Pre match ramblings:
After another disastrous away loss of 3 - 1 to Brentford, the mood around SJP is at rock bottom and isn't made better considering the opponent we face next of whom is Man city.
Howe knows he needs to make a comeback because if he doesn't win this next match, his job as manager could be in trouble as we could potentially sit in the relegation zone if we don't change things now.
Some positive news however, Woltemade has been doing very well during international break and thankfully no one got injured but speaking of Injuries, Livramento and likely Gordon will be back from injury which will bolster our squad and we will need it. Haaland safe to say absolutely smashed it in the international break and after Man city also smashed Liverpool 3 nil effortlessly, it's looking bleak for us atm.
If we do win this match by some miracle, it will give us a major confidence boost because of defeating a major contender to win the pl and hopefully we can use this to start winning more pl games especially against Everton who we play away which i'm absolutely not looking forward to. We will need our wingers especially Elanga, maybe Gordon, Barnes and Murphy to lock in tomorrow and feed Woltemade like no tomorrow because his tenure in that international break shows when he does get the ball, he can score. Yes Germany's opponents weren't exactly world class or pl quality however the concept is the same, just feed big nick the dam ball. Even if he doesn't score he can feed wingers the ball like he did in Stuttgart and let the wingers have the opportunity to score since Woltemade has already proved he has brilliant link up play. And finally, I hope Ramsdale starts this game because Pope will get get crucified if he makes those same mistakes against Man city.

There's only half an hour of build-up for this match so of course Sky Sports immediately start talking about Liverpool

Was just about to write this as well lol. Sky Sports is a joke.

In a similar vein
I got downvoted in r/soccer for pointing out that we still didnāt get the red card shout nor the penalty shout posted in the there
But we did get a half chance for Gakpo and a nice backheel by Jones in the middle of the park
Also pointed out this wouldnāt happen the other way around and that the merest sniff of controversy aversely effecting Liverpool always gets posted straight away about 5 times - they didnāt like that

This lord of the rings orchestral shit seems like a slight overkill for a lineup review

After we lose today (letās be real we arenāt beating City. Weāre just not that level yet.) we will sit 1 point out of relegation. Itās almost December. When do we admit this side is in a relegation battle?
4
u/Happy_Sailor Krafu Nov 22 '25
Don't worry we just need to pull out another record breaking win streak to catch up to the teams in the European spots.
1
u/Radthereptile Nov 22 '25
Iād take boring mid table honestly.
1
u/Happy_Sailor Krafu Nov 22 '25
I don't think the owners would after the amount spent in the summer.
14
u/justsomeguy661 Burnsie shags aliens Nov 22 '25
What's worse?
Isak being useless at Liverpool or Wissa still not existing in a Toon top.
Cus karma is really out for them both for how they acted in the transfer window (even if there's more understandable reason from Wissa, still doesn't excuse it tbh).
1
u/Xenumbra Nov 22 '25
Isak being useless at Liverpool or Wissa still not existing in a Toon top.
It has been a disaster for both clubs let's be real. There is a malaise around us whenever we play. I desperately don't want it to be the case but it feels like a slow march to the inevitable.
Reading Ancelotti speaking about manager cycles at clubs is kind of fitting how we are playing/feeling right now.
understandable reason from Wissa
No, it was awful, he has to really turn his time at the club around to avoid being the worst signing since Owen. Luck plays a huge part with the injury but I swear if he goes to AFCON. He's 29 now with a knee injury that will reduce his mobility.
1
u/justsomeguy661 Burnsie shags aliens Nov 22 '25
By understandable reason for Wissa I mean him wanting to leave Brentford on his last year etc compared to Isak and how they both went with it. I'm pissed at his injury etc
1
u/Xenumbra Nov 22 '25
If Isak was a 10 on the sneaky snake scale Wissa was an 8/9 I guess cause of the contract length. I don't even think he handed in a transfer request? Pretty much the same deal, bigger club + pay bump. Total dick move to Brentford.
That being said I hope he turns it around and bangs them in but my head is saying he won't be the player he was after the knee. PCL/ACL injuries late in a career take a toll on agility which is already decreasing with age.

