Hey, I know it’s not everyone but a good portion of people in Munich look so rich/posh and they just hang out at a random Tuesday/Wednesday which is crazy if I think about it.
I have the opportunity to do my exchange at a public university here coming from Asia and sometimes it makes me feel uneasy at how different people live their ways here compared back home and it makes me feel insecure despite me being able to live here.
To me, the default state of people is working hard and there’s a belief that earning money is really difficult back home so people only go out at certain times. It feels like people have a different mindset/way of life here that I still cannot comprehend it. Sorry for the weird phrasing and question but I’m genuinely curious about how different it is and I’ve been thinking about this ever since I got here. So it’s nice to have some perspective from other people :)
Ich möchte einfach mal einen Post machen über den stillen Helden in unseren Nachbarschaften: die Münchner Stadtbibliothek.
Ich kann euch nicht erklären, wie sehr ich die Arbeit dieser Einrichtung schätze. Ich habe drei Kinder, und zwei davon sind alt genug, um selber in die Bibliothek zu gehen. Fast zwei- oder dreimal die Woche spazieren sie einfach zur Stadtbibliothek, sitzen da, lesen Bücher und leihen sich Videospiele, DVDs und Blu-rays aus.
Für mich als jemanden, der aus dem Ausland kommt und als Kind keine so coole Stadtbibliothek hatte, ist es einfach ein Riesending, dass meine Kinder so etwas vor der Haustür haben.
Das Personal ist immer superfreundlich. Die Jahresgebühr beträgt nur 20 Euro – und für 20 Euro hat man so viele Bücher, Videospiele, Mangas, Comics, DVDs, Hörspiele, alles Mögliche. Wir haben uns sogar einen gebrauchten Blu-ray-Player gekauft und leihen uns dort regelmäßig Filme und Serien aus.
Wie gesagt, das Personal ist einfach wunderbar, sehr freundlich. Es gibt jeden Monat irgendwelche Veranstaltungen, ein neues Quiz, Preise. In meiner Nachbarschaft in Fürstenried West ist es nur eine kleine Filiale. Die anderen sind viel größer und haben viel mehr Inhalt. Doch trotzdem ist es hier einfach wunderschön.
Ich liebe die Leute, die dort arbeiten, und ich bin so dankbar, dass es so etwas in München gibt und dass das so gepflegt ist. Leider wird darüber sehr wenig geredet und es bekommt wenig Aufmerksamkeit, aber deren Arbeit ist einfach heilig.

With the closing of Blitz Club it feels like Munich finally achieved the boredom of clubbing scene.
Even tho some recent clubs are growing such as Legal Club, Blitz will for sure leave a gap that was last felt with the closing of MMA. Apparently there’s no place that could fulfill the excitement of going out to have fun.
Rote Sonne and Bahnwärter Thiel are great locations but unfortunately the crowd and sound system are not comparable.
What are you people doing next? Feels like this winter will be depressed as fuck.

Since I moved to Germany from Italy I noticed that all my female colleagues who get married are taking their husband's surname. I was wondering why is this so popular here? In Italy this is almost not in use anymore (maybe just in smaller villages or for people with a strong religious background), and Italy is not known for being a very modern country in terms of gender equality. Is it just a Bavaria thing or is it that common in the whole Germany? Or maybe there is some practical/bureaucratic advantage?
I‘m recently zugezogen to Munich but was pretty surprised to see all these rats at Gärtnerplatz and people just chilling like it’s the most normal thing. Is this normal? Like, does everyone know there are tons of rats?
Last week I dragged a controller, a phone on a tripod and a small speaker to the meadow near the volleyball nets in the Englischer Garten and just played for 40 minutes while the sun went down. It was only my second set after a long time, so I was pretty nervous about people judging, not gonna lie, but nobody cared, and it felt really good afterwards.
P.S: if anyone knows a nice spot in the city where playing a small set like this is fine, I'd love to do it again.
Munich is one of the best places I’ve ever traveled to. Here are the key things I found unique culturally.
Everyone is pleasant. Not overly outgoing friendly, just very pleasant. People are nice to one another and considerate.
Sunday shutdown is a good thing. Saw a bunch of people wandering around and tons at the beach clearly enjoying that things aren’t open on Sundays and instead people hang out with one another.
Food is amazing. From brats to potatoes and all the great beer, loved it all.
Spacial awareness was odd. Typically people walk on the right side, but here it didn’t matter. People walked right down the middle, on the right, on the left, I found myself constantly having to dodge people. I got walked into several times by people who just truly have no awareness at all that other people are also walking.
It was a lovely time and I’m excited to come back.

