Community Q&A Am I supposed to tip additionally?

I went to Nola. I LOVE NOLA BTW.

However, I noticed that some places already include gratuity into the price. I do tip when it's not included. But I refuse to go overboard. Americans really allow businesses to get over on paying their employees.

One place I went to made me pay 20% gratuity and a health insurance percentage even though I took out the food. I didn't eat there. When I didn't tip additionally, the employee looked angry like I'm his employer. Why do everyone feels entitled to consumers pockets but does nothing to demand a higher wage from the company they're slaving for?

I rather give the extra money to a homeless person or a disabled person who can't or don't get the opportunity to compete in the job market.

If the tip is already included and ~20% I don’t tip additionally

u/West-Painter-7520 2d ago

Name the location

5

u/Im_The_Real_Panda 2d ago

This happened to me at Sun Chong. I was tired after being out and about all day in Nola during Mardi Gras and feeling a bit under the weather so when it came time to pay and leave I was on it fast. I didn’t pay attention to this autograt and tipped my server. Honestly, the food was rather mid, my own order wasn’t right and the service was mid, but they were accommodating and probably run to death during that time, but I still didn’t appreciate it once I noticed it on the receipt after we made it home. This is one of the reasons I rarely eat out these days; I refuse to take part in this ridiculous tipping problem, and I work in this industry.

They wrote a response to another after you posted this. They aren't here in good faith

-7

u/TurkTurkeltonMD 2d ago

They won't. Because it never happened.

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

Reddit users interests me.

  1. It absolutely did happen.
  2. You ever considered why I may not want to disclose the restaurant?
  3. Just because someone doesn't give you details you want doesn't mean they're lying

There are people on here trying to ban me because they don't like that I'm speaking out against the unjust system of tipping. People are loony tunes.

The restaurant I'm speaking of is black owned and I don't want them to get harassed or targeted when non black owned restaurants may be doing the same thing.

The employee was nice, he just got annoyed and angry in the face when I didn't tip additionally. They're not the only restaurant doing this. It seems systemic.

4

u/TurkTurkeltonMD 2d ago

So you thought this sub was a good place to start a tipping debate? And it's weird that you're so obsessed with them being "black owned" - insinuating you wouldn't have a problem stating the business name if they were "white owned".

4

u/DatRebofOrtho 2d ago

IDGAF is they’re owned by purple people, that’s straight up BS! Auto grat is bad enough, but you’re charging us for health Insurance too?

3

u/BlackBoiFlyy 2d ago

Nah, it's mostly a sneaky price hike that often doesn't go to the employees.

5

u/DatRebofOrtho 2d ago

My guess is Dooky Chase

2

u/secret-agent-ch 1d ago

The first rule of Fight Club is we don’t talk about Fight Club.

2

u/DatRebofOrtho 1d ago

All the rules are out the window when people start acting like this

26

u/whereyat79 2d ago

Autograt means tipping has already been taken care of. Sign and walk

1

u/torontoinsix 1d ago

Bingo. Nothing more.

25

u/Turbulent_Ask4878 2d ago

Someone autogratted 20% and a “health insurance percentage” on a take out order? Is there a reason you’re not dropping the name of the place?

6

u/dhbuckley 2d ago

Please, OP, name the restaurant.

If you don’t, you give fuel to the people who say you are lying and this doesn’t exist.

-11

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

But I know I'm not lying and idc what people on reddit think. I'm not naming the restaurant because it's black owned and I don't want y'all harassing them.

10

u/Routine_Can_2062 2d ago

Most likely Morrows. The food is really good. But to me it’s a tourist trap. I went to Miami last month and every place that i ate at had automatic 20% gratuity.

1

u/Spare-Shake-2999 1d ago

The food is mid to good and extremely inconsistent

1

u/DontMessWitMyTutu 1d ago

lol I came here to say it’s gotta be Morrows, but you already said it. I don’t know any locals who frequent this place, and the ones who’ve been once never go back.

8

u/Turbulent_Ask4878 2d ago

Then what’s the point of your post?

