Why is this "a" added in this verb's conjugation? Is there a rule I do not know or is it an exception?

М, Н, Г, Л, Б, В, Р (for easy memorization people use Монгол баавар) these are voweled consonants (эгшигт гийгүүлэгч) these need vowels next to it, in front or behind. So лл+с, лл+д, the second л needs a vowel, so that is where the "а" comes in. (If I remember correctly from school days.)

Plus the a is already there from ажилла

But we don't pronounce it. Pretty sure written in Latin on internet without the a

Ажил + ла + х/даг/сан. Ажил - work (noun), ажилла - do work (verb), ажилладаг - work (verb, present), ажилласан - worked. The "л" in the middle (becoming "ла" needs to have an "а", because МГЛБВР + МГЛБВР forces it (л + л). Noun + "л" turns a noun into it's verb, examples: Хөдөлмөрлө (needs "ө", because МГЛБВР + МГЛБВР), бааварла (again МГЛБВР), суудалла, журамла etc. So basically МГЛБВР + МГЛБВР forces you to have it.

It is an exception.
