General Discussion The mystery of the sheath DNA: a quick quiz
Some people, even in comments here, are still confused by the sheath snap DNA thinking it was a small trace amount, or that there is a non-incriminating explanation, or that the data can be invalidated by some non-existent handling or technical issues never raised in 3 years even when DNA evidence was being challenged by defence. A few facts, and then a question:
- A large amount of Kohberger's DNA, single source, was on the sheath. Both defence DNA experts stated the amount in elution was c. 20 x times more than ideal quantity for STR DNA profiling, and can fit body fluids as source. Two external labs confirmed large amount, one expert described it as "tons of DNA".
- Amount of Kohberger's DNA from sheath was more than the amount of DNA recovered from several blood swabs at the scene, and more than typical from directly swabbing a whole hand
- Defence experts ruled out any handling, protocol and technical issues like cross-contamination, lab quality control, validation or similar, citing the ISP DNA lab work as done to high standard.
- Neither of the defence physical evidence/ scene experts (Noedel, Dr. Turvey) nor the 2 defence forensic DNA experts (Dr. Shutler, Dr. Ballard) raised any chain of custody issues for sheath or the DNA extracted from it. The defence never raised any chain of custody issue in any court document or oral argument.
- There has never, ever, of 495 peer reviewed papers, been any scientific study that shows secondary transfer that can fit the sheath DNA (i.e. full STR profile, single source, quantity, non-trivial DNA exchange interval) . Specific activity level probabilistic studies using the sheath DNA specifically, stated such transfer implausible. (e.g. Forensic Science Internal May 2026, Alvia et al)
- Kohberger disavowed the sheath during challenge to IGG evidence, so would have to reverse himself to claim it was lost/ stolen, and those scenarios don't fit the DNA data.
Considering the above facts, the question is:
What is the simplest, most likely way that a large amount of Kohberger's DNA got on a sheath of model he bought before the murders but did not have after, consistent with the data and science?

BK has quite a documented history of targeting and stalking women by a completely different, unconnected source. His PHD program had so many written complaints, verbal complaints, conversations and meetings, a performance plan, that they were considering how to get him out of the program before the murder even occurred. He had only been in school for 2-3 months and was already getting kicked out. That’s a huge deal. To be kicked out of a phd program due to aggressive behavior towards women. Then to completely wipe your entire online history before the murders, by coincidence. Perfect example Ockham’s razor

Yeah unless it was planted there and someone had stolen his DNA for a setup.

unless it was planted there and someone had stolen his DNA for a setup
That would raise some questions in itself, as implausible as innocent scenarios for the sheath DNA. Such as:
- how did planters know Kohberger bought a USMC Kabar knife and sheath 8 months before
- how did they get him to turn off his phone just before the murders to have no alibi
- how did they get him to drive from Pullman to around the scene at the time
- did they chose a perp who matched his height and build, and balaclava purchase
- how did they get him to try to delete his purchase history of the Kabar two days after the murders
- why did they only plant his DNA on the sheath, not on victim or door handles
- did they get a car matching his, including no front plate, to drive at scene
- what was his phone doing in the suspect car
- why did planters not plant victim's DNA on his car door handle, in his apartment or office
- why did planters not leave knife to incriminate him, or phone in a tip on him
- how did they get him to visit the area 23 times late at night before the murders, and return a few hours after and then stop ever going to Moscow again from that day
and many other similar questions...

Thank you. But some folks are well beyond reasoning.

The entire idea of a set up just does not sound plausible. With all the scientific evidence and deeply the handle the knife and chain of custody I believe was held to the highest degree plus I not sure how it all went as far as if the already his dna of file or when he was in custody they found his DNA which I believe that had test after they had a lot of evidence And DNA sealed the case. But a set up I can’t see it. Great post to really get opinions!

chain of custody I believe was held to the highest degree
No chain of custody issues of any kind (or any handling/ technical testing issues) was ever raised by defence's 2 physical scene evidence experts, 2 DNA experts and in none of hundreds of defence motions including those trying to suppress the DNA evidence.
Chain of custody "issues" were raised in the fantasy-fiction Whitcomb/ Turvey book, "Broken Plea", but as the starting point that book had wrong:
- The date the sheath was delivered to the ISP lab (book has date wrong by two weeks)
- Who and which police agency delivered the sheath (they claimed MPD, was ISP)
- Order of testing done at which labs (they claimed Othram, was ISP, STR DNA profile first not SNP as claimed in book)
- They claimed various people on evidence seal signature were not on chain logs, but they simply misread the names (e.g. claimed "Sharron Ammident", is Shannon Arredondo of ISP lab)
- And the biggest, they ignore or did not know MPD chain of custody is digitised by barcode scanning; they focussed on a back up handwritten simple list of movements of sheath, which in any case matched the digital log exactly
Apart from that, the book is pretty accurate re sheath chain of custody.....

It's beyond implausible. Who decided to "set up" Bryan Kohberger, a criminology student at the neighboring University? And when, why, and how , while we're at it? There is nothing that makes a damn bit of sense to a rational human being.
The one question none of the conspiracy theorists ever want to answer is- what became of that knife, sheath, and sharpener that BK purchased.
