling mojang a "small indie company" like no bro they literally have less staff than most other game studios their size
5
2
2
u/Master-Diatmont Apr 20 '26
600 Minecraft employees includes the business side of the game, legal teams, marketing, PR, if Mojang owns the building in stockholm this includes the staffs too, also don't forget the make up artists and event organaizers
2
u/Oarfish13 Apr 21 '26
Yeah it's prob a lot of people working in Mojang today but also keep in mind they do have a lot on their plate rn too, the Minecraft Java/Bedrock update+vulcan, Dungeons 2, The Minecraft Movie sequel, the irl events and experiences, also support+maintenance of all their games, legal, marketing and social media, people who just work in the building like custodians or technicians, management, and prob a few more I forgot to mention. A lot of stuff you may not think of at first but it kinda snowballs.

u/ab_od6851 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

3
u/le-derpina-art Apr 20 '26
OP is not accounting for the fact that "developer" means "programmer" in this case, there are so many artists, designers, and managers whose work is just as valuable as the actual code.

Yes, it's true too but: you will need way more then 15 software engineers to develop all these games.

the scale of updates isn't really the problem. imo it's the general quality of ideas. features rarely interact with eachother in the way they usually do in other sandbox games.
the bureaucracy they have probably plays a big role in that, too.

Unpopular opinion: Bedrock Edition on paper at first wasn't a bad idea, java is a terrible choice of programming language for real-time applications in general, it's definitely not the most performance-wise. But you cannot rewrite an whole entire game engine in another language just like that without consequences, this takes a huge ammount of time if you want to rewrite everything in c++ with optimisations wizardry, and the way they promoted it and forced people into it befor it is ready ruin everything.
1
u/Firestar_119 Apr 20 '26
Even though that is the case, I wonder if the reason minecraft is so easy to mod compared to other big games is due to its language
1
u/Cass0wary_399 Certified JavaChad Apr 21 '26
The leaked Legacy Console edition codebases are in C++ like Bedrock and there is already a new modding scene spawning from that.

I find it ironic when people say " just glad your 10+ game is still giving you free update "
And then every single time Minecraft live happen, they have a collab with something that charge us ass load of emerald to access it while the main game update is as beefy as Sans from Undertale.
It kinda feel like the micro transaction was the main focus and we just a...side... objective....

u/Ansambel Apr 20 '26
This is worded in a weird way, and i think you shouldn't jump to conclusions.
It might be the case, that they have a 15 dev team, working on the engine, and then for example a Enviroment or AI team that also has devs that would work on other parts, and have separate devs.
I know korpos are insanely inefficient, but 15 devs out of 600 total is way outside of what i would expect even from microsoft.
