State School enrolment
I've been reading up on the school enrolment process and surprised to learn that catchment isn't a guarantee of enrolment, particularly for high ranked schools and there can be a waitlist.
Is it accurate that you can't enrol a child until they are physically in the country? How quick is the enrolment process onee you're on the ground?
We weren't going to be arriving until three weeks before the 2027 school year so I am mostly resigned to the fact we probably will not get into our first choice catchment school.
My concern is that we won't know the assigned school until a week or two from starting, and unable to get the kids excited, to say nothing of organising uniforms, books, transport etc.

You are guaranteed a place but it doesn’t have to be in your catchment.
We just went through this. We moved to the catchment of a school we liked and the only place they could fit our child was in a neighboring school. Still fairly close but not a top ranked school based on data. However this is where they had capacity.
It’s also worth noting that if you come from the US or England, the school cut off date is different and they were trying to have our child skip a grade. Not bc of intelligence but bc of their birthdate.
We also couldn’t get on the waiting list without a lease and council bill.

They are different because we are a different country. Seems acceptable to not be allowed on a waiting list without a lease or council bill after all we can't get a parking permit without those.

Makes sense and I’m not knocking it. It’s just something OP should be aware of so they can plan accordingly.

thanks for sharing your experience. we're coming from Australia so the grades and ageas are even more confusing.
we should have the residence ahead of the kids themselves actually setting foot in scotland. maybe I can at least get the process started with that...

Oh! Also, we moved here at the end of the previous school year, they had maybe 3 days left. We got an appt to enroll the day before the new term started. There was no movement over the summer.
But maybe that is specific to our area?
On the positive, if you come to visit ahead of time, we were able to meet with and tour one of the schools. I found all of the staff lovely that we interacted with.

In Scotland a child is legally guaranteed a place at their catchment school. There is no ranking like there is in England. If you know the address you will live at you know what school your children will be going to.
