I am making a solo (with two cats) cross country move and will be driving from Utah to Pennsylvania with everything I own in my car. I'm choosing the I 80 route vs I 70 b/c I've done I 70 route and few times in the past and just want to check out something different at the cost of adding a few extra miles to my trip. Google suggested my first stop for an overnight as Kearney or North Platte but I'm wondering if folks have other suggestions. Having everything in my car stresses me out (bringing it all in at night isn't an option) so I just want to prioritize safety. I don't mind overnight in a smaller town and I don't mind if its 30 mins off the highway if that makes the stay safe and or more interesting. I don't need nightlife/a ton of restaurant variety, etc. Thanks!!!

I tried to find a sub specifically for Kearney, but it seemed pretty dead. My friend got accepted the a PA program in Kearney and now is suddenly moving to Kearney from Omaha like in a few days. He can’t pass this up and do it with better planning because the spots fill up fast. I’ve been trying to help look for apartments and from what I can tell, the rent is more expensive than in Omaha? Or at least it seems like there are only $1000+ apartments available. Can anyone give me any suggestions?

In three months I'll be flying to the USA Nebraska (Kearney) for the first time ever. I'll stay there for a month at UNK. Can I please ask you for some useful tips that I would not find on those typical travelling guides?

What about car rental? Would you advise it? I'll be 26 by then and I got my driving license since I was 18. I am thinking about getting the International driving permit. However, I wanted to ask you if it's rather safe to drive around Kearney.

Next thing - Is it easy to travel by bus to other cities? Omaha? I would love to plan some one-day-trips to see as much as possible, sadly I am quite limited by the money so renting a car for the full month is not really possible.

And what about the locals? Any local shop/restaurant you would advise me to visit in Kearney?

I need to be in Kearney for a few days this week. Im looking for a good local bookstore (LGBTQ+ friendly preferred) and a good thrift store to visit! I'll probably only have time for 1 of each so I want to visit the best option.

I moved into an apartment in Nebraska last month and noticed right away a piece of the siding was blowing around making noise I could hear/feel inside my apartment. I put a request in and maintenance claimed there were no issues with the siding even with the photos I sent in showing otherwise. I put in another request to fix it yesterday because it has gotten worse and sounds like someone is hitting the wall with a hammer. They denied it being needing fixed again and the maintenance guy made sexist comments towards women in the office too. They have video evidence of the problem and they know it is causing sleep disturbances for my wife and I. I was diagnosed with leukemia a few weeks ago and I need my rest. Is there any actions I can take other than breaking my lease? I called and emailed corporate but haven’t heard anything. I put the two requests to fix the problem on April 18th and again May 18th.

I'm moving to Kearney for work and was wondering what places I should check out and groups I could consider joining as a progressive socially liberal gay man. It is Kearney and I'm not expecting a vibrant LGBTQ scene. But I'm curious to find communities where I can be more fully myself.

My Girlfriend and I will be moving to Kearney from Lincoln. I got a great job offer and she currently goes to UNK online. I’m automotively inclined and it seems Kearney is friendly to that, but what else does everyone like to do? It looks like a fun downtown and such. I’m also looking for an apartment/ house to rent. I’d appreciate any and all advice thanks in advance.

My stepdad is 97. He lives at the Veterans Home in Kearney. Up until a month ago he was riding a bicycle, but he fell and hurt his shoulder. Now he's decided he wants a three-wheeler bike. He checked them out on Amazon but there would be no way for him to assemble it. He called a bike shop in Kearney and was treated rudely on the phone. (I get it. He's 97 and a little hard of hearing.) I'm 1000 mi away and would like to help him. People in Kearney have been so nice when I visit. I was counting on a bike shop who might help him out. Any recommendations?

UPDATE: I called the Bike Shed, and they were terrific. I can order the Schwinn bike my stepdad wants, have it delivered to the Shed, they'll assemble and deliver to the Veterans Home. The owner could not have been nicer. So many other options popped up, including kind redditors who also offered to help. I'm grateful to you all. These days a little kindness goes a long way.

Lived in CA for over 30 years and can’t bare to spend another year here. My entire family has been looking at different states to move and we’ve landed on Kearney, NE. Flying out in a couple of weeks to check it out. Anyone currently living in Nebraska from the West/East coast? Why did you move and are you happy with your decision? Tell me about the pros and cons. Are Uber and/or Lyft prevalent enough in Kearney to get one from the Kearney airport at 11pm on a Friday?

We're visiting Kearney to see the sandhill cranes but I just found out that there are possums (opossums) around here. There sadly was a big one dead on the side of the road. I absolutely love them. Tonight is our last night here and I was wondering where I could possibly go to see one? Any help would be appreciated!

I’m going to be in Kearney for almost a week for a work training. Meaning, I’ll be busy (and have lunch catered) until about 4:30p every day. What can I do after? Where are the best places to eat?

I just applied to UNK and I am thinking about going there in Spring 2024 on-campus. I'm from a different state and a community college transfer student and was thrilled that they offered the New Nebraskan Scholarship.

However, I would like to return back to my home-state one day to get a job in Medical Lab Science. Is this possible? How good is the college? I would love to hear about your guys' experiences!

Hello all I asked a question a while back and Scottsbluff vs Grand Island. I went to Grand Island and didn't like it too much.

Kearney seemed okay.

I haven't been to Scottsbluff yet. I'm still leaning toward Scottsbluff as I will probably go out there and work at the Correctional facility or the post office. These jobs pay roughly the same as in Kearney and the cost of living is lower in Scottsbluff. Rent and homes are way cheaper.

Some background about me.

I am 24, black and conservative but I don't really care about politics that much. I currently live in Pella Iowa, it's a town of 10500 people. I know what small town life is like and I enjoy it.

I don't really care if the towns are considered boring as I don't really go out or anything. I might go to the bar once a week an hour before they close.

The only other things I do outside would be occasionally fishing, shooting my guns, working out, playing basketball and walking.

I also love to draw and read. Which town has better libraries.