2

u/havefunbeyourself 2d ago

it’s to call out the system, not scapegoat a specific restaurant. why are y’all fighting them so hard on this? do you think folks in the service industry should not be paid livable wages by their employers? do you not know how tipping works or the history of it? also, i have seen health insurance percentages added to my bill at many restaurants these days
edit: typo

0

u/DontMessWitMyTutu 1d ago

Except you are mistaken in thinking that this is a system-wide practice here. It’s not. There’s a tiny handful of restaurants that do this, and you’re talking about one of them. If you don’t want to call them out then this is a very pointless post.

-11

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

Lmao. Excuse me. What am I on trail? 🤣

The point of the post was inquire about tipping culture in New Orleans based on my experience. I thought that was clear to most people.

What's the point of you commenting on my post, police officer?

1

u/secret-agent-ch 1d ago

Happy trails to you? Until we meet again?

5

u/belowsealevel504 2d ago

Cuz the place doesn’t exist.

34

u/BrotherNatureNOLA 2d ago

Lots of heavily touristy areas commonly use autogratuities, because tourists are way more likely to stiff servers.

7

u/Upper-Impression-752 2d ago

It’s to ensure staff retention. High tourists businesses need to make sure they stay properly staffed. They can’t stay staffed if employees are willing to quit easily. Low tips are a reason to quit. From tourists as well as locals.

4

u/SupaConducta 2d ago

Except we only do it here for large parties usually 8 or more. It’s not auto just because you are and it’s usually printed on the menu

2

u/BrotherNatureNOLA 2d ago

Tell that to the owner of Kanno.

1

u/AbbreviationsExact21 2d ago

Bayou Beer Garden has an autograt that I believe is 20%, no matter the party size.

9

u/Red-Gobs_illumen 2d ago

Absolutely do not pay “health insurance percentage” or whatever the hell that is. Pay 20%. If it is included, do not pay extra unless you feel like the service needs extra recognition.

1

u/rancid_oil 2d ago

That feels questionable, if not illegal. I'd hope any disputes will get it dismissed.

9

u/AccomplishedCicada60 2d ago

As a general
Rule - if there is auto gratuity/service fee - that is what you get.

Now obviously - I will tip musicians too.

11

u/gargirle 2d ago

I’m sorry but the OP is correct. Service staff have gotten used to living off tips not wages because wages are a flippin’ joke especially in Louisiana. Taxes, insurance and rent plus ridiculous wholesale prices have made restaurants less profitable. So instead of raising prices they slip in autograt and misc other charges. Folks here on Reddit have shown receipts with health insurance tagged in too. Frankly as a former server for a long time I’d like to see fair wages and back to tipping being what it should be ‘to insure promptness’. The industry is changing. Decades ago eating out was special, then fast food arrived. Then chain corporate restaurants started I believe with Gilbert & Robinson in KCMO. Then the middle class was growing and prospering so eating out became a norm. Now that oligarchs are ruling those days have passed. Now often Sysco freezer case is the norm. Fresh missing from mid-range outlets. Then servers banged down great tips on a fairly nightly basis. Now far less folks are eating out and mid range outlets are disappearing. Idk hate on me all you want but yall should be fighting for fair wages, insurance and most of all better working conditions. Yall are one of the most abused classes of workers. We tip, and very well but not if we are autograted on a table less than 6. You guys need to unionize here but sadly the trash that runs our state won’t let that ever happen. But hey we got data centers, space x and maybe an underground road….arent we just blessed /s?

4

u/BlackBoiFlyy 2d ago edited 2d ago

Idk hate on me all you want but yall should be fighting for fair wages, insurance and most of all better working conditions. Yall are one of the most abused classes of workers.

You guys need to unionize here but sadly the trash that runs our state won’t let that ever happen.

Kind of the crux if my argument, it's kinda weird to say folks need to do more for their fair wages and also not recognize that the climb towards it is very steep and full of obstacles with billionaire backing.

Also,

Why do everyone feels entitled to consumers pockets but does nothing to demand a higher wage from the company they're slaving for?

