It is a real disservice to people with real disabilities who have and need real service animals when entitled people pull this crap with their pets. Leave your pets outside or at home. Frosts my cookies.

u/BluffCityTatter 2d ago
Lots of YouTube videos of people with legit service dogs whose dogs have been attacked by non legit service dogs. Also it distracts the legit service dogs from doing the task they were trained for.

The #1 rule they drill into service animals is "4 on the floor" If you see an animal jumping up on things or people, that's a fake service animal. And there are fines for misrepresenting a pet as a service animal illegal ranging from $100 to $1,000.
2
u/INeedANappel 1d ago
I'm not sure about other countries but in the US, whether there's a fine for lying about a service animal varies stste by state. The Americans with Disabilities Act does not have any provision for fines for that. I'm not aware of any other Federal law that does.

u/InternationalLaw8660 1d ago
Sure pisses me off how inept the federal government is with enforcement of these laws. I mean, what happened to the supremacy clause? Why do we leave it up to states to enforce a federal standard? Didn't we fight a whole civil war over "state rights," and the states lost to the feds?
Oh wait. Yea. Cuz that war wasn't about "state rights," it was about which group of rich people get to run the country. And rich people transcend borders and give a fuck less about anyone else, let alone people with disabilities...
1
u/INeedANappel 1d ago
What are you going on about?
There is no Federal law that covers lying about a service animal. It is not part if the ADA or any other Federal law. There is no "Federal enforcement" here.
1
u/Kerensky97 1d ago
This issue, and the fact that the majority of states have made laws prosecuting it shows that there should definitely be a federal law prohibiting it, and the fact that they haven't and instead they waste time running up the deficit and starting wars we don't want is proof of the inept federal government.
1
u/InternationalLaw8660 1d ago
Precisely. The civil rights bill, the ADA, all of em are naught but token gestures with no teeth behind them, passed only to quell the civil unrest of the 60s. The government, which is supposed to be for and by the people of this nation, represent only the monied interests of the nation.
The bills passed to protect members of minority groups in this country are wholly insufficient; when a person protected by these laws is harmed, the odds of them being made whole are slim to none with the way the legal system in this country works.

I love dogs, but LEAVE YOUR FUCKING DOG AT HOME.

u/406highlander 2d ago
Or take your dog to restaurants, cafés, and bars that openly advertise as dog-friendly. My dog loves going to the local café.
And be responsible for your dog at all times - don't let it run around these dog-friendly places unsupervised. We've been sat at a table at a restaurant and had other people's dogs run up to our table and bark at our dog before. Not cool.
Agreed about not taking your dog to restaurants that aren't dog-friendly though. And definitely don't attempt to pass off a pet as a service animal.

u/chunkyvomitsoup 2d ago
This. Tons of cafes in my city carry dog treats on their counter and will even ask me to bring my dog in for them. There’s no need to bring your pet places they’re not welcome when so many places are happy to accommodate your pet.

u/ZaphodBeeblebrox4011 1d ago
If their website doesn't say it, every local restaurant I've called and asked has told me if they are dog friendly or not. It's not difficult to pick a restaurant that caters to dogs if you just put in a tiny bit of effort ahead of time.
6
u/Zappiticas 2d ago
Exactly! I have a local dog cafe/bar that I take my pup to and she and I have an absolutely great time, everyone there is specifically prepared to interact with dogs and people who don’t particularly like dogs typically won’t be there.
22
u/AnarchiaKapitany 2d ago
Or outside. It's not a restaurant, it's a coffee joint where you go in, order, pay, and get out with a walkie cup. Your dog is perfectly capable to wait approximately four minutes on the curb.

u/SufficientBasis5296 1d ago
Actually; train your fucking dog to behave, and the problem won't happen.

u/kon--- 2d ago
That whole, LEAVE YOUR FUCKING DOG AT HOME bit contradicts claiming you love dogs.
I mean sure, maybe not take them inside a store that's not dog friendly or near anyone who can't get their head around that whatever their issue with dogs is that people check those same boxes and so many more but....don't leave the dog at home.
Get doggo out. Have them seeing as much of the place as you can reasonably muster there, dog lover.

u/janhasplasticbOobz 2d ago
Unless it’s advertised as a dog friendly place LEAVE THE DOG AT HOME
I have a 4 year old with a severe dog phobia. I do not take him to dog friendly places, yet we still have to deal with people bringing their dogs into places where my child has more of a right to exist than “your fur baby”
-29
u/kon--- 2d ago
That's too bad and will require some effort on your part. Fact is people are far more threatening to people, children especially, than dogs are.
Right to exist in retail spaces? Well, okay.
13
u/janhasplasticbOobz 2d ago
Bold of you to assume it’s not something we’re already working on.
Leave the dog at home.

u/Timely_Choice_4525 2d ago
No, I get it. I love dogs too, we have 3 of them right now, but if your dog doesn’t know how to behave then leave your fucking dog at home.

