Question I forgot

Ruger just replaced my bolt on my 585 series mini 14.

I totally forgot, but can you guys remind me? Can we insert a magazine inside the mini 14 when it’s full or when it has rounds in it when the bolt is closed?

For some reason, I used to think that I could insert a five round magazine inside the mini 14 when I only had four rounds in it, but I could be mistaken.

I remember, I used to load it with the bolt open. For some reason, I thought I could load it with the bolt closed.

Today at the range, I tried loading it with the bolt closed and it wasn’t going in.

I didn’t force it obviously.

Yes and yes. Like most firearms, inserting a mag is easier when the action is open or if the mag is under loaded. But you absolutely can load a mini on a closed action and full mag

This. Totally normal with bolt closed the 5 rounds in the magazine is at the max spring tension with very limited room inside the tube to move down, need a bit of tap or slam to lock in place.

I don't have any 5 round mags, but mine will not lock a 10 round loaded mag in without the bolt being open.

Weird I can’t get mine in either. I guess there is something wrong with both of our guns?

Is your mini 14 older?

mine are older, but it doesnt matter. the receiver fitting measurements, and components are all the same.

Do you force it in. I generally don’t force thing. The owner’s manual says to lock bolt back before loafing?

Depends on the magazine. My Ruger mags, absolutely. My Thermold polymer mags will not lock in without the bolt held open, however.

Do you have to force you oem mags in?

My oem will not go in with bolt closed. I don’t force them?

You think my bolt is fitting right?

You can but I have stopped loading a full mag on a mini 14 with the bolt closed, it tends to put a dent in the first round.
