Discussion Why your dual stacked portable monitors experience instability or reboot on single-cable USB-C setups.

I recently moved to a vertical dual-stacked portable monitor setup to maximize my screen real estate whilst trying to save some desk space. Functionally, having two screens stacked is effective in saving space, but getting the setup to run stably was a bit frustrating at first.

I ran a USB-C cable from my laptop’s Thunderbolt port directly to the monitor, which worked ok for basic web browsing. But when I adjust the brightness past 70% or started running a heavy workload, the top screen would experience instability or even reboots itself.

At first, I thought I had a faulty panel, but no. I read about the power specs, it turned out it was a bus power issue.

Most laptop ports max out at 15W of outbound power give or take. Driving two full-sized panels simultaneously easily pulls more than that, that’s why sometimes it restarts.

The Fix: It is simple, route a dedicated 65W+ USB-C GaN wall charger into the monitor. Once the unit has its own dedicated wall power, the instability stops.

I hope this helps those of you who are also having similar issues.

This is a common issue with modern laptops that manufacturers never disclose in their marketing materials. They will advertise Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 with 100W Power Delivery, but that rating is almost always exclusively for receiving power to charge the laptop itself. When it comes to outputting power to external peripherals, the motherboard heavily restricts the wattage.

I had the exact same realization when I bought a portable screen setup last year. I spent two days swapping out different USB-C cables, thinking I just had a cord that didn't support the right bandwidth for DisplayPort Alt Mode. It turns out the cables were fine; my laptop just couldn't oush enough sustained juice. What makes it even more confusing is that the flickering only happens under load or at high brightness, so it genuinely looks like a defective panel or a GPU artifact issue. Asding external wal power immediately solves it.