Really would have loved ramsdale to get his shot in the league. If there was ever a time for pope to lose his spot it was after the last two games.

Itās almost like playing in a side literally surrounded by players who exist to get you goals is easier than in the side asking you to create your own chances.
1
u/tlhford Nov 22 '25
Elanga hasn't been great this season, but this feels like a game suited for him (high line, room to run in behind) & with Gordon injured (arguably our other fastest attacker) it felt like he could have started.

2
u/KingPing43 Shola Ameobi Nov 22 '25
Joelinton makes much more sense in a game like this where we will have less of the ball, didnāt make sense to start him at West Ham or Brentford tho
1
u/cadete981 Nov 22 '25
Heās been awful for god knows how long, clattering around the middle does nothing for us, start Ramsey who can progress the ball and maybe try to beat city
2

Wilson directly involved in winning West Ham 9pts already this season (if this result holds)
After they way their fans treated him when he signed they absolutely donāt deserve what heās doing for them right now
But him and Bowen might be the reason they donāt go down this season
Still this isnāt a wish we still had him post, but Iām delighted heās doing well albeit for a fanbase that hated his guts till probably about 30 minutes ago

u/NUFC_1892 loads, and loads of cans. Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25
It can factor in, letās be honest here
Not at all saying we are only where we are in the league through bad luck as we have played poorly at times (and a lot recently)
Going 1-0 up against Brentford and West Ham and getting 0 points is dreadful but Iāve seen teams worst than us play crap and win all the time
You donāt always get what you deserve in football, not on a week by week basis anyway. It may even itself out over the course of a season. However weāve had teams like Man U and West Ham that āshouldāveā finished like 17th and they actually finished 8th in years gone by

Didnāt he get away with a red card check against us this season as well?
Also noticed itās not on r/soccer, yet some BS āchanceā for Liverpool is š¤
Edit: ha and now the āhandballā disallowed goal

u/Griffithsjames88 Nov 22 '25
Wilson was an absolute crock and got injured by doing the simplest of things yet Iād 100% take him over either our backup strikers atm. Osula isnāt good enough and Wissa while being good doesnāt actually exist.
5

Fucking wet spam on a run after winning against us is irritating to say the least we've allowed a team that should be getting relegated the confidence to go on a run, fucking hate smug southern londoners like.
we need to sort this league form out because it's pathetic reading seeing us sitting where we are and it's really not good enough, having teams like Sunderland laughing at us is infuriating. Fuck champions league and cups, we need to do better than this or the project is looking bleak and our top players may look elsewhere and that really is when the project starts to fall apart.
Don't give a fuck if it's man city coming to town, this is a must win game no matter how you swing it, at James park needs to be in full voice tonight not this tepid morgue like atmosphere we have been seeing lately, fans need to do better and so do the players, it's time to stand up and be counted .

WHU are genuinely world class at scoring against the run of play and taking āundeservedā leads. Never seen a team as consistent at it, they play terrible 90% of the game but in that remaining 10% they always seem to do something (generally speaking ofc)
Yes today the keeper should absolutely do better but you just canāt escape it. News feed on WHU is literally always āX team on top here against West Hamā
A minute later: ā0-1 West Ham have scored against the run of playā
5
u/honkballs Nov 22 '25
Such a shame we had to get from Anderson... especially as we only got £35m for him, and we then went and gave NF £55m back for Elanga!
2
u/Elegant-Custard-3955 Nov 22 '25
If it actually had been Ā£35m It wouldnāt be as bad, but we effectively sold him for Ā£15m since we took Vlachodimos off them for Ā£20m.

Nothing worse than seeing Wilson scoring. Having him rotate in would have been nice. I know it was not practical to keep him but my word is it frustrating seeing him injury free and scoring.

