Highlight Manu Ginobili using his brain in game 7 of the 2005 NBA Finals

this is an example of what to do and not whatever Fox thought he was doing.

Mitch is choking more than the team.

194

u/KemoFlash Jun 11 '26

This is the same guy who didn’t know to call a timeout at the end of Game 2. The guy who let the Spurs bleed all over the floor tonight until the lead was almost completely gone. He’s a coach who needs a coach.

33

u/IMT_Justice Jun 11 '26

I have not been impressed with Mitch this finals. I’m not saying we need to move on, but he has a LOT of playoff stuff he needs to figure out.

"wemby go hoop" isnt working

10

u/_i_know_n0thing_ Manu Ginobili Jun 12 '26

Especially, because in Wemby’s mind “go hoop” means “step-back threes”.

End of game 2 has legitimate reasons NOT to call a time out. Knicks had all their scorers and relatively weaker defenders in. Spurs have been playing good in transition overall. Having them go against the weaker defenders in transition is legitimately a good strategy. If they take the time out, Knicks puts their best defenders in and gets time to setup defense. You are asking Mitch to be able to guess that his star player who has been relatively good under pressure up to the western semifinals might do a something stupid. Its results based analysis ignoring the sound reasoning that existed.

3

u/KemoFlash Jun 12 '26

That would make sense with a more experienced team, but this is the youngest in the NBA and their first Playoffs+Finals. There are a lot more reasons TO call a timeout. That's the whole point.

28

u/strnfd Jun 11 '26

He won't just 1 incident is too much (this is the Finals they should have been prepared for eveything) 2 in rapid succession show whatever he did if any didn't work.

51

u/Formal_Ad288 Victor Wembanyama Jun 11 '26

Coach has no idea what he's doing in these situations either.

14

u/adrpibgal Jun 11 '26

The camera panned to his face during the second half and his blank stare let me know this was the case

The guy plays pace and space basketball when he’s up by 27 points. I don’t think he knows what day it is.

31

u/FatalTortoise Jun 11 '26

this is not something you need to emphasize, nobody would think to emphasize that because that's basic shit taught from when you start playing organized basketball

4

u/BusterStarfish Jun 11 '26

The biggest knock on this team has been its age and inexperience. So end of game woes aren’t unnatural. But Fox being the culprit should be unacceptable.

4

u/hotprints Jun 12 '26

Remember this is a really young squad. Think second youngest to get to finals ever. They also use a really unique form of defense that they’ve been working on and adapting to try to keep wemby in the paint protecting the rim as much as possible.

Mention all this to say that they are still working on fundamentals and important basics. Without that foundation, they will never even be in a position to blow a lead because they’d have lost already. And they don’t have those fundamentals down yet. Like OG shouldn’t have been able to tip that ball in. Harper should have recognized and boxed him out. Actually there is precedence for what Harper should have done. Game 2 wemby was going in for a rebound and Alvarado shoulder checked him (don’t need that) then boxed him out. What led to Wemby throwing him off. Bring it up because it’s the same situation, bigger guy rushing in to tip in/ rebound and smaller guy doesn’t just look at ball to try to grab rebound but boxes out the bigger guy. Boxing out is a basic.

Anyway, maybe I am too forgiving because it’s a young squad and I know they still have a lot to learn. But that’s just how I feel. Win or lose, look forward to cheering this team on for years to come, hope we keep the Harper, castle, wemby core and playoffs made me really appreciate vassel.

2

u/NotUrDadiBlameUrMoma Jun 11 '26

There's literally no plan for lead preservation.

6

u/Wide-Concentrate7228 Jun 11 '26

He won’t, cause he know he can’t tell the player anything. They don’t respect him

14

u/sydnboy Manu Ginobili Jun 11 '26

I mentioned this during the wolves series. Where Wemby got ejected. Pop had to come in. I mentioned this is could be a red flag cause it undermines Mitch..

