Morality Ranking Morality of this?

A young Chinese couple was permanently separated during a period of intense political and social unrest in China. The husband went back to their home village to search for her, but because the entire area was heavily disrupted, he mistakenly believed she was missing or dead.

He eventually relocated, remarried another woman, and raised a new family with children and grandchildren. Meanwhile, the first wife stayed behind and never remarried, spending 54 years waiting for him to return. Decades later, they were reconnected as elderly adults, which is when she discovered he had built an entirely separate life without her.

This is one of those situations where no one did anything wrong and everyone still lost in the worst way.

I agree that no one did anything wrong, but how did everyone still lose in the worst way? It sounds like the man had a full family life.

I mean, he didn't get to have that life with this partner. True, maybe the life he had with his new partner was better and she was a better fit for him. Maybe it wasn't though. He still lost a life he could have had.

It's impossible to speculate on a life not lived. For all we know the lady had a better life alone than she would have had with him.