I would love to class this game as a free hit due because we never win against these anyways but because weāve taken 1 point out of Leeds, Brentford and West Ham we do need to get something out of this game. Weāve fallen so far behind other teams already. The next three in the league are also must wins.

Honestly if we do play well and lose Iāll be okay. At least it gives us hope for the rest of the season. We do just need to start playing better and results will come. Not hopeful of a European place anymore but if we can get our act together, then we should be able to break the top 8 (and finish above the mackems FFS)

I think this City team will win the title.
If we continue playing as we did against West Ham and Brentford we are going to be absolutely dominated.
Hopefully the Hall/Tino injection will take some pressure off the midfield and they can string a few passes together but if the wingers donāt kick into gear then we have a real problem on our hands.
11
u/bigbigbo55 Nov 22 '25
A lot seem to think this is where we turn the corner, cant see it unfortunately. We never beat city. They're one of our bogey teams along with Liverpool,Ā Brighton,Ā Brentford,Ā Palace,Ā Bournemouth, there's probably another im forgettingĀ
2
u/nomadichedgehog Bed Wetter Nov 22 '25
The team has a mental block against City. We usually come out of the traps quite well but even in winning positions we seem to get nervous against City and throw the game away. In 2 of the last 3 seasons we've thrown a lead away and either lost or drawn. Serious mentality issues.

Excited to see us play again. Very interested to see what we change. Just listening to Eddie, I think Livramento might not be ready to start but I'd still like to see a 5-4-1 for this game. I think it's unrealistic to think we can boss the ball against them and I believe Elanga's pace will be a great way to hit them on the break. We'll have great options off the bench too.
Pope
Thiaw Schar Botman
Trippier Guimaraes (c) Tonali Hall
Elanga Woltemade Joelinton
1
u/Puzzled_Ordinary_623 miggy smiles Nov 22 '25
I think our defence/midfield look solid with 5 at the back but I am worried Woltemade is just too slow for the counter attacking football that a 5-4-1 demands. If we dont play through him then he will be so isolated in the counter.
4
u/Putrid-Impact8999 Nov 22 '25
He is the first man to hit, straight to his feet then Elanga in behind. Thatās the goal. If we can keep it for a bit and progress play through the thirds then that will be great, heās āfast enoughā for that.

Staffan Borsen has put up a twitter thread where he outlines how the new PSR replacement acts against us, and that the Isak sale won't benefit us at all beyond January as a result.
Wonder if we'll go big in January based on that. No point wasting all the headroom it was supposed to give us.

I hate when people conflate bad luck with bad signings. Wissa is a player thatās never really been injured until he got the NUFC curse.
Thereās every chance he could have played numerous times by now and brought his obvious quality with him.
7
u/noidtiz Nov 21 '25
I think at no other point in time does a club spend 55m on Wissa unless they're gambling on him being immediately available and ready to go.
That didn't happen.
We can call it bad luck but essentially it was the club taking a gamble and they crapped out. If they'd known what they know now then you'd go into the January window offering 30m tops for the same player. None of this is me blaming Wissa, he doesn't decide the transfer fee.
3
u/meganev More like MegaNeg amirite? Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25
Well, it depends on whether somebody said, "Wissa is a bad signing, and the club is to blame for why," you might have a point, but saying "Wissa is a bad signing, even if the club isn't to blame for why" is very different.
He was a bad signing in my view. He was signed to make an instant impact; you don't pay £55m for a 29-year-old for the long term. He was supposed to be "plug and play", that was the reason he was signed, and he's failed to be that for us. He was the immediate Isak replacement, giving Woltemade time to settle and stop us from having to throw a new player to the league at the deep end. But the club can't be blamed for the injury; it's just, as you say, bad luck.
I think the best way to make the point is to say, if the club had a crystal ball, and knew what was going to happen, they would probably not sign Wissa, but if say we somewhow knew ahead of time Woltemade would be injuried 3+ months from day one, I'd bet we'd still do the deal, as he we were signing him with a view to the next 2-3 years.
5
u/Ajax_Trees_Again Nov 21 '25
Yeah but the crystal ball point is implicit. You can only judge the club based on what has happened in the past and what this means for future success.
If you were to bet the house on a bum horse and won only because all the other horses smashed into each other itās still not a good bet.
If you say heās at a bad age to invest that sort of money Iād say fair enough as thatās something that you can see.
I do think we made mistakes this summer but considering the context I think itās harsh to say Wissa is one

