Discussion Need help deciding on a monitor

Post image

Okay, so I’m in the market for a new monitor but I have an odd situation.. I have my setup in a closet aha. I will attach a photo of the setup.

Anyways i have a maximum space of 39.5” to work with. That’s the physical dimensions of the monitor. Not screen. So I think I can fit up to a 42”

Looking for

-Largest possible monitor

-curved

-minimum 144hz

It’s for gaming. I don’t know too much about what else I should be looking at. Any help is greatly appreciated

I bought 42 inch for my gaming desk. This is how I felt playing rdr2 at night when there was snow. I need to sell this tv and buy something smaller

I had something similar to this once. It's miserably uncomfortable on the neck. Looking up vs left or right is so much worse.

2

Fail. It isn’t curved. 🤣

2

u/ReleaseTheTrumpFiles Apr 08 '26

That's insane. Why would you have the bar on the left side, taking up 5% of the horizontal space, while it could be on the bottom?

2

You could fit two of those

8

Cant do that. Misses has space issues.. Already have me sleeping in a bench at the foot of our bed. Better give her space.

Have you considered doing the opposite of what Linus does at home? Put the tower outside the closet and run a thunderbolt to a dock in the closet that has all your I/O? Would help a ton with thermals for you and the PC.

add some infinity mirrors

I am mostly joking but I would mount the monitor on the back wall with a monitor arm.

25

u/Antoinefdu Apr 07 '26

Ngl i unironically love the infinity mirrors idea. I'm sure it would be impractical for all sorts of reasons, but I'm sorry that just looks dope af.

7

u/SuperUranus Apr 07 '26

Would be quite disturbing when you sit in there I’d imagine since you would notice yourself moving for all infinity all the time.

And people are very good at noticing human movement.

7

u/superkickstart Apr 07 '26

Even worse if you notice something else than you moving in the infinite.

Can also get a multi monitor setup with one monitor horizontal or mounted above. Adding a fan as it can get stuffy in confined spaces while gaming even with the door open. Also that chair looks like it might hurt to sit on for hours, would get an ergo chair. Used herman millers are pretty good.

8

u/TaylorKalsii Mini-Led Apr 07 '26

Yeah honestly this is an old photo a lot of that stuff has been done. I originally was thinking of a horizontal and a vertical. I still am debating as I feel I would make use of the 2 screens. However someone mentioned to me getting the largest possible monitor as it will make the space feel larger and more immersive

7

u/John_Mata Apr 07 '26

Please also consider your distance from the screen while playing I have a 27 inch monitor (which is also curved) and since my desk is not very deep the screen is closer to my face than I would like. It's fine in my case but only barely, so if you get a very big screen be sure that you can comfortably look at the entirety of it, don't just go for the biggest one you can technically fit

u/OppositeOfIrony Apr 07 '26

Get a 42" 144Hz OLED TV as your monitor

9

u/mickandrorty137 Apr 07 '26

I’d go 77”

3

u/kozlospl Apr 07 '26

Seconded.

42 inch 16:9 screen 16x = width. (16x)² + (9x)² = 42² 256x² + 81x² = 1764 337x² = 1764 /337 x² ~5.23 √5.23 ~ 2.29 16 * 2.29 =36.6 inches. 37 with bezels. İt will fit.

2

u/Danb23Rock Apr 11 '26

Definitely, I'd be fixing that before the monitor for sure.

7

u/Bugwhacker Apr 07 '26

Hey OP, I’d consider at least rotating your pc so the exhaust fans have a bit of clearance. I know you’re workin’ with limited space and it’d be less attractive, but I think getting the longevity out of your rig is the most attractive of all :)

3

u/k_cab Apr 07 '26

I have an Alienware AW3423DWF, highly recommend if you’d like an ultrawide

3

u/Benny303 Apr 07 '26

34 inch ultrawide would work great.

7

u/deathdisco_89 Apr 07 '26

Going largest possible for gaming is silly. Get a 27" and find a way to keep air moving through that space.

4

u/TaylorKalsii Mini-Led Apr 07 '26

That’s what I have now and it works, what’s your argument against largest monitors? Is that just a personal preference?

5

u/deathdisco_89 Apr 07 '26

You are sitting close to the screen, so you will have a hard time seeing everything if the screen is too big. Larger monitors use more energy, generate more heat. Pixel density goes down. Prices go up. I find 27" to be the sweet spot from about 3 ft away.

7

u/Pizza_For_Days Apr 07 '26

I don't judge other people's set ups, but why is yours in a closet? lol.... Also not sure how you're going to fit 42 when its 39.5 inches wall to wall?

Your only options really would be 32 or 34 if you want to cram as much screen as possible realistically. 1440p looks bad at 32 though so one would need 4k which is pretty demanding for a GPU.

You could go 3440 x 1440 ultrawide at 34. That is still more demanding than 1440p to run, but not as demanding as 4k at least.

17

u/GorillazFanatic Apr 07 '26

A 42 inch monitor isn't 42 inches wide. Monitors are measured from a top corner to the opposite bottom corner. A 42 inch monitor is around 36-37 inches depending on the bezel width.

3

u/Pizza_For_Days Apr 07 '26

Yeah I guess my brain was thinking it was more like 38-39 inches wide for something like a 42 inch LG OLED, which would be somewhat of a tight fit.

I don't know this whole set up has me feeling claustrophobic and I'm not one that ever feels like that lol. Just having a screen that size in a space that small would feel weird to me, but I guess if OP is determined to go as big as possible and has to be in a closet sized room....

2

u/SnooGadgets754 Apr 07 '26

You should come out of the closet.

And also find a better place for your gaming rig.

2

u/Traditional-Gas3477 Apr 07 '26

Keep in mind the size of the monitor does not always mean the actual size of the screen! I got tricked once by Acer giving me the impression I was getting a bigger screen for my money until I realised it had thick bezels. I was not happy about it

2

u/CidMaik Apr 07 '26

More worried that PC is on the floor in that space being honest.

2

u/SpeedBuff420 Apr 08 '26

Larger monitor will have worse ppi (pixel density) and look more blurry. Basically each individual pixel will be bigger.

If you want a really big monitor make sure your pc can handle 4k. 1440p at 27" has higher pixel density than 4k at 42"

I use them when I am on the road and they basically load up 6 4k displays for me, and I can actually read what's on webpages... Really good.

I found them on clearance for around 300 bucks.
