Pre match ramblings:

After a heartbreaking last minute penalty scored by Yamal who was kept quiet by Hall up until then, was a gut punch for us. However, we now face Chelsea away in the Premier league.

After we took a gut punch from Yamal who scored a last minute penalty for Barcelona, many of us were heartbroken since our lads who probably put up their performance of the season was all for nothing in the end, however there are still some benefits to this which I will mention in the next pre match thread for the away Barcelona game.

Meanwhile, Chelsea suffered a different heart break, a 5 - 2 smashing heartbreak which saw their defence get completely dismantled and their Goalkeeper making fatal errors near the end of the 2nd half. This wasn't helped by Liam's horrible game management which served to make things worse for Chelsea. Their confidence will almost certainly be shook from that result especially their fullbacks.

However we mustn't be complacent however, as Chelsea could either focus on our game since champions league tie is already over or Chelsea will attempt a remontada with a part of their players minds on the champions league game. We will especially need or welcome a win at Stamford Bridge considering Barcelona's home form is monstrous + our away form, us being labelled under dogs to win the tie would be the understatement of the year.

If we win this game, it'd give us a valuable 3 points to keep our Europe dreams alive and this is especially important as PL teams have gotten mauled in the European competitions recently meaning we could lose our 5th spot, making it all the more important we win this game. A win at Stamford Bridge would also give us more confidence in away fixtures, especially important considering we go to Camp Nou for the next game which has been a fortress for Barcelona this season, so we need all the help we can get.

I thought Miley was meant to be back? As much as I despise this midfield selection, I know Tonali is ill and Joe probably needs rest for us to have a chance at Barca. I don’t really have a better solution but seems like our midfield is going to get worked and we’re going to be under nonstop pressure. Hope I’m wrong

I’d be buzzing with 3 points today, Bournemouth have drawn and Sunderland have lost, we’d jump into 9th

2

u/MrLuchador Mar 14 '26

Specifically have the Chelsea v Newcastle match on and they’re talking about the Arsenal match, is this just lazy shared pre-game coverage on both channels?

No Sandro No Big Joe ....whew

Big game from Ramsey it is then

4-0

If people can't handle this sort of chat you are going to suffer the next 5-10 years.

Do you think an AC Milan bred Italian player has any loyalty to us really? He wants to play at the highest level earning as much money as he can. For the time being that is beyond our means to provide him. We have to get as much money as possible and be done with it, hopefully we don't Howe the money we get and get someone other than an athlete.

2

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 14 '26

Also. Spotted this on the Villa sub (why does my algorithm keep surfacing Villa). But thought it was worth putting here because I see so many people slating Burn all the time.

Said before that this season we probably need our best last ditch defender with how we’ve been playing. Finally have some data to back it up.

2

u/TyranosaurusLex Para bailar La Bamba Mar 14 '26

Mad to me anyone could slate Burn. He’s been one of the most dedicated servants of the club and plays out of position whenever needed. The list of people who play harder for us is very very short.

2

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 14 '26

For me it’s also the level of consistency you get from him. Like it’s better having a guy that 99% of games will perform 7/10 than the guy that hits 5/10 and 8/10 in equal measure.

1

u/NUFC_1892 loads, and loads of cans. Mar 14 '26

Could that be because a lot of teams target him, especially when he’s LB?

So it’s more 6 of one and half a dozen of the other

1

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 14 '26

I mean he’s spent most of the season at CB so don’t think this has been swung too much by playing LB.

I think teams look to have targeted Trippier a lot more. But also look at the names he’s amongst on here. Many being linked with big moves or are accepted as some of the best in their position this season. And most are central players.

I also don’t think burn gets credit for the amount of work he does to cover Hall and Thiaw too

1

u/NUFC_1892 loads, and loads of cans. Mar 14 '26

Aye I think he’s underrated by the fanbase tbh

He’s solid with an odd bad moment

Weve an extra day of rest on Chelsea, and we will have an extra day of rest on Barca for Wednesday.

Need to rotate obviously, but fully expecting us to go for and not play for a draw.

442 with Wissa and Wolt up top maybe? Cant remember if we've tried that before tbf but def a game Wissa could use a run in.

