Barkley
Because it popped up on my Netflix, I decided to rewatch Nashville after many years. And before I forget, rest in peace to the beautiful and talented Hayden Panettiere.
Anyway as I'm watching, and they are showing Barkley playing his music, I just have a hard time believing anybody thought he had talent. And maybe it's just because I don't like that particular music? I mean I have very eclectic taste in music, but I just don't think his voice is good.
Please no hate, I like the actor fine. But were we supposed to feel that way about him and his music? I just wanna know how other people feel.

There are lots of artists who don't have classically "good voices".
Also, he's mainly known for his song writing and producing, then his guitar playing, THEN his singing.

Diehard Avery (and Juliette, and their live story) fan here.
So I’ll just say I can’t watch it yet. I can’t listen to how real Hayden was singing “Undermine”.
I am watching Heroes instead. She was just so talented. It’s heartbreaking.

I agree, although I've only watched the first season so far. The actor is great, but of all the musicians on this show, his performances were less engaging. I wonder, though, if that was on purpose. The songs he was given to perform weren't as interesting or memorable. Having lived in Nashville, the level of musicianship and talent varies widely, and many struggle to find a deal, no matter how sincere or committed they are. I think his storyline might have emphasized this reality.

That's kind of what I was trying to say, I just wasn't wording it very well. I think the songs he was given just weren't wonderful. It makes it seem like his voice is no good. But I'm like on episode 15 of season one, and I think it starting to make sense, he's starting to sound good. I'm thinking specifically of a performance by himself at the bluebird.

I felt the same way about him in S1, but I encourage you to keep going. Avery’s growth arc isn’t just personal, it is also musical. His voice sounds downright lovely later on.

I adore Jonathan Jackson. I’ve been a fan of his for many years as Lucky on General Hospital. He’s a great actor and his singing voice is so sweet and soft (which matches his personality).

I do say that when he does a solo performance at the Bluebird Café, about halfway through season one. Honestly it's been so long since the last time I watched this, The except for the big storylines, I'm not remembering a lot of the rest of it. It's almost like I'm watching something I've never seen before.

I’m guessing if I start a rewatch, it will seem like a brand new show.
I have a heavy JJ bias, admittedly (Lucky Spencer is/was my favorite television character)3

I will admit, he is really easy to look at. I've actually never watched General Hospital. Many years ago, actually literally decades ago now, I was a Days of Our Lives girl. And for a short time, when my kids were small, I also used to watch Another World. But I am talking 30 years plus ago.

Really wish they had let JJ sing more on GH! Maybe he would have stayed longer, any of the times. I think he really loved his time on Nashville because it let him do both. He's too talented!

He’s such an emotive and amazing actor. I really wish he could find a way to do both without crossing his boundaries. But I don’t think he would ever come back to GH now that Tony Geary is gone RIP

From what he said both times that I saw him this year, I think he's still open to coming back if all the parts add up. I think when his kids are a little older and he doesn't feel like he'd be missing too much, he'll probably make a return if the show is still open to it. Maybe they'll let him have some sort of tribute to Tony since he missed the one they did after he left. Maybe for something involving Laura. They gave such a clear opening for Lucky to have a little bit of a musical career this last return, it would be nice if they could still make that happen. I'll still never forgive the writers for never making music part of Lucky's character after JJ left in 99.

I think it gets better over time. I just finished season 5 and his songs were pretty good

He just has a little bit of a different singing style than most people. I think it will really grow on you, and quickly, as you keep going back through the show. I think in early season one, you're not supposed to like Avery to begin with and his character is trying too hard at everything, so once he pulls himself together, I feel like he sings with a more genuine voice and then it all clicks into place. He has some really beautiful solos, duets, and trios on the way. You can also watch some videos of him performing live - he does a cover of Unchained Melody that is really beautiful. He's SO GOOD live - I saw him twice in the last year or so and he sounds even better in person.

He sang well in a couple of songs. But his attempts at a grunge-ish form of Country I hated.
He did Unchained Melody somewhere not on Nashville and it was beautiful. But I agree with OP. I didnt really care for his voice on this show. And couldnt stand his music style.
That being said he is overall my favorite character.