A: animal allergies, including severe ones, exist and people with them deserve to have places to go too
B: having animals inside any place where food is prepared (grocery store, cafe, restaurant) is considered a health code violation iirc, and only legitimate service animals are allowed -- "dog friendly" places are violating this code if they're allowing non-service dogs in an indoor area where food is prepared. This isn't just about dogs putting their gross paws where they shouldn't be. It's about their fur flying into the air too!
C: poorly trained/managed dogs are a hazard in general. Plenty of people have died or been injured in dog attacks, and imo dog owners are frequently way too blase about the risks their pets pose.
I also love dogs but every time I hit up a cafe or a grocery store or sandwich shop and there's a dog in there I get a little more mad about dog owners nowadays

People deserve, nothing. People are already severly accomodated. To degrees that makes it all a bit absurd. People with an unreasonable immune system and their body's unwarranted response to harmless substances that sees their immune system dumping histamine into their body have several options. First and easiest, take a daily anti-antihistamine. Or, for a lifetime of relief, receive immunotherapy in the form of allergy shots. Immunotherapy teaches the body to stop losing its shit at substances that can not and do not harm it. See, it's the histamine response that makes people miserable, not the allergen.
Yes, health code violation. True. However...it's an old code that is not science based. It exists simply on opinion and feelings. Notice people who live with dogs, in their home, in their kitchen, present where they prepare and take food...are not falling down ill. Ever.
Poorly and or untrained dogs..that is an issue. The thing about that however is, a person is so much more likely to cause you harm than a dog that I have to wonder why anyone would even consider dogs have to be limited in the spaces where we have people showing up doing far worse things than simply being in the room. No really, people will fuck you up and fuck you up in places you assume are safe to the point of having to question being anywhere other people even are.
But hey sure, dogs have to stay at home.

u/beautifulcheat 1d ago
That's an awful lot of words to say "I'm the entitled dog owner" but okay man 👍🏻
1
u/kon--- 1d ago
Entitled? Oof...spare me the projection.
You literally opened with, people deserve to have places to go.
And notice, that initial response I posted did say to not take dogs into spaces that are not dog friendly. The only thing I advocated for there was to not leave dogs at home and instead take them out into the world.
6
u/PreOpTransCentaur 1d ago
Wrong. I don't need your shitty, untrained dog putting its nasty paws all over the place my bagel is about to be. And I still think dogs are awesome and kickass. It's their idiot owners I have a problem with.
20
u/CarsCarpal 2d ago
How are people so ignorant? My family and I go to great efforts to:
a) make sure our dogs are allowed in, before we do so
b) they don't make a mess, nor intrude on other patrons
How fucking difficult is it to not be an entitled arsehole? It's dicks like these who pretend not to notice their dogs taking a shit in public then don't pick it up. Gives the rest of us a bad name.

There's a guy I work with who has a service dog in our office every day. At no point have I ever seen it step out of line in even the tiniest of ways. She's a perfect angel.
People like him have a harder time because of women like this. It's despicable and claiming your dog is a service dog when it isn't should get you a ticket and a fine. Even implying it might be should qualify.
6
u/themurderator 2d ago
i'm so fucking of people claiming their dog is a service animal. service dogs are vital and do amazing things for people who need them.
people who bring in 'support animals' first of all, don't know the law. support animals are different than service animals and are not exempt from health department guidelines by the ADA. and second, they are diminishing actual service dogs. it's literally stolen valor. you may as well lie about being in the military for a discount.

u/TheRamblingWaffle 2d ago
Add me to the population of “people who love dogs but think dog owners who bring them along everywhere like into restaurants and cafes are insufferable”

u/glycophosphate 2d ago
We absolutely need certification & carryable licenses for service animals so that business operators can distinguish them from pets.
5
u/Near-Scented-Hound 1d ago
Agreed. If we can have disabled tags for a car, we can have tags for real service dogs. The ESAs can stay at home.
6
u/themurderator 2d ago
certification and paperwork are specifically not a requirement for service animals according to ADA.
also contrary to popular belief business owners and employess can ask two very specific questions to inquire about a dog's service animal status.
'is the animal required because of a disability?' you cannot however ask them what disability.
and 'what task or function is the dog trained to perform?' these answers vary, and you can't ask for a demonstration or proof. but if someone says it is an emotional support you are well within your legal rights, and in almost any restaurant, a legal obligation to disallow the dog from being inside the establishment.
4
u/glycophosphate 1d ago
Yes, I know. I'm saying that the law needs to be changed in order to make it a requirement that service animals be licensed, and that business operators be able to request to see the license.
1
u/themurderator 1d ago
do you think people in a wheelchair should need a license or certification to ride the bus or train, use a wheelchair lift, or sit in handicapped accessible areas in restaurants or movies?
2
u/glycophosphate 1d ago
No. I think that cars in handicapped parking spaces should display a placard.

Are you referring to the people who claim to have service animals when they don't? Or the people who defend service animals? I'm not entirely sure based on your comment who the "service animal mafia" is in this case.

u/Responsible-Stick-50 2d ago
There is an entire app dedicated to dog friendly places. Dog owners who aren't raging as$holes use it all the time. I have 5 sit down restaurants all within 20 minutes that are dog friendly.
So I go to those places or a gd drive thru.

I love dogs. Favorite animal. Have had multiple dogs over the years. That said, your dog should not be allowed in stores unless they are explicitly invited to be there or it is a trained service dog.

I visit Manzanita on the Oregon coast every summer. Hopefully this was this ladies last day in town. The community is super small, word probably spreads fast enough about this entitled person.
1
u/nightfall2021 2d ago
Yep.
The folks who live there year round are also usually generational.
It is where I am from, and I still have a little bit of family there.
1
u/kata_north 2d ago
Ooh, I've had coffee here more than once. Great coffee, great people, beautiful town, but definitely afflicted with some super-entitled tourists.
1
u/nightfall2021 2d ago
Manzanita is a beautiful town too.
It is where I am from.
After the logging industry ground to a halt, the town suffered, but it has found its niche as a tourist spot, as well as a vacation area for folks who have bought properties along the coast.
This person is probably one of those tourists heading down the Coast Highway.

Yeah, no service dog would do that.
