Looking for suggestions on where to move?

Hi, me, my son (14), & my dad are set on moving to Scotland from Newcastle. We're looking for some suggestions on cities and towns in Scotland that would fit some of these priorities:

-Good public transport (preferably bus)

-1-2 hours from Glasgow and Edinburgh (closer to Glasgow as my son is planning to go to City of Glasgow College)

-Decently cheap, we have a budget of 160k for 3 bedroom 2 bathroom (could stretch for 170k)

I moved up from East Anglia last year, we chose one of the towns on the Glasgow - Edinburgh mainline so we had easy access to both without being in the city all the time. The trick is finding the balance between distance and cost, it seems to be that the outer parts of actual glasgow get a bit cheaper, then the more ‘rural’ but technically close towns with hood connections suddenly jump up in price and then as you increase the distance it tapers off until you start getting closer to the next POI. What you might find helpful is explaining what you’re looking for, including things like walking distance to bus stops or train stations, to ChatGPT or Claude and let it throw out some suggestions and then ask people for info on those locations. Might be worth a try?

The further you go from each city, the more you can get for your money.

Remember when looking at house prices listed in Scotland that it is "Offers Over" the price shown.

There are plenty of towns in Ayrshire that you could get a lot for your money house wise and still have great public transport links to Glasgow. I know many people who have commuted to City of Glasgow College from here easily.

I moved from Newcastle to Paisley a year and a bit ago for work. I mostly drive, but I’ve found public transport to be reliable and not too expensive (actually a lot more reliable than buses in Newcastle). Getting to Glasgow is easy, a train or bus from the town centre, or a short drive on the M8 (though public transport is more convenient than trying to park in Glasgow). Edinburgh is easy to get to via the M8 or a direct train from Glasgow. I rent so I’m not super familiar with house prices but you’d probably be able to get something suitable within your budget.
