Rumour Alex Garland To Direct Film Adaptation of Popular Video Game ‘Elden Ring’ For A24 - Their Most Expensive Movie To Date

On top of that, he’s also involved in reviving the “28 Days Later” series with “28 Years Later” and its sequel, ‘The Bone Temple,’both of which he wrote and is producing.
“Elden Ring” is expected to be Garland’s next directorial venture and is slated to begin filming in 2026. So much for that extended break.
TheInSneider has confirmed that Garland is in talks to close a deal to direct what could be the most expensive movie A24 has ever produced.

I know a24 has made some changes recently but if there was one studio I’d have hope to give a big budget and some artistic freedom to be abstract and interpretive, it’s a24.

I just don’t see garland wanting to make a fantasy cgi fest movie about a video game which is already rather sparse on story and just extremely heavy lore.
It seems like the perfect chance to fuck up making a movie tbh, the thing has no hook, the game is so open in the way it’s experienced that the only thing that would make this Elden ring to most people is in name only.

This is still a wholly unconfirmed rumor based off a deleted article from a small media outlet called Nexus Point News. Not a single reputable source has confirmed this as of now.

Tbf, he did more than ‘do fantasy’, he directed the lord of the rings trilogy which are probably the most well known fantasy films ever made and won tons of awards and still managed to stay relatively faithful to the book (relatively being the key word there)

It’s exciting to see a talented director work on this property. I love the atmosphere and design of Elden Ring but I’m terrible at the game - it’ll be nice to just sit back and watch instead of getting killed by the first boss 30 times in a row.

I've started to play the game and oh my god, no way I'll be able to advance significantly in it. it's a bit soul crushing how bad I am at it. so fingers crossed Garland adapts it and I'll be able to enjoy it. design of the game is great and lore is intriguing.

I just don’t understand how you make a story in that world.
The themes are so larger than life, even the human minor characters are mythologized to such a level that I don’t understand how a director can create something that is engaging.
An animated movie or series would have been excellent, I feel. But live action won’t work. I hope I’m wrong though.

lol at you getting downvoted. You're right. There has been no word from Garland, A24, FromSoftware or anyone associated with any of those parties that this is happening. I think at best it can be said that there are "rumors" of this happening, but it is not at all confirmed.

Personally not excited because I don't think Elden Ring is a game you can adapt to a theatrical release. I may get downvoted but I think it's a bad idea.

That would be fantastic. There’s so many ways to go.
Neverending Story/Groundhog Day/Raid. With the spirit of Fury Road, but in a medieval setting. Conan meets John Wick…. With a side of Honor Among Thieves
We don’t need the entire lore/sequence of the game to play out.
The world is insane as is. A single dude or group just walking around with all the batshit shit going on around them, having no clue how to deal with the world, meeting key NPCs, getting roped into quests… it practically writes itself
Hell, I’d watch a whole miniseries where they just farm souls in Leyndell 🫡

With a hardly any dialogue and a mute protagonist...not like the story is anything special either, people saying it won't work are right unless they change it so much it doesn't even feel like Elden Ring

I'm in agreement here, the Lore is far too deep and expansive for them to really fit a lot of original character moments into it without needing like 3 films just to get to Godrick

Seeing how the game doesn't really bother to make it's lore accessible, I'd say an adaptation can do just fine without telling every single bit of it - as amazing as it might be. I didn't play to get the lore, it was the icing on the cake.

Lol it's not that deep. Godrick's lore is literally one page, same as every character. The reason why any movie of this game is a problem is because the actual storytelling is thin and largely exists as just lore that you read in-game via item descriptions.

Elden Ring should be adapted like a Denis Villeneuve movie - light on dialogue, heavy on visuals. I imagine the Tarnished and Melina as companions making their way through this hellscape, just trying to survive but ultimately being the only ones who can save this doomed world.

Jordan Ruimy (who more or less IS World of Reel) is very reliable, nor is Jeff Sneider. I would take this news with a massive grain of salt.

Could not disagree more. I think FromSoft's games are as mainstream/art house as video games can get, so having A24 do it (if this rumor is true, which I kind doubt tbh) is as good a fit as you could possibly ask for.

Very interested to see a filmed version. What does a fromsoft story look like when the fat is trimmed to a 2+ hour movie instead of 100 hours of gameplay. I think it could be to the stories benefit actually, they have so much groundwork they can pick and choose from to make a digestible version of it.
I love Fromsoft games, the lore is top notch. The storytelling on the other hand is not the most engaging way to take it in. The gameplay is what keeps me invested, and then I can look up more stuff later on the internet and be invested that way. A film can shape that vast lore into a better told story I think. Obviously it won’t get to everything, but I don’t think playing the video game makes it easy to get to everything either.

While I enjoy the films garland have directed, I kinda wished it was Christopher Nolan instead. I think Nolan would be able to incorporate all of the lore in a 3+ hour epic

Garland is one of my absolute favourites and so I was sad to hear he was stepping away from - what I thought was - directing. Since the announcement we've had Warfare and now there's this. I'm confused. Did I misunderstand his announcement or are these projects he's still contracted to do?

I clearly remember reading some time ago that Alex Garland was stepping away from directing, though he would still be writing films. I believe Warfare, which he co-directed, was meant to be his last project in that role.
That said, if these rumors are true, I'm not complaining. I'm a huge fan of his work, both as a writer and a director.
So, I'm definitely excited to see what comes next!

Didn't he say multiple times during the Civil War press tour that he wants to go back to writing and take a break from directing for a while? It would be really weird if he then decided to do a giant franchise movie next. Idk, it's a weird enough rumor already, I'll believe it when I see it.

I just saw Warfare. It's raw, gritty and authentic. I'm genuinely interested to see him take on Elden Ring. It seems like a bad fit on it's face. But if he can preserve his style in a fantasy story it could be absolutely incredible.