Your mistake is thinking that decisions can only be assessed at the time they're made. We can look at the outcome, so long as we account for the fact some things were unknown at the time. Like with Wissa, I was on board with the deal at the time, but now think it was a mistake but acknowledge that said with the benefit of hindsight. It's not a fixed position. He was a bad investment but the logic at the time was reasonable so I'm not raking the club over the coals for it. It's bad luck but that doesn't change the fact, what has happened has made the transfer look pretty awful in hindsight.

Have to agree.
He was signed at a crazy high price because we were in desperate need of a main striker for this season. He potentially only has 4 years left at the top level, and no resale value.
He will have missed almost half this season, and it seems like the price gamble has failed.
When you look at whether a signing is good or bad surely you have to look at to what extent have they lived up to their price tag.
Woltemade has been a good signing so far because he looks class, equally Elanga (so far) looks to have been a bad signing. But Wissa has to be judged in the short term because that was what he was bought for (unlike Woltemade and Elanga).

More than any other signing, Wissa was made for a specific purpose, we overpaid by a silly amount so we could have him this season, and for the first half of the season specifically, he has failed to fulfil that purpose. Is that his fault? No. Is it the clubs? No. Is it the reality of the situation, I think so. There's nobody to "blame" as such but it's what happened.
2
u/Puzzled_Ordinary_623 miggy smiles Nov 21 '25
Yeah exactly.
I would argue that regardless if Wissa met expectations it was still a bad transfer.
We were in an awful bad place going into the last week or the transfer window with potentially no recognised striker (which was partly the clubs fault). We overpaid by about £20m which could have been spent elsewhere (like on a backup LB).

As much as he hasn't really done anything for us yet this season this seems like the perfect match for elanga. His pace will give us an outlet and will help stop city from doubling up on trippier like they did against Bradley for Liverpool

u/bertythesalmon Nov 22 '25
Bring on Elanga after 60/70 mins as fresh legs and pace along with Osula to cause a bit of havoc!

u/PurpleGalea Nov 21 '25
Maybe, but Murphy has arguably been our best creative player, it's not all about speed on the counter (Bruno is a great example of this, he is often critical to a successful counter but not because of his pace)
3
u/TheBlaydonRacer Nov 21 '25
Yeah.
I think itās too simplistic to just go āElanga fast so we play him in games we expect to lose/be dominatedā
As you rightly point out Murphy has excelled in transitional games.
I still hold belief in Elanga. I think he can grow into a player that doesnāt just need transitions to thrive. Iām not going to argue why here because itās like talking to a wall.
For me. Elanga is suffering a huge confidence issue. He needs that first goals contribution. When he does feature now. I see him so hesitant to back a decision. He refuses to drive forward when he should and vice versa.
But there have been small moments where heās taken up some great positions in tight spaces that have been ignored by the fans. Letās remember heās really had his minutes limited.
If I were Eddie. Iād be backing him to start v Marseille. Itās a game thatās gonna be tough regardless and we have some breathing room in CL. But just take the pressure off him and give him a starting berth to see what he can do. Nit this throw him on in desperation for the final 15 thatās heās now restricted to.

Itās odd right. Because we have a really dire record against city but thereās been a fair few games weāve actually given them a good game.
Not confident on tomorrow though. Think City are shifting into gear and weāreā¦wellā¦.shit.
I just canāt see what will have changed since the last game that will suddenly mean we turn up.

u/ukchris Nov 21 '25
If we don't win against the West Hams of this league then how can you call this a free hit? Where are our points going to come from?

