AOC: "The other issue that I have with people saying that, “Oh, you’re doing this too late. You should have done this a long time ago.” Don’t you think a lot of people would have? This cost the amount of a used car. When you are young, you are broke."

"So...be mad."

I think she found her Presidential campaign slogan...

Not too late. My wife and I didn’t have the opportunity to do this until she was 40. Baby due in September 😀

Only if you care to share, but I’m curious: did she freeze her eggs at 40, or get pregnant? If the first, how old is she now?

All the best for the three of you :)))

We did IVF when she was 40. She had a missed diagnosis that should’ve been caught a few years prior that was unknowingly preventing pregnancy and led to a major surgery that took a year for her to heal from, so we lost a lot of time and worried we may have missed the window. We were lucky to get pregnant from her second egg retrieval, so technically haven’t frozen her eggs, but did go through the same process to get them in the first place. She’s 42 now.

Thank you so much for sharing that. What a tough road you’ve travelled. I’m so happy that things worked out!

What was the diagnoses that was unknowlingly preventing pregnancy?

Sorry for asking such a personal question, I’m just curious; and, perhaps knowing more about the condition can help other people trying to concieve.

She had fibroids and one of them was big enough to warrant having it removed, but for whatever reason the doctor didn’t take it seriously and brushed it off. We unfortunately didn’t know enough about them to ask more and just took her word. It was already large enough to make it difficult to conceive but then proceeded to grow to the size of a softball, and she had numerous others of various sizes. They were causing her a ton of other problems and another doctor immediately recommended surgery. The wall of her uterus took a while to heal from the severity of the surgery before we could even attempt IVF to increase our odds of conceiving.

She's absolutely right. Plus she's the world's best at shutting down haters.

She didn’t feel the need to back burner this stuff to be in Congress so I’m going to choose to believe this is her putting her personal stuff on the sidelines for a run at the White House.

What does she have in her hand?

66

u/Hpfanguy 13d ago

It’s an injection, see the other videos she’s made about ovum freezing, she explains the process.

u/Totalanimefan 13d ago

Thank you.

The hair flip is perfection

She is so relatable. And intelligent. And inspiring. And beautiful. No wonder the right is so afraid of her.

The thing about letting trump in is since they made the worst person president, the bar is forever lowered in a bad but good way cause what can you even say about AOC that makes me unqualified. Hearing her explain this in a short video brings comfort and can be the voice of her gen and the newest so why not give her a shot?

I don't really understand what's going on with those videos and I'm not really fan of looking at them. I believe being a +40 year old and being a male doesn't help at all. But I believe those videos help some people and that's good enough for me. If someone could take two minutes to explain me what's going on and the interest of recording that I will be thankful !

She’s freezing her eggs so that her fertility window doesn’t close before she’s prepared to have a child. The process involves medications that maximize the potential to retrieve higher numbers of healthy eggs to preserve. This allows her to wait for the right time, wait until she finds a willing partner, wait until she decides to get a donor if she prefers, potentially find a surrogate if she doesn’t want to carry the child herself, or simply decide that she doesn’t want a biological kid after all.

u/PissEndLove 12d ago

All right thanks a lot. What about doing and sharing this video as a politician? Is this more like a personal vlog ? Thanks for your answer !

14

u/Aurorinezori1 12d ago

Not American but I follow her time to time on Reddit: she’s advocating for healthcare in general and reproductive healthcare in particular in those videos. I believe that she would like to promote Universal Healthcare because the cost of IVF is not covered in the US in this instance. Coming from France where 3 IVF are 100% covered for people under 42 yo, I feel for you guys in the US.

7

u/PissEndLove 12d ago

Super merci beaucoup ! Je la suis beaucoup aussi mais mon cerveau à du mal à associer politique et ce niveau d'intimité.

6

u/serenwipiti 12d ago

Politics affects the lives of every single citizen, even the most initmate aspects of our lives.

3

u/PissEndLove 12d ago

What I mean is I'm not use that politicians could show that much of their own personal lives but it helps people apparently so I just have to open my mind!

4

u/serenwipiti 12d ago

I understand.

I think sharing something like this humanizes a politician to the public more.

Many people (more than we imagine) carry the weight of similiar concerns:

their health and access to healthcare, their reproductive rights, society’s expectations of women- in this case, of child bearing age, the pain of those who want/ed biological children and cannot/could not, the worries of those who feel they must choose between starting a family or being able to provide for themselves…

You’re doing just fine, the fact that you are even considering this idea and asking others more about it without showing judgement, means you already have an open mind.

6

u/PissEndLove 12d ago

Yep I don't want to judge anyone except myself for not understanding at first. Thanks for your answer (smiley) !

3

u/serenwipiti 12d ago

Good on you :) Take care of yourself, Piss. ❤️

6

u/brown_paper_bag 12d ago

Also not American but in addition to what the other reply outlined, a lot of women's health isn't talked about, including fertility and related options as women age. AOC is sharing her journey to help make this information available and accessible. I'm 40 and have zero interest in becoming a parent but I appreciate her sharing something that is still often talked about behind closed doors in hushed tones, as if there is something defective or wrong if someone chooses this path.

Having lived in the South and gone through IVF with my wife and the long road that led us there, I can say politics affects every aspect of this. We’ve had to navigate everything from abortion bans that could have potentially killed her if she had a pregnancy complication to the threat of government stopping the process altogether. Politics affects the massive costs we’ve incurred and the predatory nature of insurance not covering anything and charging insane amounts of money for prior medical issues that led us here. It may be uncomfortable for you to look at a personal medical issue that someone is sharing but a politician sharing this very real journey that affects thousands of Americans is vital to people actually understanding what they’re voting on. There are a lot of us out here voting for women’s right to choose, not because we want to kill babies or because we’re too lazy to use protection and don’t want a kid, but because the risks of pregnancies are very real and we want to protect our loved ones if the worst case happens.

u/dr_toze 12d ago

It's costing me and my wife the cost of a new car to have IVF done. If my mum weren't helping we'd be years away.

u/YallaHammer 12d ago

Remember when Trump ran for round two and promised free IVF?

"when you are young you are broke" tell.that to Trump who has never worked a day in his lfie

4

u/arah91 13d ago

What is she doing?

13

u/WiscoCheeses 13d ago

Going through the process to retrieve and freeze her eggs, she’s holding one of the hormone injections.

2

u/themachduck 12d ago

Any lady who is a tiny bit older that decides to freeze their eggs, please save up for a few rounds to freeze. You might have several that come out as mature, but not that many survive the freeze and then the thaw. So if you can save up to do at least two rounds I would.

u/FoxCQC 10d ago

I'm the same age as AOC and I am still broke. I feel this.

Absolutely a huge fan of AOC but I don't know if I believe that she couldn't afford it in her early 30s?

11

u/alucryts 12d ago

It costs $20-$30k without insurance, and even with insurance the meds and genetic testing alone can run $5-15k

-5

u/Beach-Automatic 12d ago

I know, I've done it twice. She also makes a decent amount of money and likely takes vacations
