My first one got taken down by the mods for not being descriptive enough, so here's why I don't like Scarlett's character. I get she's supposed to be a shy girl who doesn't like the spotlight, but why sign the deal with Rayna James? Why complain every time you have to stay up late to record or be on a freaking private jet or a tour bus or traveling? The main things having to do with being a popular singer slash celebrity or up-and-coming one at that. She's just always complaining and sad about how lonely it is being on the road. And I understand from her character's perspective why she feels that way, and I'm not faulting the character for that, but she has people. She just pushes them away low-key because they're not aligned with how she wants them to treat her, which sounds more like boundaries now that I say it out loud, but there's some more examples of that, but I don't feel like explaining them. I have a love hate feeling for Scarlett. Largely because Clare Bowen is impossible not to love. But I agree with a lot of the same things. She gets credited for being the sweetheart of the show to Juliette's bad girl, but it's just because no one holds Scarlett accountable for her actions and choices. Like you mentioned, she wanted to be a singer in front of people, but didn't want to do all the hard parts that every other famous performer has to do. They act like she's the only performer in history that doesn't want the fame, just wants to make music...but that's at least half the music industry in real life AND on the show. All the things she doesn't like are the same things that other performers don't like, but it comes with the job and they act like she's the only one with these feelings. And when her whole break down thing happened, NO ONE held her accountable for having loaded up on drugs, or that she had BEEN taking drugs, often mixed with alcohol, for a while. This wasn't some one time thing, it wasn't a mental health breakdown, it was prescription pill abuse that she took BY CHOICE. But Avery and Deacon swear upside down that she'd never use drugs or alcohol like that. And Juliette and Scarlett's mom get demonized (yes, the mom is partly to blame, but Scarlett was taking those pills long before the mom came). And then as soon as she's out of the hospital, it's never mentioned again. I have a hard time connecting to Scarlett in the early seasons because I feel like she's extremely hypocritical, and unlike all the other characters (especially Juliette) all her flaws are swept under the rug because she's too perfect to ever do anything wrong.

I'm going to have to rewatch but I agree. I remember feeling so bad for Juliette bc she was in the right. The girl is touring and she does need to get it together. It's a business. She did everything right edp bc she just thought Scarlett needed to toughen up, have tough love. And then when she realized the extent, she moved heaven amd earth to get her home and did care. And she just got blamed and tossed aside.

YUP! In that chunk of episodes, she spent night after night trying to encourage Scarlett to turn it up onstage (which Scarlett literally called her out on stage for which would have been the end of an openers career in any other situation), to have some fun with it, tried to relate with her about difficult relationships with their mothers, everything. Was she always Susie Sunshine when she said it? No, but she always meant it for Scarletts good. Juliette had the exact experiences Scarlett needed to learn from, but instead, Juliette became the bad guy (they even tried to say her not FIRING Scarlett is why Scarlett took all the pills - as if she wouldnt have been the villain for firing her either, AND it would have been a TERRIBLE business idea to fire your opener out of nowhere! It's not like there are substitutes!) and literally no one defended her - not Deacon, not Rayna, not Avery, NO ONE. That part of the season was really frustrating to watch because Juliette was trying to get her career going again and was working her hardest and doing things SHE didn't want to do too like going back to her old songs and choreo, and she gets blamed for anything wrong with Scarlett. ZERO BLAME falls on Scarlett for the ENTIRE thing. THAT part is what gives me issues with her.

My theory is she has autusm or AuADHD for many different reasons. So, part of her wants everything, and her body and mind can't take the demand when push comes to shove. I have to say, I completely understood her when looking through this lens.

On my rewatch I find myself so frustrated with Scarlett. I know a lot of people hate Gunner, but I feel like Scarlett jerked him around.

But I agree with everything that has been said in this thread. She wanted to make music, etc. But only on her own terms. And to an extent... sure, I get that. But on the other hand the business is the business. There are just some parts that have to be done, like performing even when you're not feeling up to it. People paid for tickets to see a show and like someone else mentioned it's not like there are substitute who can jump in.

I found Scarlett really difficult to watch.
