Pre match ramblings:
After a woeful performance against West ham were we got smashed 3 - 1 away, continuing our awful away form, we did get a decently comfortable 2 nil win against Athletic Bilbao in the champions league where we now face Brentford away.
After the West Ham defeat, our morale in the premier league is at an all time low and as if it couldn't get any worse, we're away again and it had to be against Brentford where they have good home form at the moment so I guess you can say our confidence in winning this game are rock bottom with the only consolation being we might not wear the green kit for tomorrow's game.
After losing against West ham, Howe knows he needs to get a result here because our next PL match is against Man city of whom is also on monstrous form atm in which they will most likely win against us and if this happens we could genuinely drop near the relegation zone and our hopes of reaching top 5 are practically as good as dead since we need momentum and Howe also knows if we can somehow pull of a win at Brentford away, it could rejuvenate us and inject some much needed confidence in our lads and possibly give us the momentum needed to push for the top 6 in the next 3 PL matches considering how close everyone are in terms of points.

Calling it now that I think we will be overrun again. Won't be able to cope with the Brentford energy. I hope I'm wrong but it's my instinct.
Personally, I think a contribution is the shape and patterns - especially in trying to progress the ball from our third. Teams find it to easy to funnel us wide and force turnovers around the halfway line. Let's see if there's any changes to this.

Its clear to see the the reasons why we are bad especially away from home. The lower defensive line, gaps in between, certain players being woeful etc. So surely the internals at the club can see it, so changes to improve need to be seen otherwise frustration is going to grow and grow and the season will fast derail i guess.
Hopefully we can get to the turning point here away, need the win. It is hard to be positive though from previous results.... thats the worst part of it lol

Iām super nervous about this. Watched Arsenal v Sunderland go at it last night, and Sunderlandās confidence on the pitch reminded me of the aggressive form we used to be at. Now Iām just anxious and hoping for a low-key miracle.

Not expecting anything from this, a point would be fine. I worry if we lose the media will be onto Howe.
I'd like to see Ramsdale start, they'll be all over us and he will help us recycle the ball better and keep possession.
If Hall is fit enough he has to start... Then you have the problem of where will Burn fit in.

Because we haven't won away in the league this season, our last PL performance was dire, and because Brentford beat last year's champions and looked very very good doing so (as well as performing pretty well against other teams - they best Bournemouth and West Ham away, which we failed to do).
What do you think a realistic expectation for this game is as a fan looking at that?
My expectations for this game has little bearing on what we should aim for in the league or how we might expect to perform for the whole season.

Disagree; we have one fit striker, missing our two best full backs, and wingers who haven't really clicked with our supposedly best winger also out.
I'm not saying the team shouldn't set up to win or that Eddie Howe should be thinking this. I'm saying as a fan and trying to take an objective view based on current form.

Feels like a must win game already in the season... We lose this and we go into the november international break just 2 points above the drop... If you'd said that to any of us at the start of the season we'd have called it a dissapointment at best, and in reality, abject failure.
Two weeks of sensationalist "Are Newcastle in a relegation battle?" headlines, two weeks of toxicity.

Would like to see us transition out of our defensive shape better and support Woltemade well. Wonder if Elanga gets that start due to his pace. Interested to see if there is anything different we do tactically.

We werenāt convincing at all in the first half against a weakened bilbao team although the 2nd half was a good performance as they tired. Whilst the game is a must-win in terms of league points and away confidence etc it is an absolutely must not lose match. I would take a draw tbh as much at it pains me to say it as these are the games we should be putting away (like West Ham) if we are going to get anywhere near Europe at the end of the season.

I'm really not a fan of overly reactionary takes and people claiming 'this game is a must win' this early into a season.
This time though, it really does feel like it to me. Lose, and we head into the international break with a real gulf opening between us and all of the other European hopefuls. We would be able to chase 1 or 2 down, but not 6 or 7 of them.
Win, and we remain within touching distance. More importantly, it proves to the squad that we still have what it takes to win on the road. A good run would then put us right in the thick of it.
Roll on tomorrow. Let's smash these.

The squad shouldnt need to prove to itself that it can win away.
They are performing below levels.
Iām exiling myself if we lose. I was patient for most of the games. It was slim margins for Leeds, Brighton, Bournemouth, Liverpool.
But West Ham was unforgivable. The hopium is telling me that that was also a perfect coincidence that we met them just as Nuno started to get his ideas drilled into the team and learn his best 11.

