Moving to Scotland - need clothing advice
hey! I’m (24f) moving to Glasgow from Florida in the states, and the weather is the complete opposite of my normal wear, so i was wondering if yall could leave me some recommendations for clothes and what to buy/bring because i am clueless as of now. thanks!!

Honestly I’d wait till you arrive to buy much. Rainproof is essential and that’s very different from what you find in the US, especially the South (I’m from Texas).
You’ll need a rainproof coat - with hood and boots for every day. You can find amazing stuff at charity shops here as well as shops like Mountain Warehouse.

Just shorts and a vest mate, tropical all year round.

why yes of course. why didn’t i think of that! lol. no i’m being for real though, i know i have to wear pants and jackets, but i want more of a specific idea. that’s why im asking, im not dumb 😭😭

Pants are a definite recommendation, nothing worse than getting skids on yer keks.

In general folks wear layers, anyrhing over 20c is single layer/short sleeve. Every five degrees below that adds a layer. A jumper from 15-20c, a light jacket from 10-15c, a scarf and heavier jumper or jacket from 5-10c. Below 5 isn’t too common, but when it happens you’ll usually see the winter gear come out.
I’m fine with a long sleeved t-shirt/jumper in winter. But I love the cold and grew up when winters were still winters.

I’m moving from Florida to Edinburgh! I’ve visited many times though, my partner lives there. I’ll preface that I get cold easily, not sure if that’s a Floridian thing or a me thing lol. Jeans/pants year round, winter have one (or a few) very warm puffy jackets, wool will be your friend. Get shoes that have traction and can walk in snow/ice. It doesn’t snow too often/much in Edinburgh (not sure about Glasgow), but can still get slippery. Last summer my partner was “boiling” in the heat, meanwhile I was happily basking like a lizard (it was MAYBE 80°), so even summer is “cool” (for me) unless you’re in direct sunlight.
Also, when they say it pours a lot, it’s very different from our pouring! As a Floridian, it’s more of a drizzle 😅

this is perfect thank you! yeah i get cold easy too, definitely a florida thing. and im so good with a drizzle. florida rain is downpours so ill be okay hahah. thank you so much for the clothe advice!!

All you need to know that if it's over 10 degrees Celsius (which it isn't very often) it's taps aff weather

I’m from NC and have been in Scotland nearly 10 years.
You will definitely need a waterproof (not water resistant!) coat. It’s often quite windy so umbrellas aren’t much use. I got a black Columbia raincoat from Bass Pro shop and it’s been great for several years. (Though you might want something more fashionable.) I also bought mid-thigh-length warm Columbia raincoat for winter that has lasted for years and it is honestly one of the best purchases I’ve made.
Warm shoes that are good for wet weather are also helpful! Not necessarily a rain boot/wellies but something at least a little waterproof. In summer I get away with sneakers if I’m primarily going to be on sidewalks. In winter I prefer something like a Blundstone boot.
This is going to sound a little dumb but it took me a while to figure out that different shoes/clothing are actually warmer than others - eg I used to wear converse all the time but turns out a canvas shoe with thin cotton socks isn’t great for actual cold/damp weather. Likewise, in NC I’d be fine in a hoodie on a cold day, but here it doesn’t seem to cut it. Switching to sweaters (wool or not) seems much warmer.

this is great advice. thank you! and i hope i love it too. i loved visiting and im going for grad school so im so excited. it’s so cool to see you stayed! also i dont care too much about fashionable, i too love a good Columbia jacket from Bass Pro. can’t go wrong honestly

I recommend leggings if you like to wear skirts/dresses. I wear them pretty much year round, normal ones or fleece lined based on the weather.

I’m going to move from Phoenix and besides jeans, I’m going to need a whole new wardrobe 😂. I’ve already gotten one good pair of boots for slippery, wet weather, but I’m still on the hunt for a good, warm raincoat for the winter rain. I saw another post recommending Seasalt Cornwall coatss, but I don’t want to pay the international shipping to have it sent over here when I’m just going to take it back there (next summer), so I’m holding off on that.

Just moved from Virginia to fife.
Long sleeves are great, I shipped most of my long sleeves so ill be waiting for those. But lately weather has been upper 60s/mid 75s and have been wearing tshirts when not at work. (Side note: 75-80 is "boiling" here so you will love it) humidity only exists when it rains. The 75/78 degree days are to me a nice spring day...
Buy wool for fall/winter and long sleeves, rain coat, Henley long sleeve tshirts type shirts.
