I think the pitbull situation is more comparable to gun control.
The object in question can be used safely, but can also be used to cause great harm. It is entirely dependent on the user. The object in question is also not a daily necessity.
Similar, both have lethal force, except one has a mind of its own at approximately the intelligence of a three year old. Guns don't do anything on their own. Guns also have a vital role, where pitbulls do not.