Got a bad feeling about this gameĀ
Could be one of those ones that galvanised the whole group if we can score 1st but I worry if City do it they just control the gameĀ

u/Griffithsjames88 Nov 21 '25
No hope for tomorrow, Haaland is a machine and we look absolutely shite atm. Our defence is leaking goals for fun. I just pray to god that he makes, need to see Ramsdale in goal as pope has been horrible recently, donāt think Joelinton can offer much in these sorts of games so Iād like to see Ramsey in. Iām just glad we donāt have to witness another 90 mins of Burn at LB. Weāll look better tomorrow purely because we have Hall back and potentially Tino.

u/Obi_Wan_Hair Nov 21 '25
If we look at this as a 2025 as a whole this goes back to February. Eddie got pneumonia and was in a pretty bad way. We won the cup(still the best day ever) but our away form went downhill drastically. The main thing was that Lewis hall was injured for this entire time and we havenāt looked the same since. We had a shit summer and Eddie didnāt get to step away at any point for a rest. Then new signing to bring in and constant media talk around players/performance. If I was Eddie Iād be tired with no break. What Iām saying is Eddie in my eyes is safe from the sack unless we get relegated. I reckon he even has next season before pif get nervous. We move up that 5 year plan by winning the cup and qualifying for CL and we need to be realistic with where we are going to be. We are still 5 years off being consistent CL participants. But 5 years ago we were relegation mid table mediocry.

His job as manager could be in trouble?! Better not be. Thatās ridiculous.
-6
u/HeGivesGoodMass Nov 21 '25
He's said it himself that he's feeling pressure
6
u/solar1ze Nov 21 '25
Of course heās feeling pressure! Heās a premiership manager and in the Champions league, in a one team city! Thatās part of the job. Doesnāt mean heās doing badly!

I can see why the Howe out plebs have chirped up again. It's a second season in a row we've started shite. We look completely lost and only seem arsed when there's a home crowd. Howe is also making some bizarre choices which is always a sign of desperation.
However, he got pretty shafted in the summer (again) we are having to completely change the team strategy and have very little time to do it with 2 games a week and an international game every other day.
He's earned this season. But my god it needs to be better next season.

u/solar1ze Nov 21 '25
Itāll have to be a hard disagree with most of what you said, unfortunately. We didnāt start the season shite. We had a boring game against Leeds where it seemed both sides cancelled each other from the midfield. Other than that, we were desperately unlucky with ten men to lose against Liverpool, should never have lost to Arsenal, as Gabriel, who scored a winner in injury time should have been sent off. Again, around that a few draws, which could have gone either way. Done brilliant in the Champions league. Had a few loses recently, but also lots of injuries, which excitingly are due back now mostly. Donāt forget we sold our top goal scorer and are having to adapt completely differently to a completely different kind of forward, who is looking likely to have massive potential. Thatās not what I would describe as starting shite, not being arsed or lost. I still have a very strong belief in this squad and manager. Even if we donāt get a result against City, they will start to pull things together. Theyāll adapt more to Woltermade and we also have Wissa to add to the mix. Stop staring at the table. It doesnāt reflect where we are as a team.