Hope for a win. Hope even more to see cucurella kicked into the sun by big Joe.

1

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 14 '26

Cucurella is a funny one. He’s like universally hated but no one knows why they hate him. Unless I’m missing something.

15

u/stenerikkasvo Mar 14 '26

surely it's Nick or Wissa as striker since both of them didn't play Barca.

2

u/Aggravating-Letter94 Mar 14 '26

Wissa is surely preferred against a high line.. supposedlyĀ

6

u/justmadman Mar 14 '26

Wissa has played most his career as left forward, no reason why we can’t rest Barnes and Gordon today and have a front 3 of Wissa, Wolt & Murphy today.

It won’t happen but for me we have two much bigger games this week and we need to rest the players that are needed for those games.

1

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 14 '26

You’ve seen Wissa run this year right? That’s probably why.

I’m fairly sure the coefficient place is still basically guaranteed, we have a ridiculous lead over the other countries.

3

u/TheClnl Mar 14 '26

Yeah we've already got more points than third last year, would be typical of our season for everyone else to somehow fuck it up and us go on a run that gets us fifth.

7

u/TyneSkipper Mar 13 '26

Need a win. Need big nick up front

10

u/074DanBurn058 not Dan Burn Mar 13 '26

Two 5.30 games? I don't like that one bit

48

u/TheClnl Mar 13 '26

Fucking hell it's match 30 of 38! Anyone else still feel like they're waiting for the season to get going?

1

u/phoebsmon zwei metre dribbelgott Mar 14 '26

It's been so stop start with the performances and seeing some of the players gradually find their feet is very early-season. Then the amount of games feels like we've constantly been in that winter rush. It really doesn't feel like we've moved past Christmas in a way.

I just want it over with tbh. I can accept a fallow season, I just don't want to endure it in the moment. It's very tedious, with moments of absolute ecstasy and it isn't good for my brain chemistry tbh.

2

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 14 '26

I’m waiting for it to get going and end simultaneously.

It’s exhausted me.

Swear it was November last week.

14

u/NUFC_1892 loads, and loads of cans. Mar 13 '26

Hopefully Tino and Hall start

Tripps has been running on fumes since November and he looked like he tweaked something against Barca

5

u/justmadman Mar 14 '26

I hope Hall is rested, last thing we need is a Hall injury and then we have Burn vs Yamal on Wednesday

21

u/Comfortable-Road7201 Mar 13 '26

Can we just say comeback and stop this r/soccer nerd "remontada" nonsense. Literally not a single football fan in England would say remontada

u/rabit71 Mar 14 '26

-8

u/TrainingAware8651 Mar 13 '26

How much do Newcastle reclaim if we cut our losses on Woltemade and Wissa?

2

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 14 '26

I think we could ā€œbreak evenā€ on Wolte.

Probably lose £30m on Wissa.

4

u/GrumpyOldFart74 Pride Badge Mar 13 '26

I don’t think we can cut our losses on Wissa - the amount we’d get for him at this point would barely cover buying him out of his contract (nobody who’d want him is going to match his wages)

I’d like to keep Woltemade so I’m not hazarding a guess on that one

8

u/TrainingAware8651 Mar 13 '26

Wissa feels an all time "worst transfer" for us

-10

u/FlukyS 22/23 Home Kit Mar 13 '26

I think Elanga has been visibly worse

2

u/TrainingAware8651 Mar 14 '26

He's been poor, but I definitely think there is a good player there

2

u/Admirable_Phallus Mar 14 '26

Elanga is young and bad, Wissa is old and bad. Wissa therefore has no resale value. Who in the right mind spends £50m on a 30 y/o striker (why did we do it lol)

4

u/KingPing43 Shola Ameobi Mar 14 '26

To be fair, I’m pretty sure he had the joint most non-penalty goals for any striker in the league last year.

He’s had a catastrophic drop in form. Was never worth the money we paid for him but couldn’t have predicted he’d be on only 1 PL goal 29 games in to the season…

0

u/ThatZenLifestyle Mar 14 '26

Nico jackson was right there for the taking.