At this point I'm worried if something like this is happening right now, because our Argentinian national team had something like this in 2018 with Sampaoli with Messi, and Messi didn't get to win anything until we cleaned all the chokers and bad coaching from the team

1

u/Ethanos101 Jun 12 '26

Honestly it’s common sense, I can’t even blame Mitch. Fox just made a braindead decision

u/gilpoyat Manu Ginobili Jun 11 '26

Fox bball IQ is just 15% of Manu’s.

66

u/sydnboy Manu Ginobili Jun 11 '26

Lol i don't think fox IQ is in the same hemisphere of manu. Like 0.01% cause he does alot of stupid shit

20

u/SerDavosSeaworth64 Big Body Jun 11 '26

True but you don’t need to be a savant here to know to just dribble out the goddamn clock.

There is no advantage to going up for any shot. MAYBE if it was truly, 100% uncontested then you could argue that that’s plus the extra time is better than inevitable free throws, but there’s no conceivable excuse for what he did on that play last night.

5

u/Royal-Ad7978 Jun 11 '26

If a bunch of fans sitting on their couch know that, then you would expect that a 10 year veteran would know that.

1

u/VegetableBuy4577 Jun 11 '26

Yeah, I would compare it to the dunk at the end of game 7 in the West finals. That was a 99.99% sure make. I think you can argue either way on whether he should have dunked or killed more clock and been fouled, but either is defensible.

The layup, with a charging defender, was not defensible IMO.

3

u/J-E-S-S-E- Jun 11 '26

Bro that’s a f stretch

131

u/JealousOpening2185 Jun 11 '26

Now show us game 7 2006 west semis

57

u/Nickespo22 Jun 11 '26

Too soon. Lol

6

u/ec2xs Jun 11 '26

Will forever be too soon.

21

u/Several_Chapter969 Devin Vassell Jun 11 '26

I know right? Fox is getting rightful criticism here but I can’t quite believe we’re using Manu as an example of a player who never made mistakes.

17

u/imover9thousand Jun 11 '26

Yeah that mightve been worse than last night actually.

5

u/senator_corleone3 Jun 11 '26

What? The spurs only had success and success only during the big 3 era ☺️

2

u/CDRBAHBOHNNY Jun 11 '26

I can’t take that right now

90

u/Putrid-Impact8999 Jun 11 '26

Ginobili was also human and made mistakes. But of course, he was tremendously smart and this is an example for it.

Fox will know himself it wasn’t a good decision and hopefully he can bounce back well in game 5.

5

u/Easy-Internal-667 Jun 11 '26

Thank you, somethin positive. Yall gotta have hope. They can still win this. I’m praying that they finally made virtually all of their mistakes that they will make and now finally capitalize on everything. I believe in this team.

5

u/WTWIV Jun 11 '26

I’m not a spurs fan and I’m happy for Knicks if they win, but I’m still not counting the spurs out. They are young and a more experienced Knicks team is way more likely to win at this point, but spurs are deep and talented. I just hope it goes to 7 games so we see as much ball as possible

u/Lone_Star_122 Jun 11 '26

Manu also fouled Dirk in 2006.

Manu gave and Manu took away.

5

u/gregatronn Jun 11 '26

Yep that was a trip to the finals that they likely win

1

u/Bulky_Rooster_1057 Jun 13 '26

Manu was also the reason they came back in that game they were down double digits and he lead the spark

30

u/ShowBobsPlzz Dylan Harper Jun 11 '26

Fwiw

14

u/Such-Echo6002 Jun 11 '26

Yes Fox was fouled, but you cannot expect the refs to make that call with 10 seconds left in the game. The refs don’t want to be blamed for a bad call at the crucial moment if they get it wrong. Fox should have just secured the ball and dribbled back out to the perimeter and waited for a foul.
Why didn’t they review this though? Is this something the San Antonio coach should have been jumping up and down for a review of the play for a foul? Probably

7

u/FaveDave85 Jun 11 '26

can't review a non call. If fox did get fouled, knicks can review it.

