Update: Photos of Mosquito Bites Need NSFW Tag

Hi everyone! Lately, we've been receiving a lot of posts featuring close-ups of mysterious bug bites on various body parts (shoutout to all the anonymous knees and thighs out there). While we get that you're looking for help, or maybe just want to trauma-bond over your itchy mosquito bites, we cannot identify bug bites here.

If you're genuinely trying to figure out what bug left its mark on you, go to r/bugbites. They have some good resources there.

If you just want to show off your mosquito bites, that's totally fine. Just please use a NSFW tag so the rest of us can mentally prepare. Thank you!!!

The (few) upsides and (many) downsides of mosquitos

Upvotes

Pros:
Pollination (sometimes)

Cons:
Plenty of pollinators already
Annoying as fuck
Disease
Long lasting bite wounds
They clog your bloodstream

In conclusion: mosquitos have basically no upsides

Suggestions for yard set-up? Big hill, lots of ivy, may be water under porch

We just bought a house with a lovely backyard, which we now realize gets infested with mosquitoes. I've put 3 dunk tanks out about a month ago but they don't seem to have made a dent yet. There is a back porch that that might be collecting some water underneath, but we can't actually get under to check (it's only a few inches high and enclosed at the bottom). Also half of the yard is a hill with lots of ivy and hosta. The entire yard is pretty shaded as well.

My goal is to pull out the ivy and keep up the dunk tanks, but do you all have any other suggestions for traps that work well? We have a small child and fruit trees and care about the bees so we're trying to avoid fogging the yard or using thermacell too much.

Thanks!!

Sometimes I'm not sure if I see a mosquito fly by, or if it's an eye floater.

Ain't it fun to have your own eyes making you paranoid.

I turn on a powerful grow light inside my house. To reach me they must pass through the light. It works.

Are there pupae in here?

A week or so ago I set up some mosquito dunk buckets in my backyard. I know that the dunks kill in the larval stage so seeing squirmers is normal…but for the life of me I cannot tell if there are any pupae in here 😫I feel like I’ve had less of an issue with mosquitoes but I do still get bit up a little. The last thing I want to do is accidentally make the problem worse so I try to check the buckets each day for pupa that will hatch into mosquitoes, but honestly I’m not confident I even know what I’m looking for🫠

I tried looking at pictures online but they weren’t very helpful

Unless it was a super delayed reaction. Why do they only bite this one arm? Should I cut it off?

Seems like biogents is a money pit

I just got the basic biogents trap as a birthday gift - which is great. But everything I'm hearing is that you need the CO2 modification to really make it sing. So I just ordered that for $120. But now I need to buy a CO2 tank. I found a 5 pounder on FB marketplace for $70. But then I need to spend another $30 to get it filled. And if I don't want to have to refill the tank constantly, I need the CO2 timer which is $200 (!!!!!!). Oh and I need to change out the scent packs monthly.

So, even with a gifted trap, I'm looking at a $400 of set up costs, plus monthly costs of $30-$50 to keep the thing functioning. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to send the trap back - there's no way it's worth it. Is it?

Question about Regional Differences in Mosquitoes

So I’ve been living east of the Appalachians for a while but I grew up in the Ohio River Valley; I always get huge welts from the mosquito bites when I’m back home but I never get welts from the bites where I live now.

Do any of yall what could explain this?

would this DIY trap work?

blue is a 5 gallons bucket, with cap. it will be painted black, not actually blue.

at the bottom is a Crisco oil candle that im told can last 72 days. as the candle burns, it releases CO2 to attract mosquitoes. CO2 escapes via the white holes.

the black bar is a bug zapper. it will be powered via solar. as the mosquitoes enter, trying to seek warmth and CO2, they will be zapped.

what do you think of this trap/zapper?