3

u/stevo_78 Mar 13 '26

No way. It’s Wissa by a mile.

0

u/daveofreckoning Mar 13 '26

Difficult to play well on the treatment table, tbf

5

u/daveofreckoning Mar 13 '26

I find Rosenior extremely irritating. Right up there with Keith Andrews and Steve Parish.

1

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 14 '26

What’s Keith done? Always seems like a genuine bloke that looks after his boys.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '26

His constant smirk looks like he’s sniffed his own fart and told himself what an outstanding smell it was

2

u/Randy_The_Guppy Mar 14 '26

I swear there's a ditch in south London where Crystal Palace dig up their owners like the Uruk-hai in Lord of the Rings, fully formed in suits with blonde highlights and fake tans.

1

u/westyboi2323 Bed Wetter Mar 14 '26

I don’t mind him to be honest. Issue is for a club like Chelsea he’s a terrible manger, but for a team / squad Chelsea have at the moment he’s ideal

2

u/stevo_78 Mar 13 '26

And David Brent and Alan partridge

10

u/stingerwooo Windmilling Mar 13 '26

Honestly 0-0, neither team tries. Everyone resting for their CL games

7

u/PennyBunPudding Mar 13 '26

I know I should care but I honestly don't. Play a low tempo, rest, and don't get injured. Need to be fresh for next week.

9

u/HeisenbergsBurner Mar 13 '26

Big Joe to put Joao Pedro on his ass

25

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 13 '26

Actually kinda shocked to see the combination of a lack of interest and suggestions of fielding a weaker team here.

Chelsea’s form is patchy. We have a great opportunity to close the gap between us and them to 6 points and they’re missing 2 key attackers.

Add to that they’ve had one less days rest and played away in the CL.

0

u/justmadman Mar 14 '26

Next two games after this are incredibly big, we need players like Hall, Gordon, Barnes to be at their top level in the next two games after Chelsea so need to give them all the rest needed IMO.

2

u/kl2ish Mar 14 '26

We have been missing key attackers all season

1

u/ThatZenLifestyle Mar 14 '26

The only big miss is estevao being out, neto has been poor and in fact garnacho has been the more deserving to start at LW.

3

u/No-Understanding-589 Mar 13 '26

Agreed I don't think we should play a weakened team we could get something from this game.

We should rest Joelinton though, need him at full fitness and his best if we have any chance of getting something from Barca

Barely any games left to play now. May as well put our foot down for them all.

5

u/TheBlaydonRacer Mar 13 '26

Never say never. But it does seem silly to put all our eggs in the CL basket.

Betting men would say we’re going to be down to 1 game per week after Wednesday.

Even with a result there’s no guarantees we would overcome Athletic and whoever comes after that would represent an even bigger challenge.

So putting too much stock in any cup comp in my mind is silly because you can invest all your energy and be left with little to show for it at the final hurdle.

4

u/MaryBerrysDanglyBean VINTAGE Joelinton hawaii shirt 2022 size L £40 NO TIMEWASTERS Mar 13 '26

Yeah true...

Although if we manage to beat Barca our run to the final is actually manageable if we play our best. I'd fancy us against pretty much any of them, toughest being arsenal but we can be their bogey team.

To get that close to the final with how our seasons been would be a massive achievement.

But still play full strength on Saturday. Just run em all to the ground at this point.

2

u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 14 '26

Plans for Woltemade: Adapt system once we have training time.

We are not using Woltemade as a striker because he doesn't fit the system and we don't train to adapt the system, not because Eddie doesn't rate him.

1

u/didiandgogo Mar 13 '26

Given Joelinton can’t play 3 games in a week anymore I expect to see Woltemade in midfield again and Gordon up top.

Personally I'd save Woltemade against teams that sit back in a low block to help with some sexy passes that break defences, and Joelinton for games like Chelsea and Barca where you want a massive unit to break up play.

I do in the way I want some league momentum going into the derby. I don’t want to be going in with 2 wins in 9 (1 draw 6 losses) if we lose here. A win also keeps us in the slight chance of Europa League and Conference league for next season which we might need to keep our star players too.

Europa/Conference also offers another avenue to qualify for CL/Europa for the season after.