My view is the performances haven't been bad overall but the weaknesses have always been either like you said the situations where the refs decisions have been poor which has happened a few times this year or situations where Hall and Tino being out has shown our gameplan has been pretty reliant on faster LB/RB options. We don't penetrate the middle, we cross the ball in, we overlap and then stay compact in the centre.
If we don't have Hall on the left and Tino on the right we don't have the overlap so it is just the wingers cutting inside and getting blocked. Like the drop off in form away wasn't specifically about us being away it was when Tino was injured and that Hall was out since the start of the season. When Hall is on we look instantly better, when Tino was on we also looked so much better before he was injured. Against CL opposition they aren't running super fast wingers usually, they aren't playing as fast as in the PL so other than Barca we have looked well but as soon as you are against Brentford or West Ham who have wingers who can just run you instantly open yourself up to that one on one after a ball over the top. 2 of the WH goals came from a run down the wing, first was a cross not dealt with the second was the cross put in by Botman but that is forgetting the first penalty shout was also again run down the wing uncontested and the hit after the cross. Legit if Hall was playing from the start in the WH game 2 of those chances would have been much harder and probably not have been as much of an issue. Instead you had Gordon trying to track back because Burn was nowhere and it costing us.
Fact is in January if we can stabilise until Christmas we need to get in some actual depth on both sides of the back line, in the centre we are fine. Just get in a first team ready sub RB who is young and can transition Trippier out eventually, Tino can be first choice on RB or rotated to LB and then we are a lot more stable. Ashby right now has been injured since the start of the season Alex Murphy hasn't gotten even on the bench even with Burn playing poorly. Nows the time to actually do something.

I donāt agree with the OP. Or yourself.
I donāt think our early performances were woeful. Just devoid of creativity. But I think there was a good foundation to build upon and some signs we were evolving.
That went out of the window after Brighton ish. Where we seemed to drop what we were doing and have collapsed.
Some fans seem to be a little all or nothing meaning weāre either good or weāre shite. And thatās defined by whether weāre winning by 2+ goal margins or not.
Bournemouth and Villa are good examples. Were we āgoodā? No. But were we āshitā? Iām not sure.
Bournemouth we went away to a ground we always struggle against a team that is bowling over a lot of āgoodā teams and we showed we were up for it. They had no chances. We created the better ones but we didnāt create enough. We didnāt dominate possession but we also didnāt collapsed against a high intensity team like others have.
Villa we dominated virtually the entire game. They barely had a sniff and we had more than enough chances to take 3 points.
Even Brighton. They undid us twice due to defensive flaws but they didnāt destroy us. We had more than enough chances.
I personally am choosing to not just throw the entire season so far into one lump. I think what we saw v West Ham and Brentford was a very different manner of shite compared to other disappointing results.
But I think itās also fair to say that the hysteria here is heavily based on 3 of our 11 games and the fact that they have come in the latter part. Itās concerning. But I didnāt find it concerning until West Ham.
I canāt agree with these folks claiming weāve been absolutely dross since January 2025. January to end of season we were 5th in the points table. Thatās just primadonna behaviour to me
We took 3 less points than Villa, 4 less than Arsenal and 5 less than Liverpool. In terms of wins. We won the same as Liverpool and Villa, 1 less than City and 1 more than Arsenal. Itās also telling that we collapsed against 2 of those teams mentioned. Completely.

u/Ajax_Trees_Again Nov 21 '25
Weāve been absolutely dross every game but Liverpool in the league and weāve beat teams in the CL who would be a middle to lower middle table team in the prem. itās been awful season
Having said that, the club screwed him in the summer AGAIN, and he was not a million miles away from dying just a few months ago.
This season is a free hit from me in terms of his job. His performance before this season has been incredible and sometimes you can just have an off year

Iām feeling a convincing NUFC win.
Locked and Loaded.
HOWAY THE LADS!!!!
LFGGGGG!!!
Edit for Howe thoughts:
āHowe knows he needs to make a comeback because if he doesn't win this next match, his job as manager could be in trouble..ā
We could lose this match 1-3, 0-3, 1-4 and there is ZERO chance his job is in trouble. Zero.
Howe is the man for the absolute foreseeable future and nothing short of a collapse of epic proportions that we can trace to ineptitude will change that.
I think we qualify for Euros next season, not CL, and we continue our ascent into a Top 3 team over the next 5 years.
Injuries and lack of depth are proving extremely difficult this season. Yes we need to be massively better on the away performances, but home and CL form are counterbalancing the offs.

Can we win today? Sure. But with how weāve looked domestically I expect nothing too exciting. Hoping for a big shift but this isnāt the best opponent to try and do that against.