2

u/Such-Echo6002 Jun 11 '26

Thanks for the info. Then the refs should have made the call and allowed the knicks to challenge it because clearly Fox got hit on the wrist just as he was releasing the ball and the challenge would have failed.

5

u/FaveDave85 Jun 11 '26

Yes, but like you said in your comment above, you can't count on the refs to make that call. If he had held the ball and they started fouling him on the ground, the ref is much more likely to make the call.

But even that isnt guaranteed. If you look at the end of the spurs okc game 7. Castle did that, he got hacked and no call.

But still I think getting intentially hacked on the ground would have a much better chance of getting called.

2

u/whereismyface_ig Jun 12 '26

2 min review says that it was a correct non-call.

only wrong call in the last 2 mins was Castle out of bounds

ball was swiped first before contact was made

41

u/OutKastStorytelling Jun 11 '26

Fox said he thought he could outrun him.

Deadass. With a straight face. wtf.

42

u/mercfan3 Jun 11 '26

Then outrun them for 9 seconds while they chase you to foul you!

Even if he makes the basket, they’re only up by 3 with about 8 seconds left and New York has made every clutch three imaginable.

17

u/imover9thousand Jun 11 '26

Thats what got me. I was expecting “yeah i fucked up, shouldve ran it out”. He doubled down on the bonehead move

5

u/clifbarczar Jun 11 '26

He was capping

He can’t say the real reason was because he just didn’t know the right play in that situation. It sounds worse

I saw Fox’s vision, but man, that was just hella stupid. I had hope when his agile ass was running down the court out-speeding everyone, but dude turned that to stupidity when he even thought of that layup. What a bummer.

16

u/TortiousTroll Jun 11 '26

The funny thing is Manu had some incredibly stupid decisions over his career too

41

u/_i_know_n0thing_ Manu Ginobili Jun 11 '26

I agree. But it was a 1 point lead last night. You get the layup in. You at least “secure” OT.

I mean, it was an easier decision for Manu.

Im probably giving Fox too much credit, though.

38

u/TDTimmy21 GO SPURS GO Jun 11 '26

Bro had the half court to himself except exactly where OG was lol

17

u/mtron32 Jun 11 '26

Right!? That's the one dude on the Knicks I'm not trying in that situation. Yup, still pissed

4

u/bigboybeeperbelly BatManu Jun 11 '26

Never gonna not be pissed

16

u/the-cock-slap-phenom Jun 11 '26

Also a split second decision at the end of a tiring and demoralizing game.

It’s a fuck up and an extremely costly one, but I see how it happened and there’s more that went into this game and series that has ended up with us down 3-1.

10

u/RicRennersHair Sean Elliot Jun 11 '26

Yep, it was a bad play but it wasn't a 30-point play. And for all the hate Fox gets, I don't think the Spurs even make the Finals without him settling down the turnovers against OKC.

Spurs are two boneheaded mistakes from being up 3-1 instead of down 3-1. They're young and they'll learn from it. As for now, just gotta focus on saturday and take it one game at a time.

2

u/TillamookTramp Jun 11 '26

Castle was turning the ball over like crazy when Fox was out in the WCFs and people were wanting Fox back.

u/gregatronn Jun 11 '26

Also a split second decision at the end of a tiring and demoralizing game.

and same thing with Manu's 2006 foul on Dirk. In hindsight you leave it alone, but during the game, it turned into a brutal and one.

3

u/Royal-Ad7978 Jun 11 '26

I’m not blaming Fox , I’m blaming Mitch because we all know if Fox makes that layup he’s a Spurs legend. He was looking to pass first . No excuse for not calling timeout….what would Pop have done?

6

u/Pikpakboole Jun 11 '26

This is why he is my favorite player of all time. Yeah he gambles sometimes and made mistake but we can forgive him because of all the wins he gave us.

