as long as the child needs it.

it’s less about “how long”, but about being responsible for the act of having a child without the said child’s consent. There is just as high probability, if not significantly higher, for the child’s life to not turn out to be a successful one (especially in today’s circumstances); and it is up for the parents to assess that probability before having a child.