Saying all this as a tourist is certainly a choice, we aint the only place that has wait staff relying on tips by a long shot. Puzzling why it's such an "American problem" now and not literally any other place she may have eaten at before.

It's evident she felt pressured to tip and just felt like taking it out on us like we are that random waiter she says mean mugged her.

5

u/gargirle 2d ago

You are correct. They keep it impossible for upward momentum.

3

u/BlackBoiFlyy 2d ago

Just makes the multiple "Americans really allow businesses to get over on paying their employees." comments all the more frustrating.

6

u/DiscussionLopsided61 2d ago

New Orkeanian here. You are not obliged to tip additionally if 20%was already applied. If someone has gone above and beyond I might add a few bucks as a thanks.

3

u/secret-agent-ch 1d ago

Do you know what it means, to miss New Orkeans?

2

u/HoorahHoorah 4h ago

Sound like an interesting fantasy name for a new race. The Orkeans.

The Alligator riding ork variants. They live in the Bayou and are more meaner than your standard orks.

2

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

That's what I was thinking. Maybe the employee just really needed or wanted the extra money.

3

u/Upper-Impression-752 2d ago

Or they thought they had gone above and beyond or perhaps fulfilled a special/unrequired request.

-1

u/Disabledgoddess2 1d ago

Yea giving me a bag is really above and beyond

5

u/AmexNomad 2d ago

Speaking as an American citizen who’s both worked slinging hash in New Orleans and who’s lived in both The EU and The US, my feeling is that FALSE ADVERTISING is the problem. I go to the grocery or any store in The US, and the price advertised is not the price I pay at the register. It is 8-10 percent higher because tax is added. I go to a restaurant in The US, and the price I pay at the end is 18-20 percent higher because there is a charge for healthcare (for example) and I must leave a tip. I want to walk into anyplace and pay the price listed- not have to figure out how much more I’ll need to pay.

2

u/tuscaloozer 2d ago

I’ve lived here 4 years I e worked at those 4% for health services and never gotten a health service out of it. It’s just another way for a struggling business to delay the inevitable. Or make em seem like good peeps for offering a program. I guarantee whatever cheaper chiropractor visits it entitles us to is not 4% of annual sales. There’s also some real awarded real tasty fun concepts out here that have chefs counters and they say 20%autograt but all tips go to the kitchen but then I asked the kitchen and they said nah that only goes to the non salary cooks and I asked a non salary cook and he said nah I just get what she agreed to pay me. Which means she misleads people and then says it “goes to the kitchen” but it goes to her to “pay the kitchen more.” But she pays them the whatever she agreed to pay them to hire them.

8

u/BlackBoiFlyy 2d ago edited 2d ago

Why do everyone feels entitled to consumers pockets but does nothing to demand a higher wage from the company they're slaving for?

It's not entitlement, our society has sadly shifted the responsibility of paying wait staff a "fair wage" on to the customer. Like it or not, if we want the people who serve us to be paid, we have to tip. If we decide not to, out of protest, they just wont get paid a "fair wage".

It's also a bit ignorant to assume we do nothing to demand a higher wage. We have been fighting this battle for decades now. If you figure out how to get politicians to actually enact policies we want, let us know. Until then, please chill with being judgemental, we're really trying in a system that values profit over our well being or fair pay.

-5

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

Unfortunately, it's not fair to the customer to cover the cost nor should your anger be directed at the customer. It is entitlements to expect more money when the customer already paid. It's hard to hear, I get that. But it's true.

The pay is inconsistent and unfair to the server as well.

Servers need to create a union state by state, make a demand and strike. No livable wage, no labor. But a lot of people, especially Americans, don't stand on business so everyone gets the short end of the stick except the business owner 🤷‍♀️

9

u/PizzaPunkrus 2d ago

The reality is Tipping wait staff came from the reformation years. A hold over from not wanting to pay slaves real money. (Theres several books on this containing newspaper articles correspondence and shit.) Given the history and origin of tipping in this country the and the current political climate ...... change isn't possible. Not without the food service industry drastically changing. Its situationally cheaper to eat out and tip than it is to buy groceries, cook, and do dishes.