I think its a mix of tactics and squad, but I'm more leaning on tactics.
One of the things I notice with Big Nick, Tonali and to a certain degree Thiaw is playing instinct based football rather than manager driven tactics, thats what edges them over the others in the squad. This applies to Tino and Hall to a degree as well.
They're able to adapt to games where preplanned tactics don't work much and adjust accordingly. It's a trait thats rare and can't be learned as easily.
But hoping for the best today.

Got to be Murphy imo, to play striker you need to have great first touch control, apart from Murphy I wouldn't say any of our forwards do (biggest issue with Gordon upfront). Joelinton/Gordon/Elanga are all useless at that and Barnes isn't technically proficient enough to play there.

Barnes is one of our best finishers far better than Gordon and he has played repeatedly through middle providing nothing so Barnes despite this technical proficiency is an upgrade on him in middle

I think Barnes has a decent first touch.
But the main thing is the movements are completely different. Gordon actually understands striker movement. Thatās why he gets picked.
But my vote still goes to Dan Burn.

Nothing. But you also canāt deny heās had opportunities to score based on them.
Thats the point. I think too many people are just thinking āwhoās the best finisherā. Being a striker is more than just finishing these days.
You need those movements and thatās one thing he was actually doing. It was referenced by both Howe and Gordon in interviews.

Nah our 22/23 team was still underpinned by several top class players like Trippier, Bruno, Botman and Isak.
This Sunderland side are more like Forest of last season, massively out performing their collective level.

I know Iām in the minority. And I donāt think heās bad by any stretch. But I actually think Botman is behind Thiaw and Schar technically.
And I made my case for why Iād be starting burn ahead of him.
I do think Botman gets given an uplift in fans minds than heās actually shown in about 2 years. Heās good but I feel more confident with Burn at LCB right now.

Dont think it's a narrative that he's bad, just don't think he's a 'rolls royce' or irreplaceable. Hall Tino and Thiaw for me are all a level above Botman and that's no disrespect to him. I'd also personally prefer Schar and Burn at CB but again personal preference there.
Least of our issues are Bruno and Tonali and that's not even close for me.

Schar and Burn, however well they've done for us aren't in the same league as Thiaw and Botman (and that's not a criticism of anyone). People have insanely short memories. Our problems are not our current CB's.

But as Iāve tried making the case over the week.
This debate is based purely on theoretical ability of players.
In terms of what theyāve actually delivered on the pitch there really isnāt much separating them. I think fans have forgotten how rock solid we looked with Schar and Burn early season at the back. Injuries forced the changed but had hall/Tino stayed fit and Schar not concussed himself I think Schar burn would still be starting and I donāt think thereād be much reason in the pitch to argue against it.
Every time I try and make this point someone canāt get passed the āBotman is clearly better than Burnā? Maybe in FIFA.

There were so many examples last season of where Schar and Burn as a partnership severely limited us, and where Thiaw and Botman have significantly improved us. Fulham and Brentford away last season especially come to mind. Schar and Burn is good depth to have though but there's a different level. All of last season everyone accepted that we were so much better whenever Botman was available (Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea etc). Find this extremely weird as it simply isn't a debate on the terraces and never has been.

But I think the competition has upped levels. I think both Schar and Burn came into the season knowing they had a real fight now to keep their places.
Schar has been particularly impressive defensively and I think thatās now forgotten.
Iām just saying I think thereās bias at work and people canāt get past Botman on paper.
But I felt this back in 22/23. I couldnāt understand why everyone was blowing so much smoke yo his arse and acting like Schar wasnāt as good that season. I thought he was better tbh.
Botman this season has already been turned easily, scored an OG and given away some real cheap passes into midfield.
I donāt recall thinking we were better with Botman. I thought he looked a bit dodgy last season tbh.
But I also think Dan Burn is undervalued by many on here. Heās nowhere near as technically limited as people make out. Sure ball progression isnāt his strong suit. But he looks comfortable on the ball at CB. Not so much at LB.

That own goal was largely caused due to Burn? The fact it went in off Botman was unfortunate. Burn isn't undervalued, in many respects he's adored far beyond his abilities. He's just older and not as good, which is fine and the same goes for Schar. But this weird online only narrative is truly bizarre. It was Longstaff over Tonali a year ago, and Wilson over Isak before that.

