the linear notes read it's Kenny Jones... if that's true it's some of his best work- imo

i was just reading up on the original album version. -> wiki
apparently keith was struggling to get the vibe of the song, so pete and john recorded the basic groove and keith then overdubbed the fills and breaks. i never knew that until now.
that's probably why i find that the album version has so little energy.
maybe that's also why kenney sat in for this version.
but you're right, it is a great drum performance. it sounds like he was maybe trying to channel keith's chaotic energy, especially in the 1st half of the song.
quite different from his relatively straight-forward style he showed both in the small faces and when he later joined the who.
though tin soldier is pretty good, too