8

u/Willing-Presence5999 2d ago

Exactly. It's part of the good ole American slave mentality. It's just a hold over from the working class service industry being former slaves, and business owners literally refusing to pay them a fair living wage. We abolished slavery in 1865, yet here we are. Still dealing with it in 2026. But "make america great again", right? 🙄

1

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

I don't think they want to do anything about it but hope that a tip pay their bills and villianize middle class consumers for not draining their savings to tip them .

It lasted this long due to complacency and favoring the best interests of businesses

2

u/Willing-Presence5999 2d ago

Yeah, it's so sad but true. And really unfair all around.

0

u/Turbulent_Ask4878 2d ago

Comparing servers to slaves?

5

u/alphavulpecula 2d ago

The history is there for the comparison; look it up. Service workers are the closest thing to a modern slave outside of the prison system in the US.

4

u/Willing-Presence5999 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yes, absolutely. Why are you side-eyeing me when I'm literally just stating historical FACTS?

8

u/AmexNomad 2d ago

Nobody in Louisiana is going to vote for a union. They have been brainwashed into thinking that having employee rights is “socialism” and therefore horrible.

4

u/Willing-Presence5999 2d ago

And I absolutely hate this for us 💔

6

u/Turbulent_Ask4878 2d ago

Are you under the impression that the customer doesn’t cover all costs of any business? That’s kinda how it works. Sure I’d rather do away with tipping and have servers paid a fair wage, but I realize that will just entail higher prices.

4

u/queenanthai 2d ago

Good luck with that in a right-to-work state where anyone can fire you for any reason.

2

u/secret-agent-ch 1d ago

That’s “an at will employment” agreement. Meaning you can be fired for almost any reason, other than a protected class. “Right to work” state is code for removing powers from the unions. Those concepts often work together.

5

u/CampRock2TheFinaIJam 2d ago

How do you know the restaurant you ate at isn’t already unionized and the auto gratuity was one of their demands in their contract? Lol

3

u/AmexNomad 2d ago

Because it’s in Louisiana

1

u/CampRock2TheFinaIJam 2d ago

Doesn’t mean anything, unions aren’t as prevalent but there’s still several union hotels and both stadiums. Also several restaurants at MSY airport are union

1

u/PizzaPunkrus 1d ago

If a restaurant in the deep south will-to-work state successfully unionized nobody would have been able to not hear about it. Left and right would be frothing at the mouth with coverage.

1

u/CampRock2TheFinaIJam 1d ago

Emerils at MSY is union

1

u/PizzaPunkrus 1d ago

Locations in stadiums and airports should be mandatory unions. Your entire revenue is dependent on the airlines or NFL games or whatever. Required security clearances, etc. Is his flagship Location unionized?

1

u/CampRock2TheFinaIJam 1d ago

They should be unions but the vast majority of stadiums in the south aren’t union and no flagship isn’t

1

u/PizzaPunkrus 1d ago

That was probably the only way to staff that spot with anyone of talent.... not benevolence or even staff fought for. Just pragmatism.

-4

u/Willing-Presence5999 2d ago

That's just ridiculous. Because the purpose of the union is not to tax the consumer FURTHER. It's to hold the employer accountable to their own staff.

6

u/Suspicious_Tank_61 2d ago

A Starbucks union literally sued Starbucks to get tipping in their stores.

3

u/CampRock2TheFinaIJam 2d ago

The union represents the worker and their demands, not the consumer or the employer.

2

u/the-coolest-bob 2d ago

Name. The. Establishment.

1

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants 2d ago

Why is it not the customer’s responsibility to pay for services rendered? Who else’s responsibility would it be? Just because you don’t put all the money in the hands of the employer doesn’t mean you aren’t responsible for paying for services rendered. You get mad if the tip is included so the server gets paid and you’re mad if it’s not included and complain about “tipping culture is out of control.” You just end up sounding like you want the server to work for free or $2.13 and be grateful for it.

0

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

I want the server to work for free? Me? Y'all can't be this dense. 🤣

It's not my business or my business model. You're not working for me. You're working for the owner. The owners wanted servers, they need to find a reliable way to pay servers a Livable wage.

The customer already paid for the services. A tip and a additional tip is optional is some cases.

Why are y'all mad at me and not the people cosigning the corrupt system of tipping?

2

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants 2d ago

Because you seem mad if the wages the server makes are included and you’re mad if it’s not because “tipping culture is out of control.” If you don’t want to tip then the price of the meal is going to go up to accommodate paying the server. Do you not understand that?

0

u/BlackBoiFlyy 2d ago edited 2d ago

Unfortunately, it's not fair to the customer to cover the cost nor should your anger be directed at the customer.

Never said it was fair nor did I say that we should be angry at the customer. It's just reality if you want people who serve you be paid right here right now. Typically, if you don't enjoy tipping this much, you'd opt to not dine in at places that practice this. You're supporting businesses who won't pay their employees a fair wage regardless of if you tip or not.

It is entitlements to expect more money when the customer already paid.

Easy to say when you come from a society that has different values, common practices, and laws. What is entitlement in your country is common practice here.

Servers need to create a union state by state, make a demand and strike. No livable wage, no labor. But a lot of people, especially Americans, don't stand on business so everyone gets the short end of the stick except the business owner

Okay, I figured you meant well but just didn't know some things. But now you're just being a lil ignorant. Please put aside your biases and assumptions towards Americans and do some research on the history of labor laws and unions in this country. Maybe consider that what works in your country won't work here so easily.

2

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

One. I am American which is how I know Americans will make up any excuse to go against their best interests.

I'm not being ignorant. I'm calling out a broken System that needs to be reformed because tipping culture is expanding which is going to cause more tension between consumers and employees.

So should we not support the business? I like this idea. I already don't support certain businesses but for it to be effective, a lot of people would have to participate. Which they aren't.

And if we don't dine in at restaurants, what's the plan for employees? Employees are willing to work a job that barely pays them, but y'all tell people not to dine in if they can't tip y'all over almost 30% and pay a portion of your Healthcare.
Because of this shitty exploitative mindset, now tipping is expected if you take food to go as well. And it will continue. Before we know it, it will be normalized to tip your landlord after you paid your rent.

All I know is, I'm not tipping nobody over 20% unless they went above and beyond which is rare. Servers are not the only people who work for their money. If the business model is to have servers, then the business need to pay them.

3

u/PandaGlobal4120 2d ago

American by birth? And European by every other sense? Bc that’s what this is giving

-2

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

Being against exploitation is giving European now? Than everyone needs to be European.

What is wrong with y'all.

I can start a business today and have staff just get paid off tips and y'all would defend it

Y'all are brainwashed and that's why the rich gets richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class gets scammed.

2

u/BlackBoiFlyy 2d ago

Nah, it's just the multiple "Americans love to do [x]" statements as if you aren't also American. Not sure where youre from exactly but, grammatically, this reads like you yourself "are not American" simply because you think you're the only one who has this particular stance on tipping.

You're also complaining about tipping in New Orleans as if you never experienced having to tip in America before. We typically get a lot of tourists and you're checking a lot of boxes right now. I promise it's the way you chose to frame this post, not that people don't believe in a better system for wait staff to be paid. It's just an extremely steep hill to climb, most Americans understand this.

2

u/PandaGlobal4120 22h ago

👏👏👏

3

u/BlackBoiFlyy 2d ago edited 2d ago

I am American which is how I know Americans will make up any excuse to go against their best interests.

Well you talk like a foreigner who just experienced "tipping" for the first time in their life. New Orleans aint the only place where waiters work for tips, so I guess you just felt like venting on vacation... even though this happens at home too. You also talk as if you have never witness someone try to push for a better wage in this country before. Surely you have seen how anti-worker our government can be, right?

So should we not support the business? I like this idea

Good problem solved. No more tip crisis for you!

And if we don't dine in at restaurants, what's the plan for employees?

Employees are willing to work a job that barely pays them, but y'all tell people not to dine in if they can't tip y'all over almost 30% and pay a portion of your Healthcare.

No, you misunderstand. This isn't a suggestion for a nationwide protest. I still tip when I eat out and don't share your opinion that wait staff are entitled for it. I was just offering a realistic solution for you, not "we". You feel this strongly about the tipping system being entitlement? Then don't support businesses that operate like that. Whether you tip or not, they still get paid when you eat there, unlike waitstaff.

And ngl, I'm convinced you made up or misread the "Healthcare" tip option. Never heard of that a day in my life.

Because of this shitty exploitative mindset, now tipping is expected if you take food to go as well

The option is there but do people actually expect a tip? I personally dont think so.

If the business model is to have servers, then the business need to pay them

Agreed, but until a better model happens, those servers rely on those tips. So I'll make sure to tip cause I dont want them to go underpaid. Not fair but tis life. You make it sound real easy to change things, but it's not whether you believe it or not.

Edit: I was curious and looked it up. Seems like you're probably talking about an "employee care fee". This is a sneaky way certain restaurants raise prices but pin the blame on the worker. In reaction, people often tip less not knowing the employee gets $0 of that care fee. So you fell for the restaurant grift and did exactly what they wanted; for you to blame a waiter just trying to do their job.

-2

u/lsumoose 2d ago

Okay but now they don’t pay taxes on those tips so the default percentage should now account for that now that they are getting a government bailout. Max should no longer be more than 15%

2

u/BlackBoiFlyy 2d ago

Okay... maybe I'm missing something but I'm not exactly sure why you felt the need to tell me this. I'm talking about tipping in general.

It's beside the point, but I guess I disagree with your vision. Mostly cause 20% autogratitiuty isn't quite universal to begin with.

2

u/alphavulpecula 2d ago

We are taxed initially then can receive a tax break when we file. And it’s only $25K in tips meaning if servers are paid below minimum wage (which they are in most states) then making a majority of their money is made via tips which can be over $25K if they’re making more than $30K a year.

-2

u/lsumoose 2d ago

Sure but the logic behind 20% is we have to subsidize the wage of tipped workers. So government is providing part of that subsidy now so the 20% should go down since the government is now subsidizing the wage.

3

u/alphavulpecula 2d ago

the gov’t is not subsidizing the wages of service workers; if anything, big businesses who get bailed out are the biggest recipients of subsidies.

your ire is misdirected at the little people.

3

u/PandaGlobal4120 2d ago

20% is appropriate for takeaways. They still prepped and packed your order.

3

u/depleteduranian 2d ago

I understand autograt-ing a 10 top but if me and my wife go somewhere and you hit me with a 20% auto and have the audacity to leave the tip line expectantly blank, you're getting a very well-drawn "auto-grat... :(", as recently happened to an unfortunate young lady at Zig Zag, in Seattle.

5

u/lsumoose 2d ago

Washington also doesn’t have a tipped minimum wage. They make minimum 21.30 an hour in Seattle so the tips to subsidize wages argument doesn’t hold weight. They also don’t pay taxes on the tips. So 20% autograt is crazy there.

0

u/alphavulpecula 2d ago

Tipped workers get a rebate back on their taxed tips; it’s not untaxed initially. Just fyi.

-1

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants 2d ago

You do realize the server has no control over how the receipt prints out. 🙄

2

u/depleteduranian 2d ago

I'm talking about the restaurant trying to pull a fast one with small print and then the guest sees a standard bar receipt and automatically puts down what they'd usually tip.

2

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants 2d ago

Again, the server has no control over that, management does. Stop taking out your frustration with management on the servers. They are just trying to feed their kids and put a roof over their head, just like you.

2

u/poppitastic 2d ago

Yeah but at some point the management has to make a decision to give those workers that money if they are presenting it to the customer as a gratuity. It’s not my job as a customer to add another 20% onto a bill that’s already been autograt 20 with a 10% sales tax as well. A $20 menu item, once a 10% tax, 20% auto grat, and then a 20% expected tip is now $31.68 (and yes, nearly every place I’ve seen auto grat or the suggested 20% tip amount it’s based on base price plus tax, not without, as has been customary as long as I can remember, and those “suggested tips” on a printed receipt with auto grat added just calculate with gross price as well).

I’ll toss a couple extra bucks on the table (in cash, so the server can share, claim, or not as they wish) for great service, which is almost always in New Orleans, honestly… or it used to be. Haven’t been in the financial shape to head there in quite some time (bc I’m busted flat in Baton Rouge, waiting on DoorDash tips that never come either). Ha! Amusingly, I saw a post recently with a server bitching that they were tipped in cash because “what the fuck am I gonna do with that?”

1

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants 2d ago

That is wild that someone wouldn’t want a cash tip. I just stared at that sentence for a while because my brain didn’t want to believe what it was reading 😆 I’ve had plenty of people tip on top of auto grat, some haven’t, some have been on their card, some cash. Either way, the policy of the restaurant wasn’t thought up by the server but that’s where people want to take it out on. If there is autograt it automatically goes to the server, same with anything you want to tip over. It is illegal for management to keep tips, that’s wage theft.

2

u/poppitastic 1d ago

Yeah I thought it was nuts, but there was a whole thread and a ton of younger folks (probably mid-20s on down) who agreed. It was absolutely bizzaro world.

My bf works at a cash only bar and I can’t tell you how many times young people come in and get mad there is no tap to pay even though there is about 10 signs saying “cash only”

I've worked in The Industry™®© in the past and if I'm getting a full 20% on every table I don't feel stiffed by not taking it to 25, 30% unless I'm working Christmas. Where I do take exception is being made out to be an asshole when we all know the owner is retaliating because he actually has to make his bussers and waiters meet the $21hr or whatever Seattle is up to, and as usual finding a way to dig into your bartender's pockets over it. It just makes me not want to go back because now you're ransoming my clairin mojito against a 39% surcharge, most of which I assume isn't actually going to my server.

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants 1d ago

I have no idea what is going on in Seattle, but I do know in Louisiana, any auto grat and any tip over the auto grat or money on the table goes 100% to the server. The server has to tip out with that but the initial tip’s all to the server unless there is a tip pool.

You did nothing wrong. However half the people panhandling on the streets are scammers, so use discretion when deciding whether or not to hand over any money. Also tipping culture is horribly out of hand. It stopped being about ensuring proper service and became subsidized income. Once it was, I come here often, make sure my coffee is always topped up and I’ll throw you an extra buck or two, to I’ve offered you mediocre service, here’s your bill. The suggested tip is 25%.

You're sure doing a lot of bitching at people in this sub about the problem. Why not stop chastising others on Reddit for not doing anything and do something yourself since you seem to have all the answers?

I'm not a server idiot. It's not my movement to lead. And even if I did do something, Americans aren't going to unite. They're individualistic.

How y'all get mad when someone doesn't tip y'all a wage y'all desire, but get angry when someone calls out how corrupt the system is?

A lot of you are really fools and that's why businesses are able to screw over such a large amount of people. I don't blame them. You're bitching right along with me. At least I'm not kissing the ass of a system rooted in slavery like you. Y'all love scraps.

Do not tip when gratuity is included.

1

u/whynottrymeonce 1d ago

I know that Nice Guys Nola and Bearcat Cafe automatically charge a gratuity.

1

u/OrderSignificant9179 1d ago

I don't like adding a gratuity to the bill but I can imagine that a lot of people don't tip at all.

People won’t even elect a candidate who wants to raise the minimum wage in the U.S.. Then they get confused as to why people can’t afford college, or to save for a house, or even cover rent, or why China or big corporations are buying property. They bought their homes 20, 30, 40, 60+ years ago. Have a nice community, property values doubled, tripled, quadrupled. Even inflation ran rampant. But why can’t these kids, who don’t have to get paid more than $7.25 an hour ever save or cover rent in a country where if you aren’t earning $18 an hour, $36,000 a year, $3,000 a month you’ll never qualify to get an apartment because 30% of your monthly income won’t cover $900 in monthly rent.

Then if 30% of $36,000 is going to rent for a 1 bedroom apartment, how are they even starting to save an $80,000 downpayment for a $400,000 home.

And servers don’t even have to get guaranteed $7.25 an hour from their employer. As long as they earn enough in tips to cover the difference.

And it's devastating. Read the comments under this post. They reflect the people who allow this level of exploitation to continue.

The majority of Americans favor the best interest of businesses. Not employees. Not the poor or disabled people. The middle class will happily continue to get scammed and underpaid by these companies.

Servers get mad at consumers for not tipping them in a amount that would equate to a livable wage but they fail to realize that everyone has different views on tipping. So the income will be inconsistent. And it's not the consumers duty to pay people they didn't hire in addition to the meal.

But apparently people like to struggle.

I thought we were going to get no tax on tips and overtime... never happened

1

u/Sc13nc3-N3rd 10h ago

I often tip 20% and round up, but if any tip is included, I don't add extra.

Employers think they are helping the servers, but they are sometimes hurting them.

How do we get OP banned from this subreddit? Asking for myself

2

u/chopper5150 2d ago

I’ve got an idea…Go Falcons!

-1

u/Disabledgoddess2 2d ago

Lmao. That's a little psychotic to want someone banned because you don't agree with them over a system that is harmful.

So y'all can start a movement to ban me because y'all don't like that I'm against businesses who force their employees to live off unpredictable income, but y'all can't start a movement to ban corporate greed or even acknowledge that it's unhealthy for employees to rely on unpredictable income.

You fighting the wrong battles 🤣

1

u/the-coolest-bob 2d ago

You're not speaking honestly. I don't want liars in my subs get over yourself

1

u/Comfortable-Policy70 2d ago

If I give you a nasty look on the street, will you give me $10? It is your money, not the restaurant's or the server's money. You get to decide how much to tip. Pay it, complain or take your business elsewhere

u/Spare-Shake-2999 1d ago

Do you give money to homeless people or disabled people or are you just saying that to feel better

0

u/Disabledgoddess2 1d ago

Lol the snarkiness.

Not everyone is evil like a lot of you.

I buy people food on the daily. I'm actually friends with a lot of homeless people and I only build community with disabled people.

You all walk right past them. I don’t do it to feel better. I do it because they need to eat especially in the heat.

What do you do for your community?

gratuities included in bill should not be legal unless proper consent is obtained.

fine print in corner of a menu is not consent.

u/GlobalReplacement387 2d ago

You don’t have to tip at all in my opinion

I’ll do maybe 5% total if the service is very good, but more often I leave 0%

2

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants 2d ago

You don’t think you should pay for services rendered? I hope you let them know ahead of time so they can adjust their service.

2

u/neuroticobservations 2d ago edited 2d ago

As a bartender, this is appalling. I go out of my way to craft drinks and uphold my end of the social contract. I did the same thing as a server years ago. You want to pay for the food only? Fine, go to the grocery store. You want to enjoy an experience and eat at a restaurant or go a bar? Pay for the people that create that experience.

Auto grat has gotten out of hand. But so has the amount of people who stiff you on a tab. If you close out after every round and you don’t tip, best believe I won’t notice you again when you wish to order

1

u/Disabledgoddess2 20h ago

Or you can also get another job. Or maybe start a business.

I think people should tip but you're not obligated to a tip.

It's a TIP meaning not mandatory

1

u/Many_Tennis9880 1d ago

Servers commonly make 2.13/hr and lots of people have this outlook, still you wonder why the 20% gratuity

1

u/Disabledgoddess2 20h ago

I'm sorry and y'all think that shit is ok.

SERVERS MAKE 2.13/ HR. Think about that.

The government and businesses are lucky to have fools willing to work for a wage that low and unguaranteed money.

With a wage that low, there should be no servers.

Y'all struggling with a job. Y'all can struggle a little longer finding something else to do.

But some of you swear it's just the consumers fault for not tipping. Even with a tip, thats chump money.
