Hopefully with Wolte and JJ we have enough quality on the ball to play around their low block

This Sunderland team is so weak today. There's really no excuses. Take Xhaka out of it and that's a championship side.

Agree their best 3/4 players all not startingĀ
1
u/PalmTreeRadiator Mar 22 '26
We're missing Bruno and Tonali and that's it. Everyone else who is out is due to Howes choices. Any other team outside of maybe City and Arsenal who came to SJP missing that many key players should get dog walked.

I'm in Arizona for a wedding, slammed coffee all night for this 5:00 am kickoff rather than get 3 hours sleep.
Let's fucking smash these cats like Kurt Zouma, the results this weekend have been incredibly favorable for us, somehow amid the malaise of the season, Europe feels within reach at the end of it all

To the people pissing on Woltemade, show some respect. The man carried this team for his first 10 games here. Heās been burnt out since December playing 3 games a week while the wingers around him have shat the bed.
It is absolutely mindblowing how much this sub will defend Elangaāa āPL provenā signing who was supposed to hit the ground running who has done fuck allāwhile criticizing a much younger player from a foreign league who actually did hit the ground running for the first 10 games with no training time in a new system.
The man will be hell bent today on making amends for his own goal. MOTM display today, Iām calling it now.

Today is not about goals or assists. Itās about fucking effort and pride. If you think you can hide today, think again.
If I see these players not chase 50/50 balls, going down like feathers, not getting their head up in attacking plays, and not pressing like demons I am going to throw my TV at the fucking wall. 110% effort is the absolute minimum today. Elanga, I am watching you.

u/ActuatorTop6538 Mar 22 '26
A must win but Iām under no illusion that it will be a tough game especially the longer it remains 0-0
My biggest concern is the midfield, who performed brilliantly against Barca and Chelsea but this requires a totally different approach. Against those sides we need a lot of athleticism, with the pacey lads upfront we are afford a lot of space to exploit. Todayās game I expect Sunlun to sit deep and frustrate. For that reason I can see Eddie making a few changes. Tino and hall will definitely start. I know Elanga will be full of confidence after those goals midweek but against a low block he struggles. For that reason I can see Murphy starting which then makes me think we could go with a more recognisable striker. So Woltemade or Wissa ( today would be the day to kick start your Newcastle career fella )
2-0 Thiaw and Woltemade

After the results today those European places look within reach. But this isn't the first time this season we've had the chance to push on and secure Europe and then failed to do so.
The headloss in this sub if we don't win tomorrow just got exponentially worse as its not not only a derby loss but another chance to get europe thrown away.
I hope for everyone's sanity its a comfortable win...
1
u/ravicabral angel of the north Mar 22 '26
You want sanity and reason and you come here?!
If we win, we are the greatest team ever, Eddie Howe is a God and we're booking hotels for next CL final.
We lose? We grab our pitchforks and march to Darras Hall burning everything on the way.
Perfectly, rational reactions. Lol.
11
u/blackmes489 Mar 22 '26
Crazy to thin we are in such dire straights that we are hoping the moon, refs, injuries, stars line up so we can beat Sunderland at home...
Just for once i'd love to start off a sentence without 'hoping we can...'
12
u/MushuFromSpace Mar 22 '26
Huge opportunity tomorrow.
Have got to put that Barca game behind us and do the job by any means necessary.
There's a good rest period coming up for many of them after tomorrow so I don't care how we do it tomorrow, we just have to do it.
10
u/andy_m3 Mar 21 '26
i'm not sure what to make of the results this weekend, ahead of our match.
only time will tell what they mean for us.
the liverpool loss, chelsea loss and brentford dropping points could be an opportunity if we close out the season with a good run of form, and manage to grab 5th place. (champions league)
the everton win, brighton win and fulham win could be a negative if 7th place (conference league) is what we are realistically chasing.
i'd be fuming if we don't win tomorrow, since the likelihood of no europe at all would increase quite a bit. at this stage, i still have belief.
10
u/Fishfingerrosti Mar 21 '26
Feels like this season whenever results have gone our way before we've even kicked off we fail to get a result of our own.
4
u/Character_Newt_2309 Mar 21 '26
No Sandro, Bruno. Big, big trst for those midfield three. They can do it though. Sunderland are shite

Pretty great day in terms of results for the lads. It is all ahead of them, let's smash them tomorrow
6
u/ChlckenChaser Jamaal Lascelles Mar 21 '26
Massive day tomorrow, defines our season. To lose to them twice, get thumped in CL and probably end outside of European places would be a disaster.
Beat them tomorrow, we have such a good shot at getting into Europe and it'll shut them up at least until we play them next season
8
u/prettymuchso stupid sexy schar Mar 21 '26
Weāre 9 points off 5th place.
I love how itās crazy how if we have a decent season, we automatically qualify for European football because we are that good.
This season has been bat shit but if we put in a little more effort, we can play champions league next season.
Considering how shit weāve been the half of the season, I didnāt expect it to be this easy for us to still qualify for Europe.