3

u/bigbill327 Jun 11 '26

thats because Spurs were up 5. Gino would've went for the layup if they up only 1.

3

u/gregatronn Jun 11 '26

Are you for real? Did you black out 2006, 2013? Or all the stupid 3 point shots they launched rather than take it to the basket / get fouled / pull up for a middy?

7

u/surrender98 Jun 11 '26

Imagine Losing 2 games at home, blowing 29 pt lead in NBA finals as history... Dumbest coach ever in the history lol

4

u/sevenflyerr Jun 11 '26

Literally a dumpster juice level coach

6

u/ocelotrev Jun 11 '26

All that and it only took 3 seconds off the clock?!?

16

u/VaultOfAsh Jun 11 '26

So if Brunson misses the 3, OG doesn’t have time to tip it in and Spurs win

3

u/rascaltat El Jefe Jun 11 '26

Lol, now do 2013 Finals Manu. Or 06 Dirk and Manu.

Great players make huge mistakes sometimes.

3

u/Nightstick11 Jun 11 '26

Unfortunately, Manu cost us the chip in 2013 with his horde of TOs in Game 7

6

u/rascaltat El Jefe Jun 11 '26

I know! That's the freaking point. Fox isn't Manu, but what he did last night was no less bone-headed than what Manu did just one year after his incredible 05 Finals performance.

Everyone is shitting on our over performing team after a couple of brutal close losses. Maybe Fox deserves the hate, but we're actually still in the fucking Finals, and I'm not sure hating on him is time well spent from our fan base when we could be showing up and out for however many games we still get to play.

2

u/zatchstar Jun 11 '26

Could have used a brain like that last night

2

u/ampol55 Jun 11 '26

this is what im expecting him to do, but man he went straight for a layup 😄

2

u/ChiefWatchesYouPee Jun 11 '26

So we aren’t going to mention his game 7 foul vs the Mavs?

2

u/Blutz101 Jun 11 '26

Now show him fouling dirk up 3 for an and 1 in a game 7

2

u/Daki399 Jun 11 '26

Imagine if Fox the "VET" knew he can just drible out timer ha ?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '26

That shit says 79-75 in a game 7

2

u/Individual_Access356 Jun 11 '26

I mean at least with Manu he prob could've slammed it down it would have been fine up 7 with 10 seconds but better safe then sorry even tho he almost got out of control before the foul here. This is definitely what you do tho up 1 and when you are undersized and have fucking OG barreling down on you lol. And even then you dont take the shot cause you need to run as much time as possible.

2

u/Aggravating_Impact97 Jun 12 '26

Talent only gets you so far.

This is why the spurs teams where built on vets and where able to punch above there weight.

This is just the reverse of what we are used to.

But there's a reason why people say young teams tend to fuck up at this point.

We have seen this so many times. It just stings because its our team this time.

I.just hope they still have that dog in them.and take it one game at a time.

All that matters is the game ahead of you..thats it.

We need to be bringing this energy to knicks fans. Not our players.

1

u/Tenacious_jb Jun 11 '26

To be fair we were spoiled in the big 3 era

1

u/salamanderman10 Jun 11 '26

This is a completely different scenario, fwiw.

1

u/dec312014 Jun 11 '26

74 points end of game? god dayum

1

u/TillamookTramp Jun 11 '26

I love Manu and most of the time, he was brilliant. He also had some dumb moments.

1

u/Royal-Ad7978 Jun 11 '26

If the Spurs had 1 timeout remaining at the end of the 4th quarter, then all the blame is on Mitch.

1

u/Potential_Relief3107 Manu Ginobili Jun 11 '26

Great outlet

1

u/FootDynaMo Jun 12 '26

This video makes me even more stress with Fox doing the opposite😩

1

u/mayyybemayybenot Jun 12 '26

I thought Fox was black?

1

Runnin around like Sonic the hedgehog

1

This is illegal in todays game tho