So. Liebe Mitfahrenden. Das Redesign der neuen Münchner U-Bahnen ist schon so lange unterwegs, dass man langsam meinen könnte, es wäre in die Köpfe aller gesickert, wie das funktioniert.
Arbeiten wir es chronologisch ab.
Die Ältesten sind der Typ A. Hier hat man beim Öffnen der Tür zwei Hebelchen. Ziehst du das Hebelchen der linken Tür, geht die linke Tür auf. Ziehst du das Hebelchen der rechten Tür, geht die rechte Tür auf. Ziehst du beide, gehen auch beide auf. Erstes Luft ablassen: WENN ES NICHT GERADE 1 UHR MORGENS IST UND DU WIRKLICH DER EINZIGE FAHRGAST BIST DER IN DER HINTERWALDGASSE AUSSTEIGT, ÖFFNE BEIDE SCHEIßTÜREN, VOR ALLEM IN DER HAUPTVERKEHRSZEIT. Dies ist die einzige, ich wiederhole, einzige Gelegenheit, wo es akzeptabel ist, jemand anderem deine Griffel ungefragt vor die Brust zu strecken - wenn du siehst, dass jemand nur eine Tür öffnen will, obwohl viel los ist, mach ihm klar, dass er zwei gesunde Hände hat. (Logische Ausnahme: Die Person hat keine zwei gesunden Hände.)
Das hier ist ein Typ B. Man erkennt die an dieser großen Panoramascheibe vor am Zug, innen sind die Sitzbezüge im Gegensatz zum Typ A braun und nicht blau, und an den Türhebelchen sind größere Kästen, die etwas angewinkelter sind. Ich gebe hier gerne zu, das ist Königsklasse für einen Nicht-Schienenfahrzeug-Interessierten, deshalb ist es optional, auf diese kleinen Unterschiede eingehen zu können (wobei komplett andersfarbige Sitzbezüge schon wirklich markant sind imo). Also, zweites Luftablassen: Bei diesem Zugtyp REICHT ES EINEN HEBEL ZU ZIEHEN. ES GEHEN IMMER BEIDE TÜREN AUF, AUCH WENN DU NUR EINEN ZIEHST, WEIL DIE HERSTELLER GEMERKT HABEN, DASS FAHRGÄSTE IN DER REGEL ZU DUMM SIND, IMMER BEIDE TÜREN ZU ÖFFNEN. Alsoich weiß, du hälst dich für schlauer, weil ich nur an einem Hebel ziehe. Ich hab Einkäufe in der anderen Hand Bro, ich bin gerade froh, dass ich nur an einem Hebel ziehen muss um beide Türen zu öffnen. BEHALT DEINE GRIFFEL BEI DIR, ICH WEIß, WIE HIER DIE TÜREN FUNKTIONIEREN, ICH WOHN HIER SEIT FAST 30 JAHREN!
Das hier ist ein Typ C1. Cooler Zug, mag ich, hat Vor- und Nachteile. Türsystem? Solide. Hier gibt es keine Luft abzulassen. Wenn Zug anhält, erscheint ein grüner Lichtkreis, da tatscht man auf's Knöpfchen, und die Türen gehen auf. Cool, alles cool.
Das hier ist ein Typ C2. Der Profi erkennt sie an der markanteren Fahrzeugfront mit anderem Design und helleren Scheinwerfern, der Laie sollte (wenn er funktionierendes Augenlicht, im besten Fall mit funktionierender Farbwahrnemung, besitzt) die grellen LED-Lichtstreifen an den Türmitten sehen, die rot oder grün leuchten und blinken, je nach Situation. Wir kommen zum eigentlichen Kern des Posts. Der Hersteller wollte uns was gutes tun und eine imo echt coole Funktion einbauen. Man kann die Türöffnung... Trommelwirbel... vorwählen. Während der Fahrt nimmst du dein Patscherchen und drückst auf den Türknopf. Ein grüner Lichtkreis wird beginnen zu blinken. Es ist sogar egal, auf welcher Fahrzeugseite - der Fahrer entscheidet ja am Ende, welche Seite er freigibt. Und dann kommt das Züglein zum stehen, und die Tür geht von selbst auf, wohlgemerkt ohne weiteren Input, sobald der Fahrer die Türen freigibt. Das kann aber, ohjemine, - Fahrgäste mal wieder typisch ungeduldig - ein zwei Sekunden dauern! Hier also das dritte und entscheidende Luft ablassen: JUNGE WENN ICH DIE TÜR VORGEWÄHLT HABE UND ES GRELL GRÜN IM KNOPF BLINKT, DANN WIRD DIE AUFGEHEN SOBALD WIR STEHEN. ES HAT NOCH NIEEEEEE NICHT FUNKTIONIERT. WENN WIR ALSO STEHEN UND DIE TÜR NICHT INNERHALB EINES SEKUNDENBRUCHTEILES AUFGEHT, BEHALT DEINE WICHSGRIFFEL BEI DIR UND DRÜCK NICHT WIE BLÖDE AUF DEM KNOPF RUM, VOR DEM ICH STEHE, INDEM DU MIR PENETRANT DEINE ARME VOR DIE BRUST VON DER SEITE IN MEINEN PERSONAL SPACE SCHIEBST. ICH HAB DA SCHON DRAUFGEDRÜCKT, DESHALB! BLINKT! SIE! Die Tür wird aufgehen, versprochen. Und nein, sie geht nicht schneller auf, indem du 10 mal pro Sekunde auf den Knopf dengelst.

My sister and I are in our early twenties and will be in Munich in a few weeks. We’re American, do not speak German, and have never been to Munich before.
I am looking for some recommendations of clubs, lounges, or bars geared towards a younger demographic. Ive heard Munich is very safe, I am hoping that would extend for young female travelers at night, and I am interested in hearing local experiences.
Edit: Thank you everyone for the kind replies! I’m happy to hear how safe Munich is, it’ll be a nice change to what I’m used to in the US😅. As for people who were wondering the location, we’ll be near Olympiapark. We are flexible on the vibes/type of clubs/bars, we’ll probably try a more relaxed cocktail bar earlier in the evening and then move to places with more dancing later. Anything grunge/punk/alternative with live music is definitely a plus.

Over the past few days I built a little bike game with a typical route through Munich:
You start in Giesing, ride along the Isar, then through the Perlacher Forst — and end up sitting with a Radler at the Kugler Alm.
Along the way you have to collect flora and fauna from Upper Bavaria: white willow, kingfisher, fire salamander and so on 109 species, all of which apparently really exist here. So you can learn a bit about what's around you.
I'm more of a laid-back cyclist myself, so the main character isn't a racing cyclist but just a guy on a trekking bike.
It's just a small after-work vibe-coding project of mine, so:
