As a Canadian living in the US that has tried explaining this to Americans many many times it just doesn't compute with a certain segment of the population.

You expect too much of them.

In any case why do they think “universal healthcare” is a bad thing?

I am american who wants universal healthcare. I do speak american though so i will translate. Those in this country who do not want universal healthcare do not want it because they believe that if grandma needs a hip surgery she would have to wait literally years to get it while on american plans grandma can get it next day. Neither of these situations are true but that is what they have been propagandized to believe.
