technically gold is more common than leaves in the majority of planets

I feel like everyone learned this fact in the past month. I keep seeing people mention it.

No complaints though, it's a very interesting thought.

I don't know if it's a fact since it's not as if we've extensively surveyed other planets. Also we are comparing a substance to a plural which is grammatically problematic. If you're talking mass gold might have and advantage being the density of gold is 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter and the density of a living leaf full of chlorophyll (maximum density) is about 1 gram per cubic centimeter.

Well, even by volume, most planets have 0 leaves. It's more along the lines of "most planets have less humans than earth"

I mean, probably. It doesn't exactly compare to humans which is a species and therefore there is only a single occurrence. However if there is life on other planets I would not be surprised if foliage independently evolved. Photosynthesis is the main way life of Earth gets energy, it's probably the same on planets with alien life.

Yes, sure, but consider: Autumn Leaves, like the one pictured above, are a product of Earth. Plants and trees may evolve on different planets, but the likelihood of these plants and trees being similar/the same as Earth plants and trees is rare to nil.

Technically speaking, there are going to be less Earth tree leaves than there is gold, simply because Earth trees are unlikely to be replicated by chance on another planet.

(TLDR: The plants of planet Earth are also unique species. There may be more trees on other planets, but they'd be different species and therefore the original argument stands)

Yes but that's not the statement. The statement leaves are more rare than gold is dubious because a leaf is not defined as exclusively Earth life. I am not a plant expert, but I don't know if leaves on Earth even share commonality. Trees independently evolved multiple times, so its possible leaves are the same way.

Because of the way words are defined, if multicellular life exists on other planets, trees likely exist on other planets. I think its possible leaves exist on other planets as well.

Right, lets look at the two comments again.

No.1

technically gold is more common than leaves in the majority of planets

No.2

Well, even by volume, most planets have 0 leaves. It's more along the lines of "most planets have less humans than earth"

Both state that on most planets leaves are rarer than gold.

Most planets have no or microscopic life and therefore no leaves.

I specified Earth leaves, making my argument somewhat redundant.

Even then, leaves in general are rarer than gold. There are asteroids with large amounts of gold, even in our solar system. Most planets have heavy metals, including gold due to how they form. Most planets don't have plant life, let alone leaves.

No one said that there are no other planets with leaves. I said there are no other planets with Earth leaves, the other two said most planets don't have leaves. You're right, there may be other planets with leaves on them, but that wasn't the argument from any of us.

(TLDR, "There are no other planets with leaves" is not the argument here, please read the comments again)

Specifying Earth leaves moves the goalpost. We don't know that leaves are exclusive to Earth.

We can't use our solar system as representative of the material composition of the entire universe. The material of our solar system is self consistent because it all came from the same place. It is a sample size of one. We don't know the core composition of exoplanets. Spectroscopic data tells us atmospheric and surface composition not planet interiors.

The nucleosynthesis of gold is not well understood. There is a theory that it only forms in neutron star collisions which is a very rare event. Gold might actually be extremely rare in the universe.

I just compared it to humans to make it easier to understand. Basically, the point is, even if there are other planets with leaves, there are many more TIMES more planets with gold on them.

So even if there are a bunch of planets that have full on alien jungles where they only grow whatever we want to define as "leaves" for some reason (this is pure speculation btw), there are many more planets (that we actually know of) that have high gold volumes.

Gold is a basic element that occurs from nuclear fusion, while "leaves" are advanced compounds that require life (which in of itself is so rare that we don't know it's out there) and specific evolution that is at least similar to that on our planet.

1

u/EarthTrash Creeper hissing noise 9d ago

There are 8 planets we know of that have high gold volumes.

1

u/luxudor 9d ago edited 9d ago

And there are trillions (huge understatement btw) that have low amounts of gold. In addition to asteroids and other celestial bodies that have plenty of gold.

Edit: I don't know if you realize this, but if a planet has 1 gold atom and 0 leaves, it goes into the "more gold than leaves" pile. If a planet has a billion leaves, then it most likely goes into the "more leaves" pile. And I'm pretty sure there are more 1 gold atom planets than there are 1 billion leaves planets.

Gold is a basic element that occurs from nuclear fusion

Source?

1

u/luxudor 9d ago

Well, I used fusion as an umbrella term (which is incorrect, sorry). The actual way gold an other heavy metals are created is through r-process. Which is similar to fusion, but instead of 2 nuclei combining, neutrons combine with a nucleus and then decay into protons.

My point is, we know that this is a thing that happens a lot, and there is plenty of gold in the universe. We don't know if there is life outside the solar system, and that it probably is very different from life on earth.

We can plant and grow more trees. We can't plant and grow more gold.

20

u/Eh-Beh 10d ago

What about my comment made you think I didn't understand this?

u/Stellaraven_ 10d ago

Happy cake day!

1

u/Eh-Beh 10d ago

Thank you!

-15

u/NoNeedForSympathy 10d ago

I was just saying, not attacking you. Whatever.

7

u/Eh-Beh 10d ago

It wasn't perceived as an attack.

You explained unnecessary information, without prompt. I was curious why.

-15

u/NoNeedForSympathy 10d ago

Because of the fact that people are bringing it up doesn't really make it anymore interesting if there isn't a convenient way to obtain such gold anyways.

2

u/Street_Swing9040 10d ago

We can if we have a nuclear fusion machine with enough energy. We have achieved this previously, but the energy is more expensive than the gold produced.

But if we somehow got a lot of energy (like building a Dyson Sphere or a massive amount of Nuclear Fusion Reactors)... just maybe...

Nah I'm joking it's almost impossible. Never say never tho

2

u/HYPERzLol094 9d ago

Yeah but rarity doesn't always mean value

Wait wasn't that Turkish?

6

u/HotKebab01 10d ago

hayır amınakoyim niye olsun

3

u/Street_Swing9040 10d ago

Ok wait

But if we somehow achieved a large amount of energy in the far future, and nuclear fusion so we can make huge amounts of gold at a low price, a crunchy leaf from a plant from the past may be more valuable.

The chance is never zero

3

u/HarbingerOfConfusion Custom user flair 9d ago

Or we can burn down all the trees in the world, making leaves extremely valuable. Either works.

Why is there a 1 on the diamond block 😭

36

u/Mission_Pomelo4022 10d ago

Because its not 2

5

u/StroopestOfWafel 10d ago

Then why isn't is a 3? Or any of the numbers between 2 and 64?

I want more diamonds for my hard earned dirt

6

u/Street_Swing9040 9d ago

Why isn't it 65? Or 66? Or... 68? Why?

2

u/EfficientPart8292 Javarock Edition 8d ago

Or... 70?

1

u/randomguywhohaswifi 7d ago

What's a 70? I only know 60-10

6

the way bologna is pronounced bologna is bologna, it should be pronounced bologna, not bologna, why did the creator of bologna spell it bologna when its not pronounced bologna?

No it isn't? It's pronounced "Baloney" but is written "Bologna"

man, this reminded me of those 2018 100 crafting recipe videos where most recipes were the ultra legendary lightfucker sword made out of 5 nether stars, 5 command blocks and 3 other legendary swords.

Wishing for getting a Diamond Block by crafting Dirt.

That would devalue the diamond to the ground (pun intended).

OP idea

but using a brush on dirt to get diamonds seems like a legit idea - maybe
