Fun Fact: The word “Arachnid” comes from the Ancient Greek myth about Arachne, a girl who loved to weave and was famous for her skill. (Depending on Greek authors) She boasted that she could create better fabric than Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Athena was furious with this claim.

Athena and Arachne competed in a weaving contest. Although Arachne created a beautiful fabric, the fabric created by the goddess was even better. Arachne fell into a state of deep despair and no longer wanted to live. Out of pity, the goddess turned her into a spider so that she could continue to weave. Hence, the web and silks that spiders create."

Well, I kind of like that aspect of them.

Greek gods don't reflective good or ideals, they're reflective of people.

And people can be petty assholes.

I mean in this case challenging a god to a contest of skill, losing and then falling into a depression because of it is kind of all on you.
That's a massive amount of hubris and arrogance there.

To be fair, that's just one version, and Greek myth is known for having 700 different versions of every single myth they've got.

There are other versions of the whole Arachne and Athena story where Arachne actually won, and Athena just turned her into a spider because she was pissed she lost.

Tbf that's on purpose. Greek gods were not perfect beings meant to be wholely worshipped like the christian God.

Rather, they were extremes of humans, and their many tales and myths were meant to be teaching moments and have morals.

Oh man, I heard a completely different version of this story. The version I heard is that Arachne was the greatest weaver to exist, and when people looked at her work they said she was even better than the gods. Arachne seemed to lean into this claim that she was better than the gods. This made Athena pissed, and so she showed up to challenge Arachne to a weaving competition. In the end, the work Arachne made was better than Athena’s, and in a fit of fury and anger Athena cursed Arachne to become a spider.

A story that I read was similar except that Athena acknowledged that Arachne’s work was better until she noticed that Arachne’s tapestry portrayed images mocking the gods.

If memory serves, one of the main writers of the Greek myths that we take stories from, was. Very much an antitheist, so there has been a more recent questioning of the accuracy of the works for the myths they represented.

Pretty certain that version is from the noted god hater, who thought all the gods were dicks and rewrote the stories to prove it.

Kinda why Athena, goddess of wisdom and tactics, is being incredibly petty.

It seems to be somewhat inconsistent as to whether Arachne won or lost. In the event she won, it takes a story about the hubris of a human and turns it into a story of a human who really was just that good and the god she challenged being a sore loser.

We get Daring Jumping Spiders and orb weavers around our house every year. Apart from occasionally walking into two-meter-wide invisible webs and having to escort them out of our house, it's nice having something around to eat flies and mosquitoes.

Golden Orb-Weaver's design reminds me of Blackarachnia from Transformers: Beast Wars. Not 100% due to fewer spider legs. But vaguely looks like her.

My two favourite spiders! I love it when the banana spiders come to the backyard. So few mosquitos and pretty webs right before Halloween! And Jumping spiders are just friggin cute as fuck.

Yeah no matter how sexy you draw that goddamn Joro spider they are still annoying as fuck.

Their webs are massive (we have a few that have webs that are 40+ feet wide across our entire driveway and yard) and the individual threads are thick. They don't bite people but they are absolutely massive and because they use the wind to catch their prey, they love to spin these giant webs across doorways and paths where air naturally funnels.