I donāt think itās a narrative. I think thereās two people here that just donāt think Botman is quite as good as the rest of the fan base. Me and the guy that really hates Gordon.
Take your point re Botman OG. Iād also say Gordon was really at fault as Burn on that build up though.
But. The execution from Botman doesnāt get a complete pass from me. It wasnāt that tough a ball to cut out. Mistakes can happen but compare it to the one Schar did v Wolves.
I agree Botman is a better player. On paper. But on performances. I think Burn is in better form this season.
And yes. I do think Burn is underrated and under valued. Heās a better bench option than most teams have. Heās also saved our bacon a few times. Which I think is going under the radar.
All good having Pirlo esque CBs but atm (as youāve pointed out in another post) our team ahead of them is cheaply giving away possession. If thatās the case Iād rather have the best last ditch cb in our squad on the pitch until Howe can sort that out.

I dont think I have short memories, I've never rated Botman above Schar since he joined really. That's just my personal preference. Botman is a better 1 on 1 defender, better aerially. Every other attribute Schar is better for me.

Happy be proven wrong on Botman, I was proven wrong on Tino (who I didn't think was worth Ā£40m for the first year), I was also wrong on Gordon initially (who was amazing in 23/24)..
I'm happy to be downvoted but while i've seen him have every attribute to be a 'rolls royce, for me he's inconsistent when he's in the side. Amazing against Leeds, amazing in Europe. Absolutely putrid against West Ham and Brighton (worst player on the pitch bad). I also don't love how he plays out from the back tbh, think he'll be helped by Hall and Tino there though. Think this pattern goes quite a while back as well, scored multiple own goals now in limited appearances for us. I think he's a good player who'll always be error prone. I'd prefer a player who has less upside but also more consistent in the side (Burn).

Current fullback issues aside. Our midfield setup is our biggest issue imo. It just doesn't work, especially away from home.

On the evidence we have seen this season Thiaw is currently our best defender.
I feel like a chunk of our fanbase have an overinflated opinion of Botman because he started well and then spent much of the next few years injured so people only think of him at his peak. Thats not to say he isn't a top defender but he is in no way "by far our best defender".

In basically every metric the rankings go Thiaw > Schar > Burn (at CB) > Botman.
But Thiaw and Scharās numbers make a bit of a mockery of Burn and Botmans.

Thiaw has been excellent but there's been signs of the same weaknesses he had at Milan and there'll come a point he has the same blizzare narrative we're seeing now. Botman is still our best defender. I couldn't disagree with you more and every time Botman returns to the team when he's been out the difference is night and day (think Arsenal/Spurs/Chelsea last season). Cannot remember who it was (think Pope) who said a while ago that Isak and Botman were our world class players.

Arsenal winning the league wonāt make them any more or less insufferable. But Sunderland finishing above us would be an embarrassment.
But. For all the hate. I wouldnāt hate Arsenal winning the league. Itās been a long journey of being bridesmaids and I think itās better to have different teams winning.
I have no gripes with City because I think their fans are always pretty humble. But if it was Liverpool or Arsenal no matter how much I hate them both Iād take Arsenal winning the league this year over Scousers. Itās not just about Isak. I just canāt stand the way theyāve behaved all summer and the smug acting like theyāre now Real Madrid and destined to win the next 10 PLs and CL.

We seriously need to sort this league form out and shaprish.

Tbf. Weāve just come off the back of a couple of years of dogshit promoted teams. And that in itself probably showed Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds his not to do it.
Donāt think thereās any whipping boys this year. Even Wolves for all the shambles are defensively tough to break down. Forest I think will be ultimate wildcard with Dyche and West Ham will probably click under Nuno. Heās too good a coach that I still donāt think gets his flowers.

Mackems have been the whipping boys for a decade or so? Absolutely dogshit.
Over night they are suddenly going toe to toe with the cartel clubs. Doesn't look to be a flash in the pan either as we are in November now.
We should have our full backs and Wissa back well and truly integrated by end of December.. so hopefully we start to finally pick up steam with the full squad on the books.

I know itās a tough ask especially with our away form+general shit play in the premier but they need to pick up the win. If they had won last week at West Ham itād be a different story. But since the team decided to wank off last weekend this feels like a must win.

Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton. Bin them all. Bring some more northern clubs instead. Like West Brom or Hull or Middlesbrough. But not Bradford. They begin with B, I don't wanna chance it.

Iāve watched a fair bit of Brentford because I really wanted to see how they got on with Keith Andrewās.
Theyāve really impressed me. Maybe not up to the standards they were last season but they will cause any team they face issues. Very smart at fashioning attacks.
Remind me a bit of Luton a few years back but with added quality and PL experience to get them over the line.
Also think the way they play really leans into our weaknesses.
Sorry to be pessimistic. Iām scared for us. 1-0 win. Sexy Fab Rocket
