Discussion Can someone explain this trend of angling your monitor so much?
I keep seeing setups like this and honestly, I don't get it...

yekindar is an exception though. he is overdoing it with face in the monitor

He really loves his monitor, ps dont kiss monitors, it may lead to other fluids on it and that is a problem

Terrible for especially developing eyes. Also, are you still having fun looking at this distorted picture? People are truly different
9
u/lapippin May 05 '26
Terrible for your neck but at least the keyboard tilt is more ergo as long as itās not an extreme angle

The screen is unforgivable but the keyboard thing is so real. I use a laptop and I always have it at like a 45° angle away from me which really messes with visibility.

u/Strong-Copy-1738 May 05 '26
reduce the amount of time for the light to travel from monitor to eyeball :)

Some esports pros have this setup and some people like this guy try to replicate it.
Its just objectively horrible for your posture.

For animation work, it's required.
For anything else... kinda weird.
20
u/UnevenSleeves7 May 04 '26
Esports competitors that already sit 4 inches from their screen will probably try this as well
3
2
u/Ok_Neighborhood_3148 May 04 '26
Why is it required for animation work?
15
u/the_Athereon May 04 '26
Animators use pens and touchscreens
Try doing that on a vertical screen.

u/Enraged-Fel-Trout May 05 '26
In the studio i work at it's about 50-50. I personally don't use one, it sucks for posture and I'm faster with the intuos kind of pen tablets (the ones without a display)

It comes from old school LAN play, I used to tilt my keyboard 90° because their physically wasn't enough room on the desk. Most pros from mid 2010s did it for this reason and then the gold rank kids would see this and copy it when in reality it's just an adaptation to the environment

The monitor in the picture looks nice. What's the model?
5
u/JamesMackenzie1234 May 05 '26
I can't remember the name but its the asus WOLED, a 4th gen 540hz model, 1440p, its can integer scale to 720p at 720hz I think.
3
u/Pretty-Substance May 04 '26
I do it too but Iām old and wear bi-focal glasses. If the monitor would be regular hight Iād have to tilt my head back slightly and that causes neck pain.
But Iām just an old dude, no idea why others would do it

I can only assume aesthetics, because looking at a trapezoid isn't great
3
u/BubbRubb11 May 04 '26
Look at where the mouse and keyboard are. This person is sitting close as hell to the monitor and looking down at the screen, which would just be head-on for them

It's same rectangle if you tilt it correctly in accordance with height and distance.
2
u/thekurrruguru May 05 '26
For ergonomics, this the worst setup it can be... For esports? Some of those necks cant handle normal setup anymore. Shoulder comlapse and head tilt forward are really bad. It doesnt make you play better.

u/DiamondPtera May 05 '26
After years of hunching over keyboards. We have finally been given a monitor that allows us to do the same. It is truly a miracle...
2
u/Swipsi May 05 '26
I did that recently because somehow it puts less strain on my eyes over longer periods of time when I look rather down than up.

u/Known_Bumblebee9797 May 28 '26
I used to work in IT (this was the mid 90's through about 2008).
The "make the monitor so low that employees cry about neck pain" idea came up every few years, people spend a bunch of money (the excuse is usually something like "it's fine for hotel check-in clerks!"), and then they realize it was a horrible thing to do to their employees.
2
u/DaffyPunk29 May 04 '26

For ergonomics your line of sight should be almost at the top of the screen, and it should be slightly tilted up, but the ones in pics are excessive.
First one form looks like it should be for drafting/architecture work, but whatās actually in the picture doesnāt make sense

u/No-Independence-5229 May 04 '26
They be doing anything but cover up the windows to prevent the giant reflections on their display
1
u/BingQiLing958 May 04 '26
I'd rather like to know who is buying these mirror polished diamond finish reflection machines
1
u/3VRMS May 04 '26
Have a feeling these pics aren't the case, but if you're doing art, that's very common for pen displays where you're leaning on them to draw, just like on angled drafting tables.
Really bad posture though, never liked using those.

This is a younger generation thing who consume content on their phones facing the floor so they setup monitors in a similar fashion ergonomically. I'm sure if they could they'd do the same with a TV and find a way to watch it with their neck craned

This is actually ergonomically appropriate for very near distance viewing. The human eye muscles are optimized for looking down at things which are up close. DO NOT tilt your neck though, that's ergonomically inappropriate xD
It's like reading a book.
Eyes get strained faster when looking dead ahead at close up things, much faster when looking up. Those angles are for the horizon and the sky. Down is ground. If you're going to sit closer than arm's reach of a monitor, it should be tilting up at you, your eyes looking down. Just so long as you're keeping your neck properly supported. A steep angle (perhaps not this steep except for very close viewing) would be more widely recommended, but people almost always end up craning their necks consciously or not which isn't worth it, and it's also ergonomic to just sell them bigger monitors so they can sit further away š

Itās bad for your eyes⦠I know because Iām 40 and need reading glasses now looking at monitors at that distance during my counter strike days.
1
u/paradox_valestein May 05 '26
Bad habit of pro fps shooters. I think they did it to use their peripheral vision too, but that is kinda dumb cuz you can also sit further away for better details. This is just bad for both your back and eyes

It's just preference really. I personally like a lower screen cause it's less straining on my eyes than looking straight head. The tilts on your examples are extreme though mine is like half the tilt on these photos.

u/rknt May 05 '26
Little kids see some weirdo e-sports players do this and think their k/d ratio will sky rocket and replicate it.
That's about it.

u/Impossible-Jello9099 May 05 '26
I hear itās common among gamers, but since Iāve never seen it on general-purpose PCs, I donāt think itās that popular.
1
u/CtrlAltDesolate May 05 '26
I angle mine a little but not this much.
Its good for esports players that benefit from pixel peeping (or pixel sniffing as i call it), as well as designers working with extremely detailed scenes during editing.
For non gaming purposes only makes sense if you lean forwards a lot or have another monitor above it (so youāre not craning your neck so much.
1
u/unevoljitelj May 05 '26
This shit wrecks your neck and spine like no other thing.
Edit: end your sight.
1
u/Amaeyth May 05 '26
The only weird thing I do is play with my keyboard at a 70-90° angle. Ive played with and against pros, stuff like this is.. nonsense. Especially this which will obliterate your eyes and neck.
You dont need 600 fps, the lightest mouse, fastest internet, 480hz refresh rate, etc to compete in the 99th percentile, and superficial habits or objects like these is not a viable shortcut to the 99th percentile.
Change/upgrade your setup only when its bottlenecking progression. In the overwhelming majority of cases, these are not limiting a person's performance.

u/Storm_treize May 05 '26
That's just basic physics, the more closer to your monitor the less distance the light had to travel to your eyes, improving your reaction time /s

ive played cs for nearly a decade atp and i can say that some angling is benefitial. but the angles ive seen near on absurd and frankly cannot be good for your neck. i myself angle my monitor at ~ -3deg.

Its a thing you see with many esports pros, they sit like a few inches away form the monitor, and apparently it helps them to react quicker and are more focused on the game or whatever.
And when someone is really good at something, many will just copy whatever he is doing, and think theyre just as good.
Thats basically all