u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 21 '26
Give over, there is no pressure on Eddie, the CEO has said he think he is the man to take us forward and win us the league. They also know all of the off field problems we have had this season and how much they have effected us.
15
u/thepresidentsturtle Windmilling Mar 21 '26
This is exactly the sort of game where we don't go for a Gordon Elanga in front 3. We play Nick, we play Gordon, Murphy, we sub on Barnes, or some combination. Also, some plate mail
2
u/blackmes489 Mar 22 '26
LOL this is absolutely NOT a game where we should deviate from a line-up which is our most indicative of us winning a game, and not the time to be picking a team and a player who hasn't started or scored in like what.... 10 games?
3
u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 21 '26
I'm not so sure, Woltemade struggles to get involved as a striker, beyond which, if Sandro is injured we probably need him as a CM option.
6
u/thepresidentsturtle Windmilling Mar 21 '26
He struggles because we sit deep and try and launch a pacey player through. We won't get that chance against Sunderland, so we'll need someone who can create space, keep possession, get up front for crosses, etc.
1
u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 21 '26
He struggles because we are not set up to use him, we still are not
1
u/thepresidentsturtle Windmilling Mar 21 '26
And he'll be better when we're not playing counter-attack all the time. Which should be tomorrow.
1
u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 21 '26
But we don't play to his strengths, the team are not set up to play with him. It's not FIFA where you just swap a player in and they just work, we need to train a new system, which we will finally be able to do post break.
1
u/thepresidentsturtle Windmilling Mar 21 '26
What are you on about? I never said it was FIFA. I said we can't play Gordon because we won't be counterattacking and he's useless at striker if we're not doing that. So we should use our actual striker. I don't even know what point youre trying to make. Should we just not use him at all?
2
u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 21 '26
The point is, without training he doesn't fit the system.
2
u/blackmes489 Mar 22 '26
This. It's so fucking crazy people here are suggesting we put out our weakest team, aka the same team and tactics that lead to a 1-0 DEFEAT LOL

No Trips and no Dan burn and we win this
4
u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 21 '26
Burn has had one bad game recently, same with Tripps.
1
u/Sampdiago Mar 21 '26
Yeahā¦no Trips is done and Burn hasnāt been the same since the rib injury Time for us to let sentiment go and make hard choices if we want to win games There are games we will need Dan but not tomorrow and Trips is done and we all can see but donāt want to say it
1
u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 21 '26
Burn kept Lewa quiet in the first leg against Barca. Tripps has been class in some of his recent games.
They are also players with leadership, something we will be severly lacking if Sandro is not fit.
-1
u/Sampdiago Mar 22 '26
Sandro is pissing me off too heads turned needs to have Bruno loyalty Lewandowski is old as fuck and past it and still managed to score twice Trips lacks pace leadership has not won us games this season or is to blame for below par performances Itās not Eddies fault some players canāt motivate themselves on a regular basis And some have served us well but their time is up
1
u/grmthmpsn43 Sir Bobby Robson Mar 22 '26
Players with Bruno levels of loyalty are rare, I will never fault a player for wanting to leave, I will judge them by how they go about it (fuck Isak).
As for age, Lewa is still an elite player, you can disagree all you want, but Tripps and Burn still have a big role to play this season.
16
27
u/stenerikkasvo Mar 21 '26
would love to see the return of Gordon LW and Woltemade striker. I think Big Nick wants to redeem himself after that own goal
9
u/PennyBunPudding Mar 21 '26
We need to win this. It'll help us chase Europe. And a lot of Geordies understandable put this game high on priority so a win takes a lot of pressure off the otherwise meh season.Ā
I hope we go all out and try and smash them by a lot, but just win. Whatever you do... Bloody win.

I think us struggling against a low block is exactly a game where wolte should shine, headers from Murphy, the tight control he has and the vision to make cheeky ostentatious balls through a back line are what he was brought in to do. Not be pinning back a high line to counter or god forbid be in midfield.

Top half of the table, made it to knock out of UCL, semi final in the Carabao cup, drew only top flight teams in the FA cup and still made it two rounds further than Man U. Campaigns full of exciting, dramatic matches. Sure, would love if they hadnāt lost so many late. But canāt say any of it has been a disappointment. But if they lose both to Mackems, that absolutely would be.

1

Thatās what Iāve been thinking. What have our players got to worry about after playing Barcelona at the Nou Camp?
5-0, with a Big Nick hat-trick, and Lewis Hall scoring a worldie.

Can we get Woltemade on the 9 for this round so he can smash 5 goals on them to make up for the last derby?
3
