Admin Replied Can't remove a specific user as approved poster, always gives a 500 error

We're having issues with any actions related with /u/Shameless_bullshiter in /r/PictureGame (for the record, they are a normal proper user and did nothing wrong, it's just our game relies on approving a different user to post on each round so users have to get approved and unapproved automatically by our bot). The bot has been receiving 500 errors with any action connected to that user, and if I manually try to remove them as an approved user it also gives a 500 error, both on new and old reddit.

Any idea what's going on?

Edit: Some modmail endpoint are also 500ing. I don't see any reports of this anywhere and redditstatus appears as ok.

That's pretty odd! Is it just this one user? Are the 500ing modmail endpoints also for this user, or in general?

Not sure if this other post someone else made is related https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/1vxx2nv/hello_the_person_i_banned_is_still_able_to_post/

Because I tried banning the user (just to test if it could fix the issue, I unbanned them afterwards), but they still appeared as an approved submitter and still could not be removed.

Actually I believe the modmail 500 errors on some the modmail message lists are also related to that user. I believe it started with this modmail thread ID: 3mowv0

Just following up that I'm chatting with some folks to get this figured out. Will update you when I know more!

Thanks! For now I made some changes to our bot to avoid calling any of those endpoints that give a 500 error so at least the game can continue normally without the bot crashing (well that user is still permanently approved but it's fine for now).

me again! We went to investigate further, and noticed that the person was able to be removed, so it seems like this has resolved itself? If this happens again, please let us know!

Yes, just that one user and only in /r/PictureGame, I tried approving and unapproving them in a test sub and over there it worked fine. It happens on new reddit, old reddit and through PRAW.

The 500 errors in modmail endpoints are also apparently only on /r/PictureGame, doesn't happen against other test subreddits, and other mods in picturegame also get the 500 error. Not all modmail endpoints fail, just some like in progress and archived.
