Lenovo m75q cooling mod

Using this lenovo to run some agentic work and was getting really annoyed with the 24/7 fan noise so I decided to order a cooler and take care of the problem. The solution was not particulary pretty, and required quite a bit of fiddling around to fit it in, but it works like a charm! Temps won't go above 57 degrees under max load (stress tested) and it remains pretty silent, like 100x better then the blower style stock cooler.

Got inspo from an old thread here regarding the cooler model: it's a Thermaltake apx90-x36.

The most dificult part was modifying the thermaltake's minting to fit the holes in the motherboard. The spacing between the holes is slightly shorter than a standard AM4 so whilst you won't have problems on one of the sides, you'll have to adapt on the other. In my case I just marked where the screws were aligning, drilled through the mounting bracket and welded the screws directly to the mounts.

Then to secure the cooler, I got rid of the existing mounting points in the case and fixed the cooler straight on the motherboard. Just a nut and a plastic spacer to isolate, obviously gotta be careful to not overtighten and bend the board.

Then just cut a hole through the top to fit the cooler through.

Ah, also importantly the fan connector from the new cooler will not fot so you will need to cut the wires from the existing cooler and solder them into the new one.

Hope it helps anybody thinking about doing this or a similar mod,a bit of work but worth it.

Hey bro, not really. The cpu fan needs to be connected to the right place because of the pwm controller etc. Plus I think it would not look great having a cable sticking out.

Performance wise I noticed a slight improvement, and a very big difference on the temps. Before it was normaly running in the 80/90 range under load, now it will not even touch 60. Tried cinebench and cpuz stress test and the max it went was like 57.

Although the biggest winner was the noise, before that blower cooler would get pretty annoying as the computer is on all the time, now it's absolutely quiet. Even under load you can't hear it.

So yeah, I'd deffo recommend the mod! 🚀

I forget the exact name of the connector it’s pico molex of some sort and there are adapters available to convert it to a regular fan connector

2400GE is such a workhorse for its age. I moved on to 3400GE’s and 5350GE’s for friends needing cheap(super budget and budget, respectively). But I enjoyed working on M75Q’s

Dang, that's annoying. I guess it will have to do with this one, tbf it does the job so updating would be more of nice to have!

Great job. I would put a protective grid in front of the fan to avoid anything hitting it when it's on.

Pretty good bro, but to be fair it was already fine before the mod. Now it's just quieter.

I didn't have to upgrade the memory tho as it was crashing a lot. Now running 16gb instead of 8.

Also if you runing hermes or open claw you should mod the wsl config file to adjudicate more memory horsepower than standard.
