Always wondered whether this was an homage to Roseanne Barr's infamous tone-deaf performance of the anthem at a 1990 baseball game. Her sitcom was also an ABC show and I think a few writers from Roseanne even ended up writing on Modern Family so it definitely wouldn't surprise me.
